Trump found guilty, sentencing set for July 11

Donald Trump has become the first-ever former US president to be convicted of a crime. A New York jury found him guilty on all 34 counts related to hush money paid to an adult film star ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Prosecutors say Trump led a conspiracy to influence the outcome of the race. They say he covered up a 130,000-dollar payment to buy actor Stormy Daniels' silence about a sexual encounter.

After weeks of hearings and two days of deliberations, a 12-person jury agreed with their arguments.

Trump maintains he is innocent, and claims the outcome of the court case was politically-motivated. "Our whole country is being rigged right now. This was done by the Biden administration in order to wound or hurt an opponent, a political opponent," he said.

Trump could face from probation to four years in prison per count. His sentencing date is set for July 11th -- just days before the Republican national convention kicks off in Wisconsin, where he's expected to win the nomination.

Trump said: "The real verdict is going to be November 5th by the people. And they know what happened here and everybody knows what happened here."

Under the US Constitution, Trump's conviction does not prevent him from running in the presidential election. He is also expected to appeal the verdict, a process which could take months.

Outside the courtroom, reactions were split between Trump's critics and his supporters.

US President Joe Biden weighed-in on social media, posting, "There's only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: At the ballot box."

US public broadcaster PBS surveyed people about how the conviction would affect their vote. Seventeen percent said they are "less likely to vote for Trump" while 15 percent said they are "more likely."

Some political analysts also say many in the US already have entrenched opinions about Trump. They say the verdict will not have a significant impact on who people choose to vote for on election day.

North Korea says it conducted 'demonstration firing of super-large artillery'

North Korea says it has conducted a demonstration firing involving super-large multiple rocket launchers. The announcement comes a day after the country reportedly launched ballistic missiles.

North Korea's ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported this on Friday. It says the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, supervised the firing of the 600- millimeter rocket artillery.

A photo shows 18 missiles being fired simultaneously from mobile launchers.

The report says artillerymen hit an island target 365 kilometers away. South Korean media say a major air base in the South would be within the missiles' range.

The North claims that the missiles are capable of carrying nuclear warheads. It says the demonstration was conducted to show the country will not to hesitate to carry out a preemptive attack against South Korea.

Kim reportedly said his country's nuclear forces should be more thoroughly prepared to promptly and correctly perform the important mission of deterring a war and taking the initiative in the war.

The South Korean military said the North launched more than 10 projectiles believed to be short-range ballistic missiles from the Sunan area near Pyongyang on Thursday.

The US Department of State said in a statement on Thursday that the United States condemns North Korea "in the strongest possible terms," adding that the launches were in direct violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions.

It said the launches serve as a reminder of the need for all countries to fully implement North Korea-related UN Security Council resolutions that prohibit Pyongyang from acquiring technologies and materials to advance its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs. The comment apparently has Russia in mind, as Moscow is stepping up its military cooperation with Pyongyang.

US media: Biden allowing Ukraine to attack some areas in Russia with US weapons

Major US media outlets say President Joe Biden has given Ukraine permission to use US-supplied weapons to strike some limited areas inside Russia. This is an apparent shift in US policy. The Biden administration had only allowed Kyiv to use US-supplied weapons to fight against Russia inside Ukraine.

Political news website Politico and other outlets quoted US government sources in news reports that they issued on Thursday.

They quoted one of the officials as saying that the president recently directed his team to ensure that Ukraine can use US weapons for counter-fire purposes in Kharkiv, so Ukraine can hit back at Russian forces hitting them or preparing to hit them.

The reports indicate that Biden's decision applies only to targets over the border close to the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv. They suggested that Ukraine can now use US-provided arms, such as rockets and rocket launchers, to target Russian missiles heading toward Kharkiv, Russian troops amassing on the border close to Kharkiv or Russian bombers launching bombs toward Ukrainian territory.

The US administration is reportedly not allowing Ukraine to use long-range missiles to attack deep inside Russia.

The shift in policy was apparently made in response to the recent intensification of Russia's offensive. Earlier this month, Russia's troops crossed the border near Kharkiv and took control of dozens of settlements near the border.

Israel seizes control of border area between Gaza, Egypt

The Israeli military says it has captured a border area between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. This comes amid Israel's continued military operation in southern parts of the enclave.

An Israeli military spokesperson said on Wednesday that Israeli forces had taken "operational control" of the Philadelphi Corridor. He added that about 20 tunnels had been discovered there.

Israel says the area was used to smuggle weapons and other goods from Egypt to Gaza. Israel had controlled the roughly 14-kilometer-long corridor until 2005.

Egyptian media quoted a high-ranking Egyptian official as denying the presence of tunnels in the area.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces continued their attacks on Rafah, where many people are taking shelter.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said on Wednesday that two of its staff were killed when an ambulance carrying them was struck by the Israeli military in western Rafah.

The Israeli military also resumed fighting Hamas combatants in northern Gaza, an area it said earlier that its troops had taken control of.

