North Korea has announced that it failed launching what it calls a rocket. Pyongyang says an accident occurred while it was aiming to put a new satellite into orbit.

North Korea says the rocket took off on Wednesday morning from a launching station in the country's northwest. But it suffered a malfunction and crashed into the Yellow Sea.

South Korea's military says it has been able to locate where it went down about 200 kilometers west of the island of Eocheong.

It released photos of what are believed to be debris recovered from the crash site.

Lee Kwang-sub from South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said, "Our military is fully on alert for any further provocations by North Korea such as another launch of the space launch vehicle."

On Monday, North Korea warned Japan it would launch a military reconnaissance satellite sometime over the next week and a half. And it now says it will carry out a second launch as soon as possible. An expert is certain about the next attempt.

Koda Yoji, former vice admiral of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, said, "I am not sure how soon the next launch will be. Generally speaking, I would expect to take a considerable amount of time to prepare. But I would say they will launch again for sure."

The Japanese government believes the launch was a test of ballistic missile technology, regardless of the North's terminology.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu said, "Such ballistic missile launches violate Security Council resolutions. Japan has lodged a strong protest and has strongly condemned Pyongyang."

Experts say the North's possession of a military satellite will allow Pyongyang to detect the movements of US aircraft carriers in real time.

Isozaki Atsuhito, professor from Keio University, said, "Rather than simply extending the range of missiles, North Korea has a mid to long-term intention to possess a variety of weapons and improve military forces and deterrence."

Japan's Defense Ministry is also maintaining its readiness for another possible launch. Land-based interceptor systems will remain deployed in Okinawa Prefecture and prepared to shoot down any missile threatening Japanese territory.

China's Foreign Minister Qin Gang has told Tesla CEO Elon Musk that his country will improve the business environment for foreign companies.

The two met in Beijing on Tuesday. China's Foreign Ministry says Qin stressed that China is committed to promoting a policy of opening-up and creating a better business environment for investors including Tesla.

Qin said a healthy, stable and constructive bilateral relationship will be beneficial for China, the United States and the world.

Musk reportedly said the interests of both countries are inseparable. He expressed his opposition to a decoupling of the US and China economies, while stating his intention to expand his business in China.

Tesla continues to place importance on the Chinese market. It launched the production of electric vehicles in Shanghai in 2019. The firm announced in April that it will build a new factory in the Chinese city to produce large-scale energy-storage batteries.

Japan's Self-Defense Forces are on alert as North Korea appears poised to fire a ballistic missile in what it calls a "satellite" launch.

The Japanese government says North Korea has notified it that the launch is planned for a period between this Wednesday and June 11.

Destroyers equipped with the Aegis missile-tracking system, which has advanced radar and interceptor missiles, are on standby around the clock in the East China Sea.

Land-based PAC-3 interceptor systems have been deployed in Naha City, on the islands of Miyako, Ishigaki and Yonaguni in Okinawa Prefecture, and on the premises of the Defense Ministry in Tokyo.

The Ground Self-Defense Force has sent units to Okinawa that are tasked with removing hazardous materials and rescuing injured people in the event of a ballistic missile falling in the area.

When Pyongyang launched what were believed to be ballistic missiles in 2012 and 2016 following notifications of satellite launches, the SDF deployed PAC-3 systems at similar locations but did not fire any interceptor missiles.

A high-ranking official of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party says the country's first military reconnaissance satellite will be launched in June.

Ri Pyong Chol, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party, issued a statement through the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Tuesday.

Ri criticized the United States and South Korea for holding major live-fire drills since last Thursday, and said the countries raised military tensions in the Korean Peninsula and its surrounding areas.

He said North Korea's planned satellite launch is indispensable for real-time tracking and monitoring of "the dangerous military acts of the US and its vassal forces" and to strengthen the military preparedness of his country's armed forces.

He added that "various reconnaissance means" are due to be newly tested, without giving further details.

The statement was released one day after Pyongyang notified Japan of its plan to launch what it calls an "artificial satellite" sometime between May 31 and June 11.

North Korea last launched what is believed to be a long-range ballistic missile under the pretext of putting a satellite into orbit in February 2016.

If Pyongyang does so again, it would violate UN Security Council resolutions that ban the country from conducting any launches using ballistic missile technology.

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has announced his eldest son, Shotaro, who serves as his secretary, will be replaced to take responsibility for holding a party at the prime minister's official residence last year.

Kishida told reporters on Monday that Kishida Shotaro will resign on June 1. He will be replaced by Yamamoto Takayoshi, who previously held the post until last October.

Shotaro had received a stern warning from his father after facing criticism for holding a party in the prime minister's official residence.

A weekly magazine reported last week that he had held a year-end party with relatives last December. The participants took photos in a room typically used to receive foreign dignitaries. They also held a mock news conference there.

Kishida explained that his son's behavior at the official residence was inappropriate, adding that Shotaro was also a public figure as his secretary.

The prime minister also said he made the announcement after most of the coordination work concerning the Group of Seven summit held earlier this month was complete.

Kishida said he takes the case seriously as he was responsible for appointing his son to the post.

Opposition parties have been demanding Kishida sack his son.

Ohsaka Seiji, the executive deputy president of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party, told NHK it was wrong for the prime minister to appoint his son, as he was not qualified for the post in the first place.

Ohsaka said Kishida should have dismissed his son in January, when Shotaro was found to have gone shopping and visited tourist spots using an official vehicle when he accompanied his father's tour of Europe and the US.

Japan's biggest conveyer belt sushi chain is aiming to capitalize on increasingly cost-conscious diners. Sushiro plans to expand its menu of low-priced dishes as inflation sends more customers bargain hunting.

The restaurant chain will add 6 new dishes priced at 120 yen, or about 85 cents.

Some dishes will also have flexible prices that change based on wholesale costs. The chain may even add dishes below 85 cents.

Nii Kohei, president of Akindo Sushiro, said, "We believe that selling items without fixed prices can result in better sushi for customers. For example, products that have been difficult to offer because they don't fit our price menu, or those that taste better with a larger cut."

Sushiro raised the price of its cheapest dishes from 78 cents to 85 cents last October amid surging costs. The change proved unpopular, with sales and customer numbers falling afterward.

The Philippine Coast Guard will hold a drill with its Japanese and US counterparts from Thursday in waters around Manila Bay.

Officials from the three countries met Monday at coast guard headquarters in Manila.

They confirmed they will strengthen cooperation, apparently with China's increasing activities in the South China Sea in mind.

Some 400 personnel will take part in the weeklong drill. They will practice intercepting illegal fishing boats and staging rescue operations.

Rear Adm. Armand Balilo, the Philippine Coast Guard's public affairs commander, said: "It will enhance interoperability. It will give us a glimpse of the best practices that we can emulate from our counterparts."

