The US presidential election remains too close to call in a handful of states, but Democrat Joe Biden's chances of victory appear to be growing. He's taken the lead in Pennsylvania. Incumbent Donald Trump vows to challenge the results.
If Biden does win Pennsylvania, he'll have more than the 270 electoral votes needed to take the White House. He has surpassed Trump in Georgia too, but the margin is very small. Local officials expect a recount.
Biden also keeps the lead in Nevada and Arizona.
The president is ahead in North Carolina and Alaska.
In his first public appearance since election night, Trump called the vote rigged, but gave no evidence of any fraud.
He lashed out at election officials, the media and his opponents -- suggesting, but not proving, wrongdoing.
Trump said, "If you count legal votes, I easily win. We were winning in all the key locations by a lot actually and then our numbers started miraculously getting whittled away in secret."
Major TV networks cut away from the White House news conference due to Trump's baseless claims. He's threatening to take his fight to the Supreme Court, although that could be a lengthy process.
Trump said, "A lot of litigation... because we have, so much evidence, so much proof, and it's going to end up perhaps at the highest court in the land."
Trump's campaign officials have launched legal challenges in some closely fought states. But cases in Michigan and Georgia have already been tossed out.
His family is also weighing in. Donald Trump Jr. fired off a tweet saying it would be best if the president waged "total war over the election." Twitter flagged the post as disputed or misleading.
Biden set a much different tone at a news conference earlier on Thursday, describing the vote as sacred.
Biden said, "We have no doubt that when the count is finished, Senator Harris and I will be declared the winners. So, I ask everyone to stay calm, all the people to stay calm. The process is working. The count is being completed, and we will know very soon. So, thank you all for your patience, but we've got to count the votes."
People have been taking to the streets as counting continues. Trump's supporters want the process stopped. Biden's are urging officials to count every vote.
There have been no reports of major violence, but election officials are concerned about safety.

In the US presidential election, Democratic challenger Joe Biden is now leading incumbent Republican Donald Trump in the states of Pennsylvania and Georgia.
As vote-counting enters its third day, Former Vice President Biden has a 253-to-214 lead in the state-by-state Electoral College vote that determines the election's winner, nearing the 270 votes needed to take victory.
In addition to Pennsylvania and Georgia, Biden has kept his lead in Arizona and Nevada. That means he is now ahead in four of the remaining six undecided states, edging closer to the presidency.
But the difference between the two candidates in all four states remains very small.
In a speech in his home state of Delaware on Friday, Biden said, "We are going to win this race with a clear majority. Your vote will be counted. People will be heard."
Meanwhile, Trump says he will continue to pursue legal action. He wrote on Twitter, "Legal proceedings are just now beginning!"

US media say President Donald Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, has tested positive for the coronavirus.
Multiple media outlets in the United States reported the news on Friday.
It is unknown when the chief of staff was diagnosed with the coronavirus as the White House has not made any official announcement.
Trump was hospitalized last month after he was found infected with the virus.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany and the president's close aide Hope Hicks also tested positive.
Concerns are growing over a possible resurgence of the virus among White House officials as Meadows has come into contact with a number of staffers.
Earlier this week, the US reported more than 100,000 coronavirus infections in a single day for the first time.

The European Union has imposed sanctions on the leader of Belarus and 14 other government officials over the country's crackdown on protesters following the disputed presidential election in August.
The EU said on Friday that President Alexander Lukashenko had been added to the sanctions list along with his son, who serves as national security adviser.
The move freezes the assets of listed individuals and bans them from traveling to EU countries.
The EU has already slapped similar sanctions on more than 40 senior Belarusian officials.
The Belarusian foreign ministry says it is considering countermeasures.
Protests have been continuing in Belarus with demonstrators calling for Lukashenko's resignation, as they allege the August poll was rigged. Russian-backed Lukashenko is maintaining a hardline stance against the protesters.
The situation remains deadlocked, as a nationwide strike called by anti-government forces late last month appears not to have spread.