A senior Israeli government official said on Wednesday that the fighting in Gaza is expected to continue for another seven months to destroy the military and governing capabilities of Hamas.

Health authorities in Gaza said on Wednesday that the death toll in the enclave since the start of the conflict had climbed to 36,171.

US firm OpenAI: Russia, China groups use AI for influence operations

US tech firm OpenAI says it identified five groups, based in various countries, that have been using its technology in attempts to manipulate public opinion. The firm developed the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT.

OpenAI on Thursday reported the latest trends in covert influence operations. It said five groups, based in Russia, China, Iran and Israel, used generative AI for a range of tasks, such as making up names and bios for social media accounts, creating comments and translating texts.

The content posted by the groups focused on a wide range of issues, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the conflict between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and politics in the United States.

The firm said a group based in China generated texts in English, Japanese and other languages that criticized Japan's release of treated and diluted water from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean. The texts were posted on online platforms.

The report points out the risk of influence operations by generative AI ahead of the US presidential election and other events.

Japanese author of 'Totto-chan' attends China event to mark sequel publication

The Japanese writer of a memoir that became a bestseller in China has expressed hope that her book will foster mutual understanding between people of both countries.

Actor and TV personality Kuroyanagi Tetsuko attended an event in Beijing on Thursday to commemorate the publication in China earlier this month of a Chinese version of a sequel to "Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window."

The original autobiography first came out in Japan in 1981. It tells of Kuroyanagi's memories of her life at a Tokyo school, to which she transferred as a first grader.

Roughly 26 million copies of the book have been printed, with 65 percent of them published in China. The story also appeared as a textbook material in the country.

The 90-year-old author said she penned what she found interesting and that the content may have reverberated more among Chinese than among Japanese.

She added she was surprised that the Chinese sequel hit bookstores less than eight months after its Japanese version became available.

A Chinese reader told the author that her book has taught reading is fun. Another said reading "Totto-chan" was a life-changing experience.

South Korea discusses how to respond to North's missile launches

South Korea's presidential office has convened a meeting to discuss North Korea's latest launches of what appeared to be short-range ballistic missiles. Pyongyang also apparently tried to jam GPS signals.

Members of the presidential National Security Office and other officials met on Thursday morning to analyze the situation and discussed how to respond.

The South Korean military says North Korea fired more than 10 projectiles believed to be short-range ballistic missiles from the Sunan area near Pyongyang around 6:14 a.m. on Thursday.

The presumed missiles reportedly flew toward the Sea of Japan. At least one of the projectiles is believed to have traveled more than 350 kilometers.

Yonhap news agency reports that they appeared to be short-range missiles that the North calls "super-large rocket shells."

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the military also detected an attempt by North Korea to jam GPS signals on Thursday morning.

The jamming attempt reportedly originated from the north side of the Northern Limit Line, the de-fact inter-Korean sea border in the Yellow Sea.

The military said similar jamming attacks were detected on Wednesday as well. It said there was no impact on South Korea's forces. But local media reported some civilian ships experienced problems with using GPS.

Earlier on Monday, North Korea failed to launch what it calls a military reconnaissance satellite.
On Tuesday, the North started sending a large number of balloons filled with trash and excrement over the border to the South.

The South Korean military says it remains vigilant against possible further provocations by the North.

Japan: N.Korean ballistic missiles fall outside EEZ

The Japanese Defense Ministry says North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles on Thursday morning. All are believed to have fallen outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone, with no reports of damage to ships or aircraft.

The ministry says the launch happened around 6:13 a.m. At least one of the ballistic missiles reached a maximum altitude of around 100 kilometers and flew a distance of more than 350 kilometers.

All of them appeared to splash down off the Korean Peninsula's eastern coast.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio says his government is gathering information and monitoring the situation.

Kishida said: "North Korea's launching of ballistic missiles violates UN Security Council resolutions. Japan strongly condemns its actions. We have already lodged a protest."

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says it believes the North fired more than 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan.

It says they were launched from Sunan, home to an international airport that serves the capital, Pyongyang.

Seoul says it is closely sharing information with the US and Japan and conducting a detailed analysis.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reports the launch may have involved North Korea's so-called "super-large rocket launcher," based on flight distance.

It is North Korea's seventh ballistic missile launch so far this year. It also comes after Pyongyang's failed attempt at putting a satellite into orbit on Monday using ballistic missile technology.

The United Nations Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting Friday to discuss a response to the satellite launch, at the request of Japan, the US and South Korea.

North Korea says it opposes the meeting, claiming the launch is justified under its right for self-defense.

In a statement issued through its state-run news agency, Pyongyang says preserving "the spirit of sovereign equality" is a fundamental issue for the global community.

China to send two giant pandas to Washington zoo

A national zoo in Washington says China will send it two giant pandas by the end of the year.

The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute announced on Wednesday that the zoo will welcome a pair of 2-year-old male and female pandas.

The zoo says the male panda, Bao Li, is the grandson of a pair that was returned to China last year after living at the zoo for more than 20 years.