The Japan Coast Guard will send the patrol vessel Akitsushima.

A senior North Korean foreign ministry official has suggested that talks between leader Kim Jong Un and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio could be possible if Tokyo drops its preconditions.

Kishida indicated on Saturday that he is ready to start high-level talks without preconditions to secure the return of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea decades ago.

Vice-minister of foreign affairs Pak Sang Gil released a statement on Monday through the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

Pak said Japan is in fact, "clamoring for settlement over the abduction issue, which had already been resolved," and putting forward the resolution of the issue of North Korea's right to self-defense as a precondition for improving bilateral relations.

He said there is no reason for a summit not to take place, if Japan tries to make a new decision "in conformity with the changed international trend and the times, not being shackled by the past, and seeks a way out for improving the relations."

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has indicated he is ready to start high-level talks to secure the return of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea decades ago.

Kishida spoke on Saturday at an event organized by relatives of the abductees.

Kishida said it was extremely regrettable that none of the abductees have returned to Japan since 2002.

He said their families are elderly and the abductions are a humanitarian issue with a time constraint, adding that there is no time to waste.

He pledged his all-out efforts to realize the return of all the abductees as soon as possible.

Kishida explained that he asked the leaders from the Group of Seven countries at the latest summit in Hiroshima for their understanding and cooperation so the issue can be resolved immediately.

He said the G7 leaders expressed their full support. He pointed to the necessity for Japan to act proactively, while appealing to the international community.

Kishida reiterated his willingness to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un without preconditions.

He said the longer the current situation continues, the more difficult it could become to establish fruitful relations between Japan and North Korea.

The prime minister said he will not miss any chance to convey his determination to the North, from the viewpoint of resolving the pending issue and opening a new era together.

Kishida said he wants to start high-level talks under his direct control to hold a summit with North Korea at an early date.

The Japanese government says at least 17 of its citizens were abducted by North Korean agents in the 1970s and 1980s. Five returned in 2002, but the other 12 remain unaccounted for.

Ukrainian broadcasting officials are visiting NHK to see how Japan's public broadcaster runs backup operations in times of emergency.

The head of Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine spoke in Tokyo.

Mykola Chernotytskyi, head of the Managing Board of Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine, said, "Since the Russian invasion started, we have been trying as much as possible to convey correctly to the world what is happening in Ukraine."

The company was established six years ago through the integration of the state-run TV station and regional broadcasters.
Last year, Russian forces struck the main television tower in Kyiv. This came after the broadcaster had already decided to move out of the capital to ensure it could continue operations.

The Ukrainians will also visit NHK's facilities in Osaka. They will see how operations there prepare to fill a backup role in the event of a major disaster in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Ukraine's broadcaster is as well aiming to beef up its regional bureaus as well. It wants to give people the latest information despite the difficult conditions of the invasion.

Chernotytskyi says he wants to set up a system that allows reporters to visit not only major cities but also other areas of states within an hour of something happening.

To this end, they will also learn about the cooperation between NHK's headquarters and regional bureaus. Their visit concludes on Friday.

A professional baseball league and team have been launched in Indonesia for the first time.

Officials from Neo Asia League and its team, Asia Golden Larks, held a news conference Monday in Jakarta. The league is funded by a Japanese company.

Nonaka Kazuto chairs the league. He coached the national teams of Indonesia and Sri Lanka for a total of 11 years. Nonaka led Indonesia's national team to the Asian Baseball Cup title in 2009.

The team has signed up 22 players from countries including Indonesia, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
The Golden Larks plans to join an independent league next year in Japan's southwest island of Kyushu.

The team's captain, Rizki Ramadhan, said: "I hope young players will be able to take the field in Japan. I expect them to be role models. That would help develop baseball in Indonesia."

League officials aim to attract sponsors so they can add teams from across Asia in the future.

Japanese government sources say North Korea has notified the International Maritime Organization of its plan to launch what it calls an artificial satellite sometime between May 31 and June 11.

The Japanese government suspects that Pyongyang plans to launch a ballistic missile under the pretext of putting a satellite into orbit.

The government's task force at the prime minister's office is collecting and analyzing information.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has instructed relevant ministries and agencies to provide people with information appropriately through thorough gathering and analysis of intelligence.

He said Japan will work closely with the United States and South Korea, and strongly urge Pyongyang to exercise self-restraint.

Kishida instructed government agencies to take all possible measures to prepare for any type of event.

Last month, North Korea announced that its first military reconnaissance satellite had been completed. The North also said it would step up final preparations so that the satellite can be launched at the planned date.

In February 2016, Pyongyang launched a ballistic missile under the pretext of putting an artificial satellite into orbit.

One of Hong Kong's major pro-democracy parties has decided to disband amid growing pressure from Beijing.

The Civic Party made the decision after its members took a vote on Saturday.

Party Chairman Alan Leong said it would be difficult for the party to continue, as there are no valid nominations for executive committee members or a new chairman.

The Civic Party was founded in 2006 by lawyers, scholars and others. It has called for electoral seats to be directly chosen by citizens.

Support for the party grew in 2019, in the wake of a series of anti-government protests.

The party won 32 seats in the 2019 district council elections. That was the second largest number among the pro-democracy parties.

But the following year, Beijing implemented a national security law and tightened its control over pro-democracy activists. Civic Party lawmakers were stripped of their qualifications or arrested and indicted.

Beijing also revamped Hong Kong's electoral system. The changes made it difficult for pro-democracy candidates to run. The Civic Party could not field candidates in the 2021 Legislative Council election.

The May Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo has given the impression that the sport's environment is returning to what it used to be before the coronavirus pandemic.

The tournament opened on May 14, several days after the government downgraded the legal status of the coronavirus to the same category as seasonal flu. It ended on Sunday.

The tournament took place without a limit on spectator numbers, the first such arrangement in about three years for a sumo grand tourney at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena in the Japanese capital.

The 15-day tournament was filled to capacity throughout, with many foreign tourists visible among the spectators.

Fans have been allowed to cheer in arenas since this year's January tournament. But other basic anti-infection measures are in place, such as sanitizing hands.

Since just before the May tournament, wrestlers have been allowed to take part in joint training between stables by the day before the tourney's opening. This represents a significant improvement for a practice environment.

Japan Sumo Association Chairman Hakkaku said he is grateful that the tickets for the tournament were sold out. He said wrestlers have continued to endure tough situations, including no-spectator days.

The tournament ended with Yokozuna Grand Champion Terunofuji capping a comeback from injuries by clinching the championship with 14 wins and one loss.

