WAR IN UKRAINE
US PAPER: PUTIN WANTS DONETSK AS CONDITION FOR CEASEFIRE

The Washington Post is reporting that Russian President Vladimir Putin has set a new condition for ending the war in Ukraine.
He wants Kyiv to surrender the entire Donetsk region.
The U.S. daily says Putin conveyed the demand to U.S. President Donald Trump in a phone call on Thursday.
Donetsk lies in eastern Ukraine and has been a key battleground since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
According to the report, Putin also told Trump that he would, in exchange, surrender parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, areas in the country's south that Russia claims to have taken control of.
The Washington Post quoted senior officials as saying that Putin's position is not softening, despite Trump's optimism about securing a deal.
Leaders in Kyiv insist they will not cede any territory to Russia.
Trump and Putin have agreed to meet in Hungary in the coming weeks to discuss Ukraine.

CNN: US GOVT. OFFICIALS DISCUSS POSSIBLE TRUMP-KIM SUMMIT
00:01:24 話者 1
CNN reports that White House officials have privately discussed setting up a meeting between U.S. President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The report says the officials are considering the meeting during Trump's Asian tour scheduled for late this month.
He's set to visit Japan and South Korea.
The U.S. TV network quotes sources as saying that many officials are skeptical that the summit with Kim will ultimately happen.
They reportedly say that unlike during Trump's first term, there have not been any communications between Washington and Pyongyang.
Back in August, Trump was hosting South Korean President Lee Jae-myung at the White House when he was asked by reporters about the possibility of meeting with Kim.
Trump said he would like to meet Kim this year, but didn't give a specific date.

A senior United Nations official has expressed high hopes that Japan will play a major role in rebuilding the war-torn Gaza Strip.
The UN has estimated that nearly 80 percent of all structures in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged.
The destruction has created more than 61 million tons of debris that's hindering restoration efforts.
Administrator Yakko Seeliers, special representative of the UN Development Program, visited Gaza on Saturday.
He predicted that the removal work will take more than five years.

Japan has a lot of experience from tsunamis and earthquakes on how to recycle rubble.
They also help significantly with the technical insights.

00:03:09 話者 1
Japan has provided around six million dollars for the UNDP to help clear the debris.
This includes a processing facility operating at Dil Al Bala in central Gaza.
The rubble that has been brought in is crushed by machine into small pieces that are recycled for use in road construction and other purposes.

TAIWAN'S LARGEST OPPOSITION PARTY PICKS NEW LEADER
00:03:32 話者 1
Taiwan's largest opposition party has chosen Zhang Li-wen as its leader.
The Kuomintan's new chief emphasized her pro-China stance during the campaign.

00:03:45 話者 3
We will definitely bring about a transition of power during my term, and we will fulfill the most crucial mission, which is to ensure cross-strait peace and prosperity.

Zhang won about 50 percent of the votes in the leadership race on Saturday.
The 55-year-old was the only woman among the six candidates.
Zhang once belonged to the Democratic Progressive Party, but she later joined the KMT.
She has served as a lawmaker and a Cabinet spokesperson.
Zhang stressed during her campaign that she supports close relations between China and Taiwan.
She vowed to defeat the DPP by uniting the opposition forces.
The DPP does not favor strong ties with China.
The party has held the reins of power in Taiwan since 2016.
But the KMT is currently the largest force in parliament.
Zhang will serve as her party's chief for the next four years.
She will face the challenge of trying to further strengthen the KMT in the lead-up to Taiwan's next presidential election.
That contest is scheduled to be held in 2028.

BEAR ATTACKS CONTINUE IN JAPAN

Two bear attacks occurred in the same Japanese town on Saturday amid a rising number of incidents involving the animals.
A resident of the town of Minakami Gunma prefecture, north of Tokyo, alerted police around 4 p.m. Saturday that a woman had been attacked while walking a dog.
The police say the 76-year-old woman was mauled on the ear and buttocks by what's believed to be an adult bear.
They say her injuries were serious.
Earlier at 1:30 p.m. in a forest about eight kilometers away from the first attack, a 64-year-old man was attacked by a bear.
He sustained a fractured facial bone and scratches.
The police also say this is not the first time a bear attack has occurred in the area.
Last Monday, a bear attacked and injured an elderly couple who were taking a walk.
Another woman in her 70s was injured by a bear while doing yard work.
On Sunday in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan, a 40-year-old man was attacked by a bear, also while walking.

PACIFIC SAURY FESTIVAL HELD IN KESENNUMA
00:06:21 話者 1
People in the northeastern Japanese city of Kisenema were able to enjoy free-grilled Pacific sori on Saturday.
The location was a tourist facility near this fishing port in Miyagi Prefecture, where a festival was held for the first time in six years.
The facility was destroyed by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, but was rebuilt in 2014.
And then festival events had to be canceled for five years from 2020 until 2024 because of the coronavirus pandemic and poor fish catches.
But Saturday's event took place amid large sori catches in waters around the country.
1,000 freshly caught sori, each weighing in at about 150 grams, were grilled and handed out free of charge.

I wasn't able to eat much saori last year. It's delicious.

Visitors paid 1,000 yen, or about 6 dollars 50 cents, to take home as many saori as they could grab with both hands from a tank filled with ice.
Some of them scooped up more than 20.