China's ambassador to the US, Xie Feng, said at the zoo's news conference that he is "very glad" to share the news of the "envoys of friendship" flying over the Pacific to deepen the friendly ties between the Chinese and American peoples.

First lady Jill Biden said in a video, "We can't wait to celebrate this historic moment...the pandas are coming back to DC."

In recent years, US zoos have been sending back pandas to China as loan agreements lapsed and were not renewed amid tensions between the two countries. A zoo in the state of Georgia is currently the only one with pandas after the Washington zoo sent back three pandas last November.

US media are reporting that the latest announcement follows increased engagement between Washington and Beijing that has put ties on a steadier footing.

Jury deliberations begin in Trump's hush money trial

After more than a month of testimony in a courtroom in New York, jury deliberations in former US President Donald Trump's hush money trial began on Wednesday. Prosecutors argued that Trump orchestrated a conspiracy to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. The 12 jurors are now weighing a verdict in the first criminal trial of someone to have served in the Oval Office.

Trump is charged with falsifying business records related to a hush money payment ahead of the election to adult film star Stormy Daniels to stay quiet about a sexual relationship. Prosecutors called 20 witnesses, including his former lawyer, Michael Cohen. They alleged Trump reimbursed him for making the payment, then recorded those transfers as legal fees.

The defense called Cohen a "liar" who cannot be trusted.

Trump said, "These charges are rigged. The whole thing is rigged."

The jurors spent the day deliberating behind closed doors but did not reach a verdict. They were dismissed and will continue on Thursday. The deliberations can take days, or even weeks.

The judge could choose to sentence Trump to probation; however, each of the 34 counts carries the possibility of up to four years in prison.

Kishida meets senior Chinese Communist Party diplomatic official

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has met with a high-ranking official of the Chinese Communist Party. Kishida expressed his desire to make progress toward resolving pending issues and concerns through dialogue.

Kishida received a courtesy call by Liu Jianchao, the head of the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee, on Wednesday.

Liu is now visiting Japan at the invitation of the country's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner Komeito. He is viewed as an important figure who may assume a key role in Chinese diplomacy in the near future.

During the meeting, Kishida said he hopes to accelerate cooperation in areas in which they work together and to resolve pending issues through dialogue, in line with the broader goal of expanding common interests under the "mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests."

In response, Liu referred to the importance of bilateral dialogue and expressed his commitment to enhancing it.

Kishida also stressed the importance of inter-party exchanges for the development of Japan-China relations.

Liu replied that he hopes to further promote exchanges in various areas, including between political parties.

The International Department of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee says Liu told Kishida that maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait is in the common interest of the two countries and Japan should abide by Beijing's "one-China principle."

Liu also reportedly referred to the discharge of treated and diluted water from Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean.

He described the water as "nuclear contaminated" and said such sensitive issues should be properly addressed.

The nuclear power plant suffered a triple meltdown during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Water used to cool molten fuel at the plant has been mixing with rain and groundwater. The accumulated water is being treated to remove most radioactive substances, but still contains tritium.
Before releasing the treated water into the ocean, the plant's operator dilutes it to reduce tritium levels to about one-seventh of the World Health Organization's guidance level for drinking water.

Kim acknowledges failure of military spy satellite launch

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has acknowledged for the first time that Pyongyang's fourth launch of a military reconnaissance satellite failed on Monday.

North Korea's ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on Wednesday that Kim delivered a speech at the Academy of Defense Science on Tuesday. The academy develops military spy satellites.

Kim reportedly noted that a rocket carrying the military reconnaissance satellite had exploded in midair. He said a self-destruct system had activated, due to an abnormality in the first-stage engine.

Kim asserted that North Korea's possession of military reconnaissance satellites is justified, as the nation must counter US military maneuvers and provocative acts.

He said the satellites are needed to further strengthen North Korea's defense and deterrence capabilities, as well as to protect the country's sovereignty from potential threats.

He went on to say that although Monday's launch did not achieve the desired result, North Korea will not be frightened by the failure. He said the nation will instead make a greater effort.

He encouraged the scientists and technicians by telling them that failure is a prerequisite for success.

North Korea has announced that it plans to launch three military spy satellites this year. The country's scientists are expected to investigate the cause of the failure and to carefully consider the timing of the fifth launch.

North Korea sending balloons carrying trash to South Korea

The South Korean military says North Korea has flown large numbers of balloons carrying objects, including trash and waste, into South Korea. The move appears to be in retaliation against South Korean activists' sending balloons with anti-Pyongyang leaflets the other way.

The South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Wednesday that the North has been flying the balloons toward the South since Tuesday night. They said some of the balloons have been found in Seoul and areas close to the border with North Korea.

Released photos show balloons with plastic bags attached and trash scattered on the ground. The South Korean military said trash was inside the bags. Local media said what appeared to be manure was also included in the waste.

About 200 balloons have reportedly been found so far. The military's anti-chemical and biological warfare team, as well as an explosive ordnance unit, have been mobilized to inspect and collect the objects.