Sekiwake Kiribayama is certain to get promoted to the second highest rank of Ozeki champion as he racked up a total of 34 wins in the most recent three tournaments. That is one above the purported threshold required for such a promotion.

He will be the first new Ozeki since Mitakeumi advanced to the rank after the January 2022 tournament.

A deadly incident in central Japan on Thursday claimed the lives of two women and two police officers. The attacker's possible motives are being revealed that he thought the women looked down upon him.

Police arrested a male suspect Aoki Masanori, who runs a local farming business in Nagano Prefecture.

Two older female residents living nearby were stabbed to death while they were apparently taking a walk together. A witness said when police officers arrived at the scene, Aoki approached their patrol car and shot them at close range with his hunting rifle.

After the attacks, Aoki holed himself up in his home for about 12 hours and his father tried to persuade him to come out and surrender.

Police say Aoki then told his father that he thought the two women, who he apparently did not know well, were making fun of him as a "loner" when they were taking a walk and chatting.

The father reportedly said his son often overreacted to the word "loner" as he was bullied and teased when he was a university student.

Aoki dropped out of university and his father reportedly helped him take part in a group working to preserve a local festival. But after a few years, the son stopped taking part in the group.

A man who worked with Aoki, explained that the son was not a very active member of the group. He said Aoki did not speak with others unless someone talked to him.

A social psychology expert says people who have few interpersonal experiences tend to feel lonelier if they cannot get along well with others.

Igarashi Tasuku, associate professor of Nagoya University, said, "Repeatedly going though such failures could lead to what is called cognitive bias, where an individual begins to distrust others and finally would not trust anyone."

Igarashi added it is generally believed among psychology experts that loneliness alone would not lead to such vicious attacks, and therefore some different cause was apparently responsible.

A former member of Japanese talent agency Johnny & Associates says he will set up a contact point for people who allege they were sexually abused by its late founder.

Hashida Yasushi spoke to reporters on Friday at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan in Tokyo.

The 37-year-old actor and dancer is one of the former members who have come forward about alleged sexual misconduct by Johnny Kitagawa, who died in 2019.

Hashida says Kitagawa sexually abused him about a year after he joined the agency in 1998. Hashida was a member for seven years until he was 19.

He said he wants to gather the allegations of other victims and deliver them to the agency.

He also disclosed a plan to launch a petition requesting revisions to the law on preventing child abuse in cooperation with those who say they were victimized.

Hashida stressed that no one should become a victim of sexual abuse, and resolving this issue will help address sexual violence in the entertainment industry and elsewhere.

The agency's current president Julie K. Fujishima offered an apology over the allegations of sexual misconduct on May 14.

Hashida added that he wants the agency to face the problems swiftly, settle its past and make a fresh start.

China's new domestically-produced passenger jet has started commercial operation.

The C919, developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, made its debut on Sunday with a trip from Shanghai to Beijing. The flight was operated by China Eastern Airlines.

State-run Xinhua news agency reported that the aircraft was delivered to the Shanghai-based carrier in December last year.

The new aircraft has about 160 seats. It will compete with the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737, which are widely used in China.

The state-owned developer is said to have received orders for more than 1,000 of the new aircraft, mainly from Chinese carriers.

The Chinese government has been working to domestically develop passenger aircraft as part of its goal of becoming a manufacturing powerhouse.

The ARJ21, a smaller domestically-produced passenger aircraft, already operates on flights connecting regional cities in the country.

US President Joe Biden says he and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy have reached an agreement in principle to raise the country's debt ceiling.

Biden reached a tentative agreement with the top congressional Republican on Saturday, just nine days before the US government was to default on its debts.

In a statement released by the White House, Biden said the agreement is good news for the American people because it prevents what could have been a catastrophic default that would have led to an economic recession.

McCarthy told reporters that there is still a lot of work to be done but that he believes this is an agreement that is worthy of the American people.
McCarthy said he will write a bill to raise the ceiling and put it to a vote in the House on Wednesday.

Representatives from both sides were continuing negotiations earlier on Saturday, even after Congress went into recess for the Memorial Day weekend.

US media reports say that Biden and McCarthy talked on the phone for 90 minutes starting at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Neither side has disclosed specifics of the agreement. The Reuters reports that the deal would raise the debt limit for two years, while capping spending over that time.

The US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen had warned that the United States will run out of money to pay its debts on June 5 at the earliest. The deal has averted what could have been the first ever default for the United States.

Trade ministers from 14 countries in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity have reached a substantial conclusion in their negotiations on supply chains. But an uphill battle is expected to make a deal on the remaining issues.

The IPEF partners met on Saturday in Detroit, Michigan, aiming for agreements in four areas. But when it came to three other areas such as trade in which workers' rights are at stake, the US and developing countries just could not see eye to eye.

The IPEF partners include Japan, the US and India.

The US sees the IPEF as a new economic zone to ultimately replace the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership, or the CPTPP, as China increases its influence in the region.

But experts point out that the emerging economies do not see it that way. Countries that are eager to expand exports to places like the US are rather feeling dubious about the IPEF, as the new framework does not ensure tariff reductions which are normally included in an economic partnership.

Despite these differences, the US hopes to reach an across-the-board conclusion at a summit meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in November this year.

Trade ministers of 14 countries participating in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity have announced a substantial conclusion of strengthening supply chains.

The meeting in Detroit, Michigan, closed on Saturday with joint statements.

The IPEF is an economic partnership which includes Japan, the US and India.

The meeting was held against the backdrop of China's increasing global influence. The partners began their negotiations last year in four areas. "Strengthening supply chains" was the area they were able to agree on at the meeting.

The members said they will increase the resilience and security of supply chains by relying on each other in case of disruptions of supply routes of key goods such as semiconductors during a crisis.

The countries are said to have agreed to introduce a new framework for technological cooperation and supply networks to promote hydrogen as a next generation energy.

At a news conference, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo stressed the significance of the outcome. She noted that it is the first-of-its-kind international supply chain agreement.

She added that further cooperation among the countries will help improve business environment.

They will continue negotiations to aim for early agreements in the remaining three areas such as tax, trade and clean energy.

People in Turkey will head to the polls on Sunday to vote in a presidential runoff election.

The contest between the incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Kemal Kilicdaroglu is expected to be close. Kilicdaroglu is the head of the largest opposition party and the joint candidate of six opposition parties.

Neither of the candidates secured the majority needed to win outright during the first round of voting on May 14.

Erdogan led the race with 49.5 percent of the votes. He has highlighted his achievements as prime minister and president over the past 20 years. Erdogan has also been taking credit for a deal that he helped broker between Russia and Ukraine. The deal enables Ukrainian farm products to be exported via the Black Sea.