A job placement center and a university in Tokyo have agreed to work together to help students from abroad find jobs in Japan.
The Shinjuku Hello Work office and Sophia University reached the first agreement of its kind in the country. About 1,500 foreign students are studying at the university.
The office and the university will survey the students on their hopes for employment in Japan, and try to help them secure jobs upon graduation.
The officials will also inform the students about the rules and timing of the country's job hunt process.
Information will also be provided about internship programs and job fairs catering to foreign students.
The labor ministry plans to promote similar tie-ups with other universities.
The head of the Shinjuku Hello Work office, Nagano Yasushi, said it is increasingly difficult for foreign students to get information about jobs due to the coronavirus outbreak, and that he hopes the program will be able to offer them support.
About 280,000 foreign students were in Japan studying at colleges and other institutions as of last June.
A survey conducted in 2018 covering about 5,000 foreign students showed that about 65 percent want to be employed in Japan. But only 30 percent of foreign students who graduated in March of last year have found employment.

Tourists from Japan have started arriving in Hawaii after the US state eased quarantine requirements imposed for the coronavirus.
Hawaii says travelers who pre-test negative for COVID-19 at approved institutions are no longer required to isolate for 14-days.
The first direct flight since the new standards took effect arrived at a Honolulu Airport on Friday from Tokyo's Haneda. About 60 passengers passed immigration.
A woman who is studying in Hawaii said she took a test in Tokyo on the morning of her departure and received the results just before boarding. She said the procedure went more smoothly than she had expected.
Another woman who had come to meet her aunt said she looked forward to talking and relaxing together with her relative.
Japan's health ministry says travelers returning from Hawaii will still be required to undergo coronavirus tests. They will also be asked to stay at home or at hotels and other designated locations for two weeks.
Hawaii tourism official Mitsue Varley said passenger numbers to and from Japan were not expected to increase sharply due to the return-leg requirements and the limited number of flights. She said the recovery of tourism in Hawaii will take place gradually.

NHK has learned that Japan and China have agreed to resume round trip business travel between the two countries beginning in mid-November. It applies to both short- and long-term trips.
The government of Japan is gradually easing restrictions which it imposed to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
It has already resumed business travel with Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam.
It also lifted entry restrictions for foreigners from around the world who are qualified for mid- and long-term stays.
About 370,000 business travelers from China entered Japan in 2019, more than from any other country.
The government is hoping the move will help revitalize the economy.

NHK has learned that Japan's immigration authority will allow some foreigners who have refused deportation orders to stay with family members or supporters, outside of government facilities, if they meet certain conditions.
The Immigration Services Agency is working on a draft revision of the laws on immigration and deportation.
There is an increasing number of foreigners who rejected orders to leave Japan and are being kept in long-term detention at government facilities.
The agency is planning to allow some of these people who it deems unlikely to flee to stay with family members or supporters outside of such facilities until they leave the country.
The agency is hoping the revised law will encourage foreigners who are in the country illegally to leave voluntarily. It is planning to shorten the required time away from the country before these people can return to Japan from five years to one, on the condition that they express an intention to leave the country before they receive deportation orders.
The agency also plans to change how it handles refugee applications. Under the current law, applicants are allowed to remain in the country while their applications are processed. Repeated applications tend to result in longer periods of detention.
The agency is planning to end the suspension of deportation in cases where a second application is rejected, even if a third is submitted.
It plans to put in place a new process to order the deportation of detainees who exhibit disruptive behavior. There will be the possibility of prison if the order is refused.
The agency plans to submit a revision bill to the ordinary session of the Diet next year.

A restaurant near a US naval base in Japan has launched a new menu item: the Biden Burger. Named for the presidential challenger, the hamburger has gone on sale at the eatery TSUNAMI in the city of Yokosuka, south of Tokyo.
Diner operator Iida Shigeru grills various hamburgers named after past US presidents. He began serving the Trump Burger four years ago.
Now, he launched the Biden Burger on Friday, as the Democratic hopeful leads incumbent Republican Donald Trump in the still undecided race.
The Biden comes with Philadelphia cheese and potato chips from the state of Pennsylvania, a major chip producer. Joe Biden was born in Pennsylvania.
The Trump comes with bacon and egg, a presidential favorite, and jalapeno chili pepper, supposedly reflecting Trump's sharp tongue.
Patrons talked about the US election as they studied the menu. A man who chose the Biden said he wanted to try the new item and said the challenger looks set to win the race.
A couple who ordered the Trump said US elections are too complicated and this one is taking too long. They said such a process wouldn't happen in Japan.
Iida said although the election result is yet to come, he added the Biden Burger to be ready for whichever candidate wins.