Expressing worries about possible damage to airports and motorways, the South Korean military warned the North to immediately stop what it called vulgar act.

On May 10, North Korean defectors in South Korea flew balloons carrying leaflets critical of Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong Un toward the North.

In response, North Korea's vice defense minister said in a statement issued over the weekend that "mounds of wastepaper and filth" would be scattered over border areas in the South in a tit-for-tat action, adding that Seoul will learn how laborious it is to clear them.

US expresses concern over Rafah airstrike but continues military aid to Israel

A senior US government official has expressed concern over the Israeli bombing in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip that killed dozens of people, but indicated there is no change to the US policy of providing military aid to Israel.

Health officials in Gaza said the Israeli airstrike on a camp for displaced people northwest of Rafah on Sunday killed at least 45 people, including women and children. They also said a shelling on another camp in Rafah on Tuesday killed at least 21 people.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said in a news conference on Tuesday that the loss of innocent lives in Sunday's strike was "heartbreaking" and "horrific." He called on Israel to "take every precaution possible to do more to protect innocent life."

Kirby refrained from commenting on Tuesday's shelling as Israel's military has denied responsibility.

Reuters news agency and other media outlets quoted witnesses as saying Israeli tanks and armored vehicles were spotted in central Rafah at the time.

But Kirby said the US has not seen evidence of what it considers a major ground offensive.

When asked by reporters of any changes to US policy following Sunday's airstrike and ongoing ground operations, Kirby said, "I have no policy changes to speak to." He acknowledged Sunday's incident would not prompt the US to halt its military aid to Israel.

US President Joe Biden previously warned that the US would withhold weapons shipments to Israel if it conducts a full-scale ground invasion in Rafah.

US media are questioning the Biden administration's criteria for halting military aid as the number of civilian casualties continue to rise.

UN chief Guterres urges Israel to stop Rafah offensive immediately

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has demanded Israel immediately cease attacks on Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

Guterres spoke in an exclusive interview with NHK in the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda on Tuesday.

Guterres said that because of the way Israel's attacks in Gaza are being carried out, civilian casualties and the destruction of infrastructure and housing are "unprecedented" during his tenure as secretary-general. He added that the levels of destruction are unacceptable.

Guterres also talked about a recent provisional order by the International Court of Justice for Israel to immediately halt the offensive in Rafah.

Guterres said, "The message is simple. Abide by the decisions of the International Court of Justice. We are in a world where we must make sure that international law prevails, international humanitarian law prevails, the rule of law prevails and decisions of courts, universal courts are respected because they are binding." He said, "This is not an opinion. This is a decision that is binding, Israel must abide by the decision."

He called on other parties around the world to do everything to allow the release of hostages taken by Hamas, stop the destruction and killing of civilians and "create the basis for a two state solution to be implemented." The solution refers to Israel's coexistence with a future Palestinian state.

Experts: N.Korea may have used new rocket engine with Russian support

Experts in South Korea say North Korea may have used a new type of rocket engine introduced with Russian support in Monday's failed launch of what it claims was a military reconnaissance satellite.

North Korea's National Aerospace Technology Administration said early on Tuesday that a new rocket carrying a military reconnaissance satellite was launched on Monday night, but that it exploded in midair.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea's military released footage on Tuesday taken by a patrol ship west of the Korean Peninsula the night before. The video shows a flash of light over the Yellow Sea, apparently due to an explosion.

In a preliminary conclusion, North Korea's aerospace agency attributed the failed launch to a new "liquid oxygen plus petroleum" engine.

South Korean experts suggest that the new engine uses kerosene along with liquid oxygen, and that it may have been hastily adopted with Russian technical support. Pyongyang used a different type of liquid fuel in the past.

South Korean media have quoted the country's government sources as saying that many Russian engineers have visited the North, and that engine combustion tests were repeatedly staged.

Experts say Russia may provide even more active support following the latest failed launch.

Japan govt. to remain vigilant after N.Korea's failed satellite launch

The Japanese government will remain on the alert for a possible launch of a satellite by North Korea.

The North said its latest attempt on Monday to launch a military reconnaissance satellite failed after the rocket carrying it exploded during the first stage of flight.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa condemned the launch. He said, "A series of North Korean actions, including repeated missile launches, threaten the peace and security of our country, the region and the international community."

He said the launch violates relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and is a serious issue that concerns the safety of the Japanese people.

The Japanese government plans to keep taking steps to prepare for further provocations. The measures include the continued deployment of PAC-3 interceptor missile units in Okinawa Prefecture's Sakishima Islands.

The launch window notified by Pyongyang lasts through June 3. The North had also announced plans for three more military reconnaissance satellite launches this year.

Japan's Defense Ministry says it will study data from the latest launch and analyze how it could affect the North's future plans.

Senior US, Chinese diplomats assert positions on Taiwan

The US State Department has disclosed that senior US and Chinese diplomats have asserted their countries' positions on Taiwan.

The State Department issued a press release Monday announcing that China Coordinator and Deputy Assistant Secretary for China and Taiwan Mark Lambert held virtual talks with China's Director-General for Boundary and Ocean Affairs Hong Liang on May 23.