Kilicdaroglu won about 44.8 percent of the votes in the first round. He has criticized Erdogan's response to runaway inflation in the country and the plunge in the value of Turkey's currency. He has also accused the president of governing with an iron fist.

A survey conducted by Turkish pollster Konda last weekend showed Erdogan leading Kilicdaroglu by nearly five percentage points. About eight percent of the respondents said they were undecided. Those undecided voters will likely determine the outcome of the election, as the runoff is expected to be close.

The polls will open at 8 a.m. on Sunday local time.

Russia's government is hinting at countermeasures in light of Japan's decision to impose additional sanctions on the country.

In Tokyo on Friday, the Cabinet approved the new measures that include freezing the assets of another 102 individuals and organizations.

The decision came after the G7 leaders agreed at the Hiroshima Summit earlier this month to strengthen sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Russia is increasing pressure on Japan as it holds the rotating presidency of the G7 this year.

Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that Tokyo seems to be determined to assume a leadership role in anti-Russian restrictions.

The ministry added that such illegitimate actions will not go unanswered.

Russia's Foreign Ministry also took issue with Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu's comment that Russia's deployment of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus would escalate tensions.

The ministry said Japan is trying to accuse Moscow of nuclear blackmail, and labelled it as nothing more than unscrupulous speculation.

The British ambassador to Japan has spoken with NHK about the media blitz that caught the attention of people in Japan during a recent visit by the UK prime minister.

Rishi Sunak visited Japan for four days through May 21 for the G7 summit in Hiroshima. He and the embassy posted many of his activities on social media.

Ambassador Julia Longbottom said on Friday that photographs and moving images are more likely to engage people. She said it's very valuable for her country if people can connect on a personal level.

One post showed photos of Sunak's meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio. He wore red socks bearing the logo of the summit host city's baseball team.

"I understand that Hiroshima Toyo Carp has a lot of meaning for people in the city. It was a team set up in 1949 after the war," Longbottom said. "It was a nice gesture and a little bit of the fun side of the United Kingdom."

Images of Sunak making Hiroshima's local pancakes wearing an orange apron also went viral in Japan.

"I'm delighted that people were happy and enjoyed seeing him in such a typical Japanese surrounding," said the ambassador." It was quite nice to show that side of his personality for Japanese people to see something of the character of the British Prime Minister."

Sunak also visited an izakaya pub in Tokyo. Instead of going to a typical luxury area, he chose Shibuya, a district that younger people frequent. The British leader visited Japan when he was younger.

"I think he was very excited to rediscover that atmosphere of Japan, the delicious food and the fun," she said. "I think it helped to symbolize the depth of relationship between the UK and Japan and the love of Japan that the Prime Minister has."

Sunak's visit came as his administration seeks stronger ties with Japan and other Indo-Pacific economies following Brexit. Analysts say he may continue to send out more messages to people in those areas.

Japanese actor Yakusho Koji has won the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in the movie "Perfect Days." The film was directed by Germany's Wim Wenders.

Prizes were announced in the French resort city on Saturday, the final day of the event. Cannes is one of the world's three major film festivals, along with Venice and Berlin.

"Perfect Days" is set in Shibuya, Tokyo. The main character, played by Yakusho, makes a living cleaning public toilets.

It is the first time in 19 years that a Japanese actor has won the prize. In 2004, Yagira Yuya became the first Japanese to earn the award for his role in "Nobody Knows." That film was directed by Koreeda Hirokazu.
Japanese screenwriter Sakamoto Yuji won the Best Screenplay prize for "Monster," also directed by Koreeda Hirokazu.

The last time a Japanese film earned the Best Screenplay was in 2021 with "Drive My Car." Director Hamaguchi Ryusuke and scriptwriter Oe Takamasa received the honors.

The top prize, the Palme d'Or, went to the French mystery "Anatomy of a Fall", directed by Justine Triet.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has set an estimated deadline of June 5 for raising the country's debt limit to avoid default. Her previous estimate was as early as June 1.

Yellen urged quick action in a letter on Friday to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other Congressional leaders.

She wrote that the Treasury Department will make more than 130 billion dollars' worth of scheduled payments in the first two days of June, including those to veterans as well as Social Security and Medicare recipients.

She added that these payments will leave Treasury with an extremely low level of resources.

She warned the Congressional leaders that past debt impasses show that waiting until the last minute can cause serious harm, including a negative impact on US credit ratings.

She wrote, "If Congress fails to increase the debt limit, it would cause severe hardship to American families, harm our global leadership position, and raise questions about our ability to defend our national security interests."

Japan and the United States have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of next-generation semiconductors.

Japanese Economy Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi and US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo discussed economic prosperity and security on Friday in Detroit, Michigan.

A joint statement issued after the meeting says the two countries will encourage cooperation in road-mapping for technological and human resource development. It also says they will cooperate to identify and resolve geographic concentrations of production undermining semiconductor supply-chain resilience.

Following their talks, Nishimura told reporters that he and Raimondo agreed to hold a second US-Japan economic two-plus-two meeting as soon as possible. The first took place last July in Washington.

He added that the joint statement will help to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the field of economic security.

Brazil's government has announced that the 2025 UN conference on climate change, known as COP30, will be held in Belem in the Amazon region.

Belem is a major city of 1.5 million people near the mouth of the Amazon River in the country's north. It will be Brazil's first time to host the UN climate conference.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in a video call on Friday that the Amazon was widely discussed at every COP conference he has taken part in.

He added that he wanted his country to host the conference so that people can see and get to know the Amazon and its tropical rainforest.

As president-elect, Lula had expressed a willingness to host a COP conference at the COP27 in November, 2022, in Egypt.

Two-thirds of the Amazon rainforest is in Brazil. Deforestation accelerated under Lula's predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, who promoted development over conservation.

Deforestation is so far down 40 percent from the same period last year since Lula took office in January.

Lula apparently hopes to demonstrate to the international community his administration's commitment to conserving the Amazon and its rainforest.

A US court has sentenced the founder of a far-right extremist group to 18 years in prison in connection with the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol by supporters of former US President Donald Trump.

The federal district court in Washington handed down the sentence for Stewart Rhodes on Thursday. US media say it is the heaviest punishment given so far to any of the more than 600 people found guilty of involvement in the riot.

Rhodes, the founder of the Oath Keepers, is accused of plotting to use force to overturn the election defeat of then US President Trump and obstruct a peaceful transition of power. He was convicted in November of last year on charges of seditious conspiracy.

The Justice Department said Rhodes sent a text to supporters stating, "We aren't getting through this without a civil war" and bought weapons with him in an attempt to occupy the Capitol.

Before handing down the sentence, the judge said, "You, sir, present an ongoing threat and a peril to this country."

Rhodes remained defiant saying, "Like President Trump, my only crime is opposing those who are destroying our country."

