COALITION OF THE WILLING CALLS FOR MORE PRESSURE ON RUSSIA

A group of countries supporting Ukraine has agreed to increase pressure on Moscow through measures including sanctions on Russian oil companies.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted the Coalition of the Willing Leaders meeting in London on Friday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte attended.
Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae joined the talks online. Takaichi called Russia's invasion of Ukraine a reckless action that shakes the foundations of the international order. She said Japan's stance of solidarity with Ukraine remains unchanged. She said Japan will keep working closely with the international community in supporting Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia to realize an immediate ceasefire and lasting peace.
At a news conference after the talks, Starmer laid out the position of coalition leaders toward Russian President Vladimir Putin.

We are determined to act now, to dial up the pressure on Putin, and finally bring him to the negotiating table.

He said the participants agreed to act to take Russian oil and gas off the global market and push ahead with progress on Russia's frozen assets. Zelenskyy said possessing long-range strike capability directly strengthens diplomacy. He reiterated the need for weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, that can carry out such attacks. He said that the more losses Putin suffers on his own territory, the fewer assaults he can carry out on the front line. He said the losses would make Putin agree faster to meaningful diplomacy.
Zelenskyy also expressed gratitude to Takeichi for joining the coalition talks for the first time as Japan's new prime minister. Her participation was also welcomed by Starmer.
He said the fact that she chose the forum as her first international contribution and was so clear and powerful, in her words, emphasized the importance of the coalition. The Ukraine meeting kicked off a week of summit diplomacy for Japan's new prime minister.

Steady contributions to the peace and prosperity of this region will also protect Japan's national interests. This is my second foreign diplomatic engagement, following my remote participation in the meeting held in London last night.
I'll work hard to ensure that Japan's diplomacy blooms at the center of the world.

After arriving in Kuala Lumpur, Takaichi will meet leaders of an association of Southeast Asian nations. She plans to confirm cooperation with ASEAN in a wide range of fields.
The Prime Minister is also expected to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific as a pillar of her foreign policy. Takaichi is expected to call for deeper cooperation in advanced technologies, such as AI, and to bolster supply chains.
And she is scheduled to attend a Japan-led international conference on carbon neutrality and economic growth in Kuala Lumpur.
Arrangements are also being made for her to hold a series of bilateral summits, including with Malaysian Prime Minister and current ASEAN Chair Anwar Ibrahim.

TRUMP HEADS TO ASIA FOR TALKS WITH LEADERS

US President Donald Trump is heading to Asia for the first time in his second term.
He is slated to meet with Takaichi as well as Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trump will first join leaders at the ASEAN summit in Malaysia on Sunday.
He'll then make a three-day visit to Japan for scheduled talks with Takechi on Tuesday.
Next up is South Korea for a meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC.
He'll meet with South Korean President Lee Jae-myong and hold talks with Xi.
A national security expert says the trip shows that the U.S. is still strongly committed to the Indo-Pacific.

President Trump in his first term, I think, demonstrated conclusively that the United States will remain the security guarantor for our friends and our allies in the region.
And I think the president's going to leave the region having reinforced that message.

I think the president is very attuned to the fact that China continues to be the preeminent national security threat to the United States.

He added that the meeting with Takaichi will be an opportunity for the two to build up a close bond like the one Trump shared with late Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.

US DEPLOYING AIRCRAFT CARRIER TO LATIN AMERICA

The Trump administration has announced it's deploying the world's largest aircraft carrier to waters off Latin America as part of efforts against drug smuggling.
U.S. media say the measure is another step in Trump's escalating pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
The chief Pentagon spokesperson says the USS Gerald R. Ford and its strike group will be sent to the US Southern Command's area of responsibility.
The area covers Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. The vessel is equipped with F/A-18 fighter jets, among other aircraft. It is currently operating in waters off Europe. US media called the dispatch of the carrier highly unusual.
American amphibious assault ships and marines have already been deployed in the area.
The Trump administration claims that large amounts of drugs are being smuggled into the U.S. from Venezuela, Colombia, and other South American countries. It says U.S. strikes on alleged drug trafficking boats have killed about 40 people since September.