The meeting comes after Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who does not recognize the "one-China" principle, took office on May 20 and as China was carrying out military exercises near Taiwan.

The press release says the US "reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and shared deep concerns" about China's "joint military drills in the Taiwan Strait and around Taiwan."

China's Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday that the Chinese side emphasized that the "one-China" principle is the political foundation of bilateral relations. It also emphasized that the principle is a significant foundation for dialogue between both sides on maritime issues.

It said, "Taiwan independence" is the biggest threat that will destroy peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. It said the US side should immediately stop supporting and acknowledging "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.

The two diplomats also reiterated their positions when they met last November.

As the two countries remain at odds over Taiwan, the US apparently aims to continue dialogue with China and stabilize relations.

New Chinese military drone spotted above waters north of Okinawa

Japan's Defense Ministry says it has spotted a Chinese military drone flying over the East China Sea, north of Japan's Okinawa Prefecture.

The ministry is keeping a close watch as the Wing Loong-10 variant was spotted in operation for the first time.

Ministry officials said they confirmed the WL10 reconnaissance and strike drone flying east from the direction of mainland China. It then took a northeasterly course before flying back in the direction it came from, taking the same route.

Japan's Air Self-Defense Force scrambled fighter jets, and the drone didn't violate Japan's airspace.

Photos taken at the scene show a drone with streamlined features.

The ministry says it was the first time aircraft were scrambled to intercept this type of drone. It also maintains this is the fifth type of Chinese military drone it has confirmed so far.

The ministry is keeping a close watch as the Chinese military is believed to be expanding its activities near Japan.

Ukrainian, Spanish leaders sign security deal; Putin visits Uzbekistan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made an official visit to Spain on Monday and signed a bilateral security deal with his Spanish counterpart, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Under the agreement, Spain will provide 1 billion euros, or about 1.1 billion dollars, of military aid to Ukraine this year.

Sanchez said Spain will send Patriot missiles, another batch of Leopard 2 tanks and ammunition to Ukraine.

Speaking at a news conference, Zelenskyy noted that Russia uses over 3,000 guided aerial bombs against people per month.

He said Ukraine is asking the world to help by supplying it with at least additional seven Patriot air defense systems.

A Russian attack using guided bombs hit a busy commercial facility in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Saturday. The regional governor said 18 people were killed and five others are listed as missing.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a state visit to Uzbekistan and met President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on Monday.

Putin noted in a news conference after their meeting that Russia began supplying gas to Uzbekistan last October. He expressed his intention to boost bilateral energy cooperation, referring to an ongoing project to increase the capacity of a trans-border pipeline.

Observers say Putin is apparently highlighting Russia's friendly ties with the former Soviet republic at a time when other former republics such as Moldova and Armenia are increasingly distancing themselves from Moscow.

WHO's annual assembly opens amid divides over pandemic treaty

Member states of the World Health Organization are discussing global medical and health issues at its annual assembly in Switzerland.

The assembly kicked off in Geneva on Monday, with officials from 194 member states in attendance.

One of the major items on the agenda is revising the International Health Regulations, which provide a framework that defines countries' obligations in handling emergencies that have the potential to cross borders.

The focus is also on whether the meeting could lead to the adoption of a pandemic treaty aimed at strengthening global preparedness for future pandemics.

The idea of a pandemic treaty was floated in light of the divide experienced by countries fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed pact includes measures to support developing countries.

Negotiators tried to reach a deal on a pandemic treaty before the WHO assembly. But they failed to do so, as developing and advanced countries remained split over vaccine distribution and other issues after two years of negotiations.

Officials at the assembly are expected to discuss how to continue with the negotiations in order to pave the way for a possible deal.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he remains confident that member countries will be able to reach a consensus on the accord. He said this is because "where there is a will, there is a way."

North Korea plans to launch 'satellite'

The Japan Coast Guard says it has been informed by North Korea of its plan to launch what it calls an artificial satellite sometime between May 27 and June 3.

The projectile will likely fall in one of three areas -- two locations in the Yellow Sea southwest of North Korea and one in the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines. All of them are outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone.

Officials are urging vessels operating in the waters to be on the alert for any falling objects.

The Japanese government's task force at the prime minister's office is collecting and analyzing information.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has instructed relevant ministries and agencies to provide people with information appropriately through thorough gathering and analysis of intelligence.

He said Japan will work closely with the United States and South Korea, and strongly urge Pyongyang to exercise self-restraint.

Kishida instructed government agencies to take all possible measures to prepare for any type of event.

Leaders of Japan, China, South Korea adopt joint declaration

South Korea's president says he and the leaders of Japan and China have adopted a joint declaration that includes their pledge to work closely together to achieve regional peace and prosperity.

Yoon Suk-yeol made the announcement during a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Chinese Premier Li Qiang, which was held after their talks on Monday.

The summit involving the three countries was held for the first time in nearly four-and-a-half years.