The court also sentenced three other Oath Keepers to prison terms ranging from four to 12 years.

The president of debt-riddled Sri Lanka aims to conclude negotiations with creditors including Japan by October at the latest.

Speaking to NHK in Tokyo on Friday, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said, "We'd like to finish it off by September, October, before I present the budget in November."

Sri Lanka suspended external debt payments in April of last year. Fiscal policy failures and other factors triggered price rises and a sharp depreciation of the country's currency.

The first round of restructuring talks took place earlier this month. China is believed to be Sri Lanka's largest creditor, but attended only as an observer.

Wickremesinghe urged Beijing to participate in the discussion, saying, "We have proposed that everyone joins together."

The Sri Lankan leader met Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on Thursday. He says he told Kishida that his country intends to apply for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. And he says he wants Sri Lanka to join a trans-Pacific trade agreement known as the CPTPP.

A Ukrainian man wounded by Russian shelling is returning to his country after spending one year receiving treatment in Japan.

Anton Kornishuk departed from Narita Airport near Tokyo on Friday night.

The 38-year-old was seriously hurt in a Russian mortar attack near Kyiv in March last year. He was serving as a combat medic at the time.

Kornishuk was studying Japanese at a university in Lviv in western Ukraine. He came to Japan in May last year with the help of his teacher and others, and was admitted to Chiba University Hospital.

He told NHK that he is grateful to the hospital staff, but has mixed feelings about heading home.

Kornishuk said he will rejoin the fight against Russia and enter the military as soon as he is ready.

Physician Matsuura Yusuke says Kornishuk has recovered beyond expectations. The doctor added that he does not want his patient to engage in fighting.

Matsuura also said he would like to visit Ukraine once peace has been restored.

Asiana Airlines says 194 people were on the domestic flight. Some passengers were taken to hospital with breathing difficulties. Their symptoms are said not to be serious.

The airline says an emergency door suddenly opened at an altitude of about 200 meters, shortly before the plane was to land in Daegu. The plane had taken off from the southern island of Jeju.

Footage posted on social media shows wind blowing through the open door buffeting passenger's hair and seat covers.

Asiana says a man in his 30s seated just in front of the emergency exit has admitted opening the door.

Police in central Japan have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the killing of four people, including two police officers, in a shooting and stabbing attack.

Police have identified the suspect as Aoki Masanori, the son of Nakano City assembly speaker Aoki Masamichi.

Police say Aoki has confessed to killing one of the officers, saying, "It's true that I shot him. I killed him."
Investigative sources say Aoki told police he carried out the knife attack because he thought he was being spoken ill of, and he shot the officers because he thought they might shoot him.

After the killings, Aoki barricaded himself in the house where he lives with his parents and an aunt. Police say he was armed with a rifle and the standoff lasted for about 12 hours. When he emerged from the house at around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, they detained him.

Police received a report at around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday saying a man had stabbed a woman. When officers arrived at the scene, the man opened fire on them with what appeared to be a hunting rifle. The woman and two police officers died. Another woman found later lying on the ground at the scene was confirmed dead.

The suspect fled on foot and holed himself up in his father's house.

Nagano Prefectural Police chief Koyama Iwao has given a news conference in which he called it an "extremely vicious crime." He said the suspect has confessed, but gave no further details.

A police official at the news conference said officers assumed they were responding to a knife attack, but it turned so quickly into a shooting that they had no time to prepare, and the officers were not wearing bulletproof vests when they were shot.

Koyama says the suspect's mother and aunt managed to escape from the house.

Police officials say the suspect did not make any requests to the police while he was barricaded in the house. They say they persuaded him to surrender with his hands up.

One neighbor says the murdered women were good friends, and often strolled around together.

The suspect's father has resigned from the city assembly.

The police say the suspect received a permit to keep a shotgun in 2015, and for other types of guns later. He currently has permits to possess four firearms.

Gun ownership numbers are low in Japan and gun crime is rare. Last year, there were just nine gun-related incidents reported nationwide. The incidents resulted in four deaths.

China appears to be bracing for a fresh wave of coronavirus cases, with an infectious disease expert saying weekly numbers could hit 65 million at the end of June.

Beijing's health authorities on Wednesday said the number of infectious disease cases reported in the capital in the week up to Sunday topped 25,000. They said COVID-19 accounted for the largest number of these for the fourth straight week.

China's coronavirus situation is difficult to grasp after the government ended its zero-COVID policy in January and stopped releasing domestic infection data after April.

But the infectious disease expert on Monday said weekly new cases in the country are likely to reach 40 million at the end of May and 65 million at the end of June.

Amid the uptrend in new cases, health officials are urging people in Beijing to take thorough precautions, including wearing masks on public transportation.

Cambodia's Prime Minister has warned Western nations not to interfere in his country's internal affairs, ahead of its upcoming general election in July.

Hun Sen spoke in the capital Phnom Penh on Tuesday. His remarks came amid growing international concern over the election, after the country's major opposition party was disqualified from taking part.

"Cambodia is an independent and sovereign country," Hun Sen said. Addressing Western nations, he added, "I would like you all to understand that from now until the election, please be silent."

Cambodia's election committee rejected the Candlelight Party's registration earlier this month, claiming the opposition party did not submit necessary documents.

This was not the first time the opposition has been excluded from elections. Candlelight, which came in second in last year's local races, was established after courts forced the Cambodia National Rescue Party to disband in 2018.

The European Union's diplomatic service released a statement after Candlelight's registration was rejected. It called the development a "worrying sign," and said the EU strongly objects to the decision.

A statement from a US Embassy spokesperson in Cambodia cited "threats and incidents of harassment" against media and the opposition, which it said impede the Cambodian people's participation in democracy.

Prime Minister Hun Sen has been in power for nearly four decades. Cambodia holds general elections every five years. At its previous vote in 2018, the ruling party claimed all 125 seats.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has told Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin that relations between the two countries are developing at a high level.

Xi and Mishustin met in Beijing on Wednesday. Mishustin arrived in China the previous day on his first official visit there since he took office.

A Russian state-run news agency reported that Xi hailed the developing ties of the two nations and their cooperation in various fields.

Chinese state-run media quoted Xi as saying China is willing to continue working with Russia to firmly support each other on issues involving each other's core interests.

Xi stressed that China hopes to strengthen collaboration with Russia in multilateral forums such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Group of 20 economies.

Mishustin pointed to growing tension in the international situation. He said Russia and China are jointly standing against attempts by Western nations to use what he called illegal sanctions to maintain their influence on the world and impose their will on other countries.

Analysts say China and Russia are stressing their closer ties in an apparent bid to keep the Group of Seven countries in check. At their recent summit in the western Japanese city of Hiroshima, the G7 nations showed unity in taking a tough stance against Beijing and Moscow.

Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific Airways says it has dismissed three flight attendants accused of discrimination against non-English speakers.

The accusation was made online against the crewmembers of the airline's flight from the Chinese city of Chengdu to Hong Kong on Sunday.

Hong Kong media say they made fun of a passenger who mixed up the English terms "carpet" and "blanket." In what appears to be a recording from the flight that circulated widely online, someone says, "If you cannot say 'blanket' in English, you cannot have it."

The post went viral, drawing accusations of discrimination against Chinese speakers.

Cathay Pacific CEO Ronald Lam said on Wednesday that the airline had fired the three, and extended his "sincerest apologies." He said he would conduct a comprehensive review of services and staff training, and vowed to enhance the airline's service.

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said on Wednesday that he was disappointed to learn about the incident and urged the airline to prevent a recurrence.

Japanese author Murakami Haruki has won Spain's Princess of Asturias Award for Literature this year. It is one of the most prestigious awards in Europe.

The Princess of Asturias Foundation announced on Wednesday that the jury chose Murakami from among 37 candidates of 17 nationalities.

The foundation says, "A cult author who has been translated into more than forty languages, according to specialists Murakami is an unnerving writer, with a prose that reveals the influences of authors such as Dostoyevsky, Dickens, Capote and Vargas Llosa."

It goes on to say that in his works, "He employs an intimate tone -- at times surrealistic and with traces of humour and suspension of belief."

It adds he "confronts the most serious social problems and the fight to defend essential human values."

The Princess of Asturias Awards are often called Spain's Nobel Prizes. They cover eight categories, including arts, literature, sports, and technical and scientific research.

It is the first time that a Japanese person has won the literature award.

In 1999, Japanese astronaut Mukai Chiaki received the honor in the international cooperation category. Last year, another Japanese, architect Ban Shigeru was given the award for concord.

Kishida said that Japan will provide high-mobility vehicles that can accommodate 10 people, as well as carrier dump trucks owned by the Ground Self-Defense Force. About 30,000 emergency food rations will also be offered.

On Wednesday, a ceremony was held at the Defense Ministry in Tokyo. State Minister of Defense Ino Toshiro handed to Ukraine's ambassador to Japan the list of materials to be sent.

Ino said all of the vehicles have played important roles in GSDF missions. He said they will be collected from units across Japan and transported to Ukraine.

Ambassador Sergiy Korsunsky expressed heartfelt gratitude and described Japan as Ukraine's trusted, crucial partner.

The Defense Ministry also plans to accept two injured Ukrainian soldiers at a Self-Defense Forces hospital next month.

A team of South Korean experts has completed its examination of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to assess the safety of Japan's plan to discharge treated and diluted water into the ocean.

The delegation of about 20 members includes senior officials of South Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, as well as marine environment specialists.

They examined the nuclear plant on Wednesday, the final day of their two-day visit.

Yoo Guk-hee, the chief of the delegation, later told reporters that the team looked at equipment for diluting treated water and releasing it into the sea.

He also said they checked facilities including one for analyzing radioactive substances in treated water.

On Thursday, the experts are scheduled to have final talks with Japanese government officials and others in Tokyo. They are due to return to South Korea on Friday.

Japan plans to release treated water after diluting it to reduce tritium levels to one-seventh of the World Health Organization's safety standards for drinking water.

The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, is preparing to start releasing water by around this summer.

Japan's government says it hopes understanding will be deepened and concerns dispelled in South Korea through the visit.

South Korea's government says the purpose of the visit was to meticulously verify the effects on South Korean waters and marine products and to promptly take necessary steps.

A team of South Korean experts has started a four-day survey in Japan to check on the safety of treated and diluted water from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant that is slated to be released into the sea.

Under the government plan, the treated water from the plant will be diluted to reduce tritium levels to meet World Health Organization safety standards for drinking water before it is released into the ocean.

Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator of the plant, is making preparations for a first release around this summer.

The Japanese and South Korean leaders agreed at their summit on May 7 that Seoul would send experts for an on-site survey in Japan.

The team of about 30 includes senior officials of the country's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and marine environment experts. They arrived in Japan on Sunday and will stay through Friday.

Sources say the team held talks with Japanese government officials on Monday. The officials reportedly told the team about progress of construction work needed to facilitate the release.

The team will make a two-day visit to the plant starting Tuesday to examine how the treated water is stored and see an analysis of data on the water.

Concerns are being voiced in South Korea about the release of the treated and diluted water.

Tokyo wants to use this occasion and any other opportunity it gets to convince Seoul that the plan ensures the safety of such a release.

Seoul says the team was sent to understand how released water would impact South Korea's territorial waters and fisheries products. It says it will promptly take necessary measures based on the team's findings.

South Korea currently bans certain fisheries products from Fukushima and several other prefectures due to safety concerns over radioactive contamination.

Honda says it will return to Formula One racing in the 2026 season, after withdrawing in 2021. The automaker has a deal to provide Aston Martin with hybrid engines.
The team will be called Aston Martin Aramco Honda.

Honda Motor President and CEO Mibe Toshihiro said, "The technology and know-how gained from F1 could be directly used in future mass-production electric vehicles, including our flagship sports models."

Honda in 1964 became the first Japanese automaker to participate in the world's top motor race. Engines made by the company were in many cars that won from the late '80s to early '90s.

Honda more recently said it would concentrate its managerial resources on its de-carbonization efforts, and formally withdrew in 2021.

The automaker aims to shift its global new car sales entirely to EVs and fuel cell vehicles by 2040.

Honda says it decided to return to the race because rules starting in the 2026 season are in line with the company's policy to pursue de-carbonization.

Honda explained that F1 will require use of sustainable fuel and that a race vehicle get at least half of its power from a source other than a combustion engine.

South Korea and the United States have imposed more sanctions against North Korea over its suspected illegal cyber activities designed to finance the country's nuclear and missile development.

South Korea's Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that it newly blacklisted three organizations and seven individuals.

Two of the organizations are affiliated with North Korea's defense ministry or ruling Workers' Party. The third is an academy for tech and cyber training.

The ministry said the organizations illicitly earned money by sending engineers to Russia, China and Laos to engage in building cryptocurrency trading systems.

South Korea has accused North Korean engineers of earning millions of dollars a year by going abroad under fake identities and working.

The US Treasury Department announced on Tuesday that it sanctioned four North Korean entities and one person for their suspected involvement in cryptocurrency theft.

The entities include a training institution for "malicious cyber actors" and an intelligence agency unit.

The department said North Korea "conducts malicious cyber activities" to support "its unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs."