Yoon told reporters that the foundation of cooperation among the three countries is mutual understanding and trust, and their leaders must meet frequently to communicate with each other.

Yoon said the three leaders agreed to make the trade and investment environment transparent and predictable and to establish a secure supply chain.

He said the three countries will also cooperate to tackle environmental and other issues.

Yoon also referred to a plan by North Korea to launch what Pyongyang calls an artificial satellite sometime between May 27 and June 3. He said such a launch is a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and the international community must respond firmly to it.

Tel Aviv targeted by Hamas rocket attack as Israel continues Rafah offensive

Tel Aviv has come under a Hamas rocket attack as Israel continues its offensive in Rafah, southern Gaza. The Israeli media say Tel Aviv was targeted for the first time since January.

Hamas said on Sunday it bombarded Tel Aviv with a rocket barrage.

This comes as the Israeli military continues its operation in Rafah. The International Court of Justice had ordered Israel to immediately halt the attack in the area as a provisional measure.

The Israeli military said it eliminated "terrorist operatives" who attempted to attack its troops in Rafah. It also said the soldiers found large quantities of weapons, such as rifles.

Gaza's health officials say 35 people, most of them women and children, were killed in Israeli bombing on a camp for displaced people northwest of Rafah on Sunday evening.

CNN quoted an Egyptian official as saying negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a ceasefire and hostage swap deal will resume on Tuesday in Cairo, Egypt.

But the outlook for any agreement remains unclear as there is a wide gap between the two sides.

Okinawa's Shuri Castle holds safety ritual as restoration continues after fire

A traditional ceremony has been held to pray for safety for the ongoing reconstruction of Shuri Castle in Okinawa, southern Japan. The main hall and other buildings were destroyed in a blaze in 2019.

About 80 people, including carpenters, took part in the ritual on Monday after part of the roof was completed.

The participants checked the direction and position of the main hall, and lifted a ridge beam with a rope.

They chanted prayers as the timber was knocked into place with a hammer.

Master carpenter Kondo Katsuaki said he is happy to mark a turning point in the restoration of the building.

Okumura Koji, who oversaw the roof work, said the restoration of the castle will take two-and-a-half more years, and he is determined to keep moving forward.

The installation of the roof tiles is expected to begin this summer.

Carpenters completed the framework of the main hall at the end of last year. The rebuilding of the main hall is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2026.

The original Shuri Castle was built about 500 years ago. It was destroyed during World War Two. The main hall and other buildings were reconstructed decades later. In 2000, the ruins of the original castle were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Japan Prime Minister Kishida to visit Seoul for 3-way summit with China, S.Korea

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio departs for Seoul on Sunday to meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. It will be the first summit of the three countries' leaders in four and a half years. Arrangements are also underway to realize a bilateral meeting between Kishida and Li.

The three leaders will hold the summit in the South Korean capital on Monday. They appear likely to confirm the further facilitation of human exchanges through intercollegiate interactions and tourism. They may also designate 2025 and 2026 as years of cultural exchanges.

The leaders are expected to compile a joint declaration that summarizes their talks, such as cooperation in the economic and trade sectors.

Ahead of the summit, Kishida is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Yoon on Sunday. They will likely agree to have closer communications between their leaders and ministers.

The two leaders are also expected to seek enhanced collaboration in dealing with North Korea, which has been stepping up its nuclear and missile development.

Kishida is also arranging a bilateral meeting with Li. The Japanese prime minister appears eager to reaffirm their intention to promote a "mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests."

Kishida will likely seek an immediate removal of China's suspension of Japanese seafood imports, and outline his government's positions on other outstanding bilateral issues.

Kishida is also expected to call on China to peacefully resolve issues related to Taiwan through dialogue. China began military drills around Taiwan on Thursday.

Kishida will return to Tokyo on Monday.

G7 finance chiefs express concerns about China's industrial overcapacity

The finance chiefs and central bank governors of the Group of Seven countries have expressed concerns about China's industrial overcapacity.

Beijing is being accused of overproducing electric vehicles and other products to sell them overseas at unfairly low prices.

The G7 officials released a joint communique after wrapping up two days of talks in Stresa, northern Italy, on Saturday.

The statement says, "We express concerns about China's comprehensive use of non-market policies and practices that undermines our workers, industries, and economic resilience."

The statement further says that the officials will "consider taking steps to ensure a level playing field, in line with World Trade Organization principles."

The participants also discussed the idea of supporting Ukraine by using profits from Russian assets that have been frozen as part of sanctions over Moscow's invasion of the country.

The statement says the officials intend to present options to their leaders ahead of the G7 summit next month.

Japan's Finance Minister Suzuki Shunichi spoke to reporters. He said Tokyo's basic position is that international law must be obeyed, as far as the use of profits from Russia's assets are concerned, because Moscow is being condemned for its violations of international law.

The G7 officials remain split on how to handle the Russian assets. It remains to be seen to what extent they will be able to narrow the gap by the G7 summit.