China has urged the International Atomic Energy Agency to properly handle Japan's plan to release treated and diluted water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang made the request to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi at their meeting in Beijing on Tuesday.

The Foreign Ministry quoted Qin as saying that China supports IAEA efforts to make new contributions to promote world peace and security. He also urged the agency to perform its duties in an objective and fair manner.

Qin expressed hope that the IAEA will properly handle the Japanese plan and safeguard the agency's authority and credibility.

Grossi reportedly said the IAEA will not agree to any activities that violate international safety standards.

China has opposed the plan, calling it a grave issue that concerns human health and safety.

Japan's government says the water will be diluted to bring down the level of radioactive tritium before being released into the ocean.

A surprise fashion choice by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has led to a sales run on the branded socks of a Japanese professional baseball team.

Sunak sported a pair of the red official socks of Hiroshima Toyo Carp, from Hiroshima City, western Japan, when he met Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio at a bilateral summit in the city last Thursday.

Now, the social media buzz around the unusual footwear selection has led to them selling out.

Sunak was visiting Japan to attend the Group of Seven Summit. The baseball team is a favorite of Kishida, whose constituency is in Hiroshima.

Comments on social media included praise for Sunak's playfulness, which one author said felt, "typically British." Others spoke of how happy the incident made the team's fans.

The firm selling official team products says its Hiroshima shop in the city sold out of the socks, including those in different colors, by Saturday. It said new deliveries are expected in the middle of next month.

One woman came to buy a pair for her 5-year-old nephew, who wanted them after watching the British prime minister wearing them on television. She vowed to visit the shop again to buy the socks.

Murai Satoko, who designed the socks, said she never dreamed that the British prime minister would wear them. She added that she's excited to know that he was thinking about the city.

Taiwan has not been allowed to participate in the World Health Organization's annual assembly as an observer, due to opposition from China and other countries.

Taiwan was excluded from the assembly in Geneva for the seventh year in a row, after officials from member nations decided on Monday not to consider whether Taiwan should be allowed into the meeting. Taiwan is not a WHO member, but it attended the annual gathering as an observer for eight years through 2016.

This year's assembly, which runs from May 21 to 30, is expected to feature discussions on what steps countries can take to prepare for a future pandemic.

Western countries have shown support for Taiwan's participation, citing its achievements in fighting the coronavirus.

The United States said Taiwan's public health expertise and advanced technology would bring considerable value to the organization.

During a meeting on Monday, a representative from the Chinese government said Taiwan is part of Chinese territory and that the matter should be considered based on the "One China" principle.

Taiwan's foreign ministry, meanwhile, said in a statement that it's a matter of public health and politics should not be prioritized.

It's been a week since deadly Cyclone Mocha battered Myanmar. People in affected areas are suffering serious food shortages because the country's military junta hasn't allowed international organizations to provide full-scale assistance.

The western state of Rakhine was hardest hit. It's a region where the military has been suppressing minority Rohingya Muslims. In footage obtained by NHK, people are seen eating rice soaked in seawater.

"Finding food is a huge problem," a male villager said.
"Every time we eat damaged rice, it upsets our stomachs."

The pro-democracy National Unity Government opposing the military rulers says the cyclone killed 435 people. That figure is expected to rise.

The United Nations began stockpiling relief supplies even before Mocha made landfall in Myanmar. But the junta hasn't issued the UN permits allowing it to freely travel in Rakhine and other badly damaged areas. The world body continues to ask military officials to let it in and help with its aid activities.

China's foreign ministry says it has summoned the Japanese ambassador over references to Beijing-related issues in statements announced at the Group of Seven summit in the city of Hiroshima.

The ministry says Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong lodged "representations" with Japan's ambassador, Tarumi Hideo, on Sunday.

The ministry also quotes Sun as stressing that the move undermines China's sovereignty, security and development interests. It adds that he expressed China's strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition.

Japan's embassy in Beijing says Tarumi responded that it is natural and will remain so for the G7 to refer to its shared concerns as it has done so far, unless China changes its behavior. It says Tarumi also urged China to take a positive response.

South Korean nuclear experts are now in Japan to check on the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The visit comes ahead of the release of treated and diluted water from the facility into the ocean around this summer. Seoul has raised concerns about the plan.

Ahead of their visit to the plant, Japanese officials briefed them on Monday about the water release procedures and the construction of the pipeline into the sea.

Water used to cool molten nuclear fuel mixes with rain and groundwater. It has been treated to remove most of the radioactive materials, but the filtered water still contains some tritium.

The government plans to release it after it has been diluted to well within Japan's safety limits. Officials say it will even clear the World Health Organization's suggested levels for drinking water.

The South Korean delegation is scheduled to visit the Fukushima plant for two days from Tuesday to confirm how the water is stored and the safety levels.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu said, "Japan will carefully explain that the water will be treated to meet the safety standards, and then will be diluted with seawater. We will try to build understanding in South Korea regarding the safety of the release."

Officials in Seoul have said their team will investigate the potential effects on South Korea's oceans and marine products and immediately implement necessary measures.

Eight opposition parties in Thailand have signed an agreement on a joint platform that they hope will help them form a coalition government.

The alliance is led by the Move Forward Party, which won the largest number of seats in the recent general election, but fell short of winning a majority.

The eight parties signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday. It calls for a new constitution to be drafted and military conscription to be abolished.

But the memorandum did not include a plan to revise the law that prohibits people from insulting the monarchy. That was one of Move Forward's election pledges. Other parties are cautious about such a revision.

The Pheu Thai Party, which is affiliated with former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is a member of the alliance. The party placed second in the election.

However, the eight parties still do not have a majority of the combined lower house and senate seats. If they clear that threshold, they will have the power to choose the prime minister.

The parties plan to court the votes of some senators. But it is unclear if the effort will pay off, as members of the senate were appointed by the military government that was installed following a coup.

Fully self-driving vehicles have hit the road in a town in central Japan. They are the first ones allowed to run on a public road in the country.

Under a law revised in April, so-called Level-4 driverless vehicles can operate on limited routes at restricted speeds.

The passenger transport service was launched in Fukui Prefecture. Industry minister Nishimura Yasutoshi took a test ride.

The driverless electric cart traveled a roughly two-kilometer route trouble-free in around 10 minutes.
The service operator can run them at up to 12 kilometers per hour.

It previously offered a service with Level-3 autonomous vehicles. These allow for humans to take over in emergencies.

Nishimura said, "Regional communities face declining birthrates, an aging society and depopulation. We aim to provide technology to address such problems and lead the world in self-driving development."

The Japanese government hopes to see fully autonomous driving services launched in about 50 locations by around fiscal 2025.

A ceremony was held at the foot of Mount Fuji, Japan's highest peak, on Monday to pray for the safety of climbers before its trails open in July.

About 30 people, including officials from mountain lodges, the local government and police, attended the event on Monday in Yamanashi Prefecture's Fujiyoshida City. It took place in front of a cenotaph near the Yoshida route leading to the peak that is dedicated to climbers who died on the mountain.

A priest from a local shrine began the ceremony by carrying out a ritual. Participants then prayed for the safety of climbers and the souls of the victims.

Organizers say that from 1956 until last month 325 climbers died on Mount Fuji's Yamanashi side from causes that included slipping off trails.

The Yamanashi side's Yoshida route will open from July 1 through September 10.

Local officials expect the number of climbers to rise this season as this year marks 10 years since Mount Fuji's registration on UNESCO's World Heritage list. The lifting of restrictions on people's movements that were imposed due to COVID-19 is also expected to push up the number.

The officials are concerned that the number of accidents may increase as well.

Nakamura Osamu, the head of an association of local accommodation facility operators, said the participants prayed for a season without accidents. He also said the operators will make preparations to safely accept climbers.

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is hailing this year's Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima as a success.

Kishida, who chaired the summit, said that leaders made clear their determination to protect international order and, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's dramatic appearance, heralded their solidarity with Ukraine.

In his closing speech of the summit on Sunday, Kishida said, "I feel it is significant that we invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Japan, showed unwavering solidarity between the G7 and Ukraine, confirmed the importance of a free and open international order based on the rule of law, and strongly demonstrated to the world that we have renewed our commitment to protecting it."

During the three-day meeting, G7 leaders announced new sanctions and export controls against Russia.

They promised millions in new military aid, including the training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets.

They vowed to aim for a world without nuclear weapons, and to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan strait.

And they deepened ties with emerging nations invited to the summit, including India, which has close ties with Russia.

In a post-summit speech, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for support that would make Russia the last nation to invade another country.

He said, "Though the enemy is not using nuclear weapons, our cities that have been burned to the ground by Russian bombs and artillery look similar to what Hiroshima looked like in photos after the atomic bombing."

There was a strong reaction from Russia's foreign ministry. It says the G7 leaders' statements were brimming with "anti-Russian and anti-Chinese" language.

Russia says bringing Zelenskyy to the summit turned the meeting into a "propaganda show."

China's foreign ministry says it has summoned the Japanese ambassador over references to Beijing-related comments at the summit. It says Japan colluded with other countries in smearing and attacking China and grossly interfered in its internal affairs.

A 91-year-old atomic bomb survivor told reporters in Hiroshima on Sunday that she was disappointed there was no mention of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in the statement on the nuclear disarmament the G7 leaders released during their summit.

Setsuko Thurlow, who now lives in Canada, was about 1.8 kilometers from ground zero and was exposed to radiation from the explosion when she was 13.

For more than half a century, she has been calling for abolishing nuclear weapons around the world. She gave a speech at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony when the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, or ICAN, was awarded the prize in 2017.

Thurlow said she felt the statement "G7 Leaders' Hiroshima Vision on Nuclear Disarmament" did not mention their feelings.

She said the people of Hiroshima had hoped that the leaders would understand the significance of the summit being held in the city, visit Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and see what the people in the city went through.

Thurlow said she was surprised that the statement did not include a single word about the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons that actually exists in the international community.

She said she was also disappointed that the statement only carried things that had been discussed in the past, despite the leaders having the opportunity to meet atoic bomb survivors, visit the museum and think.

Thurlow added that she does not feel the G7 summit in Hiroshima created momentum for the people and the government to work together toward abolishing nuclear weapons.

She stressed that she hopes the leaders will not let the G7 summit end as a celebration, but keep up the momentum toward abolishing nuclear weapons.

Prospects are dim for immediate restoration in areas of Myanmar hit by a devastating cyclone a week ago.

Cyclone Mocha made landfall on May 14 in the western state of Rakhine, where the military has been pressuring minority Rohingya Muslims.

The pro-democracy National Unity Government, which opposes the country's military rulers, says the cyclone has left 435 people dead, and the figure is expected to rise.

Takagi Noriko, who heads the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Myanmar, spoke to NHK on Saturday.

Takagi said her office has been gradually providing aid. But she said it has not been able to help all the people affected, as the staff cannot visit the cyclone-hit areas to investigate the situation.

She said she met military officials in the capital Naypyitaw on Tuesday to ask for permission to enter the affected areas, but has not yet received approval.

Takagi said her office had stockpiled supplies before the cyclone, and is ready to distribute them.

She said the lives of the affected people will become worse as aid is delayed, and that her office wants to get access to the affected areas as soon as possible.

China has required domestic operators of critical information infrastructure to stop procuring from major US chipmaker Micron Technology. The move is seen as a countermeasure against tightened US controls on semiconductor-related exports to the country.

China's cyberspace regulator announced the requirement on Sunday, saying it found serious network security risks in Micron's products.

The regulator says the products pose significant security risks to China's critical information infrastructure supply chain, affecting the country's national security.

About 3.3 billion dollars' worth of the company's products were sold in China last year, accounting for 10 percent of the firm's overall sales.

A team of South Korean experts will start a four-day survey on Monday to check the safety of Japan's plan to release treated and diluted water from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea.

The treated water will be diluted to reduce tritium levels before it is released into the ocean. Its tritium concentration will be lowered to one-seventh of the World Health Organzation's standards for drinking water.

Japan and South Korea agreed at a meeting in early May to have South Korea send experts on nuclear plants and the marine environment for an on-site survey.

The 21-member team led by Yoo Guk-hee, the chief of South Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, left Incheon Airport on Sunday for a six-day stay in Japan.

Before their departure, Yoo told reporters that the team will use scientific methods to check on the plan.

He also noted that the team will communicate its findings to the South Korean people. He stressed that by using a scientific, meticulous approach, the team can earn the trust of the public.

The experts will assess the results of analysis on water treated by the Advanced Liquid Processing System, or ALPS, during their visit. They will also examine how treated water is stored and managed.

South Korea has banned fisheries products from Fukushima and several other prefectures due to safety concerns over radioactive contamination.

Tokyo's Asakusa district is crowded with people to witness a traditional festival being staged close to its original form for the first time in four years.

The Sanja Matsuri is a centuries-old festival that heralds the arrival of summer. The three-day event reached its peak on Sunday, with a procession of "mikoshi," or portable shrines.

Three floats were brought out from Asakusa Shrine early in the morning. Parishioners then paraded them through the streets of Asakusa.

It is the first time the procession has been staged in its full form since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

A man there to watch the parade said he's glad that excitement has returned to Asakusa.

A woman among the "mikoshi" bearers said she enjoyed carrying the portable shrine for the first time in four years.