Russian strike on commercial facility kills 11 in Kharkiv

At least 11 people have reportedly been killed in a Russian attack on a busy commercial facility in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

The governor of the Kharkiv region said many others were also injured in an attack using guided bombs on Saturday. Some people remain unaccounted for. Rescue operations are underway.

Eighteen people were also reportedly injured in another strike on a residential area in the regional capital.

The regional prosecutor's office posted footage on social media showing black smoke rising from the commercial facility. The structure was partially reduced to a skeleton.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said more than 200 people could have been at the site when it was struck in the daytime on Saturday.

Russia has recently been launching an offensive in the northern part of Kharkiv across the border. The regional capital Kharkiv has also come under missile attacks.

Zelenskyy said on social media that the lives of ordinary citizens have been targeted.

He added, only such madmen as Russian President Vladimir Putin are capable of killing and terrorizing people in such a vile way.

Israel continues attacks in Rafah despite ICJ order for immediate halt

Israeli forces continued to launch attacks in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip even after the International Court of Justice ordered the country to immediately halt its military offensive there.

Israel announced where it had staged military operations in Gaza on Friday. That was the same day the court in The Hague handed down the provisional measure.

Israel said its troops had broken up a terrorist cell in Rafah, and eliminated dozens of fighters in Jabalia in northern Gaza.

Meanwhile, health officials in Gaza said on Saturday that they had confirmed 46 fatalities in the enclave over the past 24 hours. They said the death toll in Gaza since the start of the Israeli onslaught on October 7 had climbed to 35,903.

Some media outlets quote officials as saying gridlocked negotiations for a pause in the fighting, and the release of remaining hostages held in Gaza, are expected to resume in the coming days.

Reuters news agency quotes an official as saying the decision to restart the talks came after the head of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency met with the chief of the CIA and the prime minister of Qatar.

The source added that the negotiations would "open based on new proposals led by the mediators, Egypt and Qatar," and with active US involvement.

Israel and Hamas have honored a pause in their fighting only once since the conflict started on October 7. That lasted for seven days from late November. But both sides have since remained at odds, hindering an agreement on another pause.

It remains unclear whether the deadlock can be broken, even if negotiations resume.

Google's AI search feature gives false information

A new generative artificial intelligence search feature created by Google is said to have given inaccurate answers to questions, according to some US media outlets.

AI Overview was rolled out on May 14 in the United States. It gives answers to sentence-based questions.

The New York Times reported that it instructed some users to mix non-toxic glue into their pizza sauce, when asked how to prevent the cheese from sliding off.

The newspaper also said that AI Overview provided other erratic answers. It apparently stated that former US President Barack Obama is Muslim. He is actually Christian.

Other media outlets have issued reports about a user who asked AI Overview if gasoline can be used to cook spaghetti faster. The search feature said that gasoline cannot be used to cook spaghetti faster, but that it can make spaghetti spicy.

Google told NHK that many of the questions were "uncommon queries." The firm also said, "We appreciate the feedback."

The company's spokesperson added, "We're taking swift action where appropriate under our content policies, and using these examples to develop broader improvements to our systems."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is from Gujarat. He wrote on social media that he is "extremely distressed" by the fire mishap. He also said, "My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones."

Modi added that local administrators are working to provide all kinds of assistance to those affected.

Police and firefighters are trying to rescue people trapped under the rubble. They are also looking into the cause of the fire.

Local media outlets say the Gujarat government has ordered all gaming zones in the state to suspend operations until officials determine whether they have fire safety measures in place.

Japan, S.Korea defense ministers expected to discuss resuming exchanges

Defense ministers of Japan and South Korea are expected to discuss resuming exchanges between Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the South Korean military.

Japanese government sources say that coordination is underway for a meeting between Japan's Defense Minister Kihara Minoru and his South Korean counterpart Shin Won-sik on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue, which will start on May 31 in Singapore.

Exchanges between the SDF and the South Korean military have been suspended following a radar incident in 2018.

The Japanese government says a South Korean Navy destroyer directed fire-control radar at an SDF patrol aircraft over the Sea of Japan. But South Korea says its ship did not aim radar at the plane.

As bilateral relations have improved, Japanese and South Korean defense ministers agreed last year to accelerate talks on issues including measures to prevent such incidents.

Kihara and Shin are not expected to have in-depth discussions over the radar incident, as the two sides remain apart on the issue, but instead are likely to focus on measures to prevent a recurrence based on international standards.

The ministers are also expected to discuss the resumption of joint exercises and exchanges.

If they reach an agreement, Japan and South Korea are expected to move ahead toward strengthening bilateral security cooperation, including responses to North Korea, which is pushing forward its nuclear and missile development programs.

N.Korea to weigh key policies at plenary meeting of Central Committee in June

North Korea says it will hold a plenary meeting of the ruling Workers' Party Central Committee late next month to discuss the country's key policies.

The party's newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on Saturday that the decision was made during a meeting of the Political Bureau of the party the previous day, with leader Kim Jong Un in attendance.

The plenary meeting of the Central Committee will be the first since last December. It will reportedly be held to "conduct an interim review of the work in the first half of this year and discuss and decide a series of important issues, in order to successfully implement this year's orientation of state affairs."

Decisions concerning diplomatic relations with the United States ahead of the presidential election in November will be a main focus of attention. Military policies based on the five-year defense plan, which has entered its fourth year, is another high priority.

Meanwhile, participants at Friday's meeting reportedly presented immediate tasks for the North Korean armed forces to credibly defend the national sovereignty and security, and underlined the need to responsibly carry them out.

A South Korean military official said on Friday that they had detected suspected signs that the North is preparing to launch a military spy satellite at a launching station in Tongchang-ri. Relevant countries are stepping up their monitoring.

WHO members miss deadline for agreement on pandemic treaty

Member states of the World Health Organization have failed to meet a deadline on consensus for a global treaty to fight future pandemics in time. They plan to discuss measures going forward at the WHO general assembly that starts in Switzerland next week.

The WHO members began talks two years ago based on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. Negotiators had discussed ways to strengthen global anti-infection measures to prevent the spread of new viruses.

But negotiations ended on Friday without adopting a document.

The sticking points included the transfer of technologies and the sharing of information about pathogens.

Developing countries demanded the distribution of vaccines, but developed nations expressed concerns about the impact that could have on their pharmaceutical firms.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for continued negotiations, saying, "We need to use the World Health Assembly to re-energize us and finish the job at hand, which is to present the world with a generational pandemic agreement."

He added, "The world still needs a pandemic treaty."

UK passes bill to exonerate, compensate postal workers

Britain's Parliament has passed a bill to exonerate and compensate all Post Office workers wrongly convicted due to a flawed accounting system.

The software was provided by a subsidiary of Japanese firm Fujitsu.

Lawmakers passed the bill late Thursday, with royal assent expected Friday.

More than 900 post office managers and other employees were wrongly prosecuted between 1999 and 2015 after the faulty software showed money had gone missing.

A British court has already exonerated more than 100 of those who had been prosecuted after recognizing that the software was defective in 2019.

The new bill will clear the rest, and entitle the victims to 600,000 pounds, or about 764,000 dollars, in compensation.

Post Office branch managers who were not found guilty but suffered losses or experienced other trouble will receive 75,000 pounds, or 95,500 dollars.

In January, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described the scandal as one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in the country's history.

Defense chiefs of US, China to meet during security conference in Singapore

The US Defense Department says Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is planning to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Dong Jun, during a major security conference in Singapore.

The Pentagon said in a statement on Friday that the meeting is slated to take place on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue, which will start on May 31.

It will be the first in-person meeting between US and Chinese defense chiefs since November 2022. Austin and Dong held a video call last month.

The move comes as US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to resume dialogue between the two countries' top defense officials during their summit last November.

Austin and Dong are expected to discuss Taiwan and the South China Sea during their meeting. Beijing is stepping up pressure on Taiwan through military drills in areas surrounding Taiwan, and is continuing its assertive behavior in the South China Sea, including firing water cannons at Philippine vessels.

The Pentagon also said Austin is slated to participate in a trilateral meeting with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts, Kihara Minoru and Shin Won-sik.

The Defense Department stressed that it will continue to strengthen US relationships with allies and partners in support of a shared regional vision for peace, stability and deterrence.

China keeps pressure on Taiwan with 2nd day of military drills

Taiwan says it detected a total of 62 Chinese military aircraft during a second day of drills by Beijing in areas surrounding Taiwan on Friday.

China's Eastern Theater Command announced on Thursday that a two-day exercise would take place through Friday around Taiwan, the Kinmen Islands and other areas.

Taiwan's defense ministry said that from after 7 a.m. through 9:40 p.m. on Friday, it detected 62 Chinese military aircraft including H-6 bombers and KJ-500 early warning and control aircraft, as well as Chinese military and coast guard vessels.

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian said on Friday that every time "Taiwan independence" separatist forces provoke China, Beijing will push its countermeasures one step further, until the complete unification of the motherland is achieved.

The comment is believed to be a strong warning to the administration of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, which does not recognize the "one-China" principle.

The Chinese military has yet to announce whether the drills have ended, but observers say Beijing will continue to step up pressure on the Lai administration through military activities.

Rally held in Taiwan against opposition's plan for parliamentary reforms

More than 100,000 people rallied in Taiwan on Friday against a set of parliamentary reforms proposed by the opposition.

The largest opposition Kuomintang party and the second-largest Taiwan People's Party are leading deliberations on the legislation.

The protesters accuse the bloc of trying to unjustly expand its authority.

The proposed reforms include amendments to the criminal code.

One revision requires the president to make regular reports and face questions from lawmakers.

The ruling party is resisting the legislation, and voting on each article has been slow.

Even if the legislation is passed, the Executive Yuan, or Cabinet, can call for a second round of deliberations or a constitutional review.

Civic groups plan to hold another rally on the sidelines of a plenary session scheduled for Tuesday.
