At least 20 more anti-coup protesters in Myanmar reportedly have been gunned down by security forces, while the military declared martial law in some areas of the country's largest city, Yangon.

Local media say security forces opened fire on demonstrators in Yangon, the central city of Bago, and elsewhere on Sunday.

The death toll since the start of the rallies last month is now believed to exceed 100. Included are at least 70 fatalities announced on Thursday by an independent UN investigator, and at least 10 deaths on Saturday.

On Sunday night, martial law was imposed on the Hlaingthaya district and elsewhere in Yangon after security forces began to crack down on protesters, and several clothes factories caught fire.

In areas under martial law, judicial authority has been transferred to the military commander. This indicates the military's readiness to impose crackdowns, which before had mainly been done by police.

A group that includes lawmakers from Aung San Suu Kyi's political party issued a statement on Saturday. It says the time has come for all ethnic brothers to join hands "to end the dictatorship for good."

Aung San Suu Kyi is still being detained by the military.

Members of Myanmar's ethnic minority groups living in Japan have held protests in Tokyo against last month's military coup in their country.

About 200 people gathered in front of the United Nations University in Tokyo on Sunday. The rally was organized by Kachin people living in Japan. About 30 Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar also took part.

Myanmar is a multiracial country comprising more than 130 ethnic groups. Many Rohingya Muslims have fled oppression by Myanmar's military in recent years.

Security police have repeatedly opened fire on anti-coup protesters around Myanmar. Local media report that at least 10 people were killed on Saturday alone.

That brings the death toll from military violence to over 80, based on the figure announced by the United Nations last Thursday.

Participants in Sunday's protest in Tokyo called on the international community to support protesters in Myanmar. They held up placards asking "how many dead bodies" the UN needs to take action.

Vice President of the Burmese Rohingya Association in Japan, Aung Tin, told NHK that he took part in the protest as a citizen of Myanmar, overcoming differences in religion and ethnicity, in an effort to restore democracy in the country. He urged Japan to support the protests in Myanmar.

Eight Hong Kong pro-democracy activists living overseas have issued a charter that calls for autonomy and freedom in the territory.

They unveiled the "2021 Hong Kong Charter" during an online news conference on Sunday.

The document calls for a democratic, autonomous and free system for Hong Kong, and a halt to political oppression by the Chinese Communist Party.

Among the initiators of the charter was Nathan Law, a leader of the 2014 Umbrella protest movement who fled to Britain.

He said the activists are determined to continue their fight for democracy overseas. He added that their responsibility is to speak up for people in Hong Kong, raise awareness, and engage in international advocacy work.

Former Hong Kong lawmaker Ted Hui, who has relocated to Australia, described the charter as a pledge between himself and his homeland. He called on people to join what he described as a long fight for Hong Kong.

The call from exiled activists follows the arrests of a number of pro-democracy politicians and activists in the territory in the wake of the implementation of the national security law for Hong Kong.

Earlier this month, China's National People's Congress decided to reform the electoral system in the territory. The expected changes are likely to prevent politicians critical of Beijing and the Hong Kong government from running for office.

The national security law for Hong Kong covers activities overseas as well as foreign nationals. But the pro-democracy activists living abroad say they are still determined to seek support from the international community.

The Japanese minister overseeing the government's COVID-19 vaccination program says he will call on businesses to allow employees to take leave to be vaccinated.

Kono Taro said in his internet program that side effects often come with vaccinations, and the likelihood of developing adverse reactions from the vaccine is probably higher than from a flu shot.

He added that people who get the jab quite often develop symptoms such as a fever, swelling, and slight fatigue the next day.

Kono referred to allergic reactions called anaphylaxis.

He said people afflicted with anaphylaxis in Japan have all recovered.

He said he wants as many people as possible to receive a shot after getting informed about the vaccine.

Kono also said the government is considering ways to allow people to take leave from work to get inoculated or if they develop adverse reactions after being vaccinated.

He also indicated the government may consider measures to carry out vaccinations at workplaces.

Japan's labor ministry has decided to ramp up measures to prevent human trafficking that involves foreign technical interns working in Japan.

As of June of last year, there were about 400,000 foreign workers in Japan who had come to the country in the Technical Intern Training Program.

The labor ministry says there were cases in which trainees were forced to work for long hours at lower wages and virtually barred from escaping.

Last month, the ministry sent a notice to local labor bureaus instructing them to step up measures against such practices.

The ministry suggested that labor standards inspection offices and an organization that refers trainees to businesses jointly monitor and investigate if suspected human trafficking cases are reported or trainees seek protection.

The ministry said serious cases should be investigated and then referred to prosecutors, and that cooperation with police should be strengthened if foreign workers are allegedly victimized by violence or confinement.

The US State Department noted in an annual report issued last year that Japanese authorities failed to identify a single trafficking case in the Technical Intern Training Program despite persistent reports of forced labor.

The labor ministry says it will take seriously the US findings that Japan's effort to crack down on human trafficking is insufficient and it will work harder to eliminate abuses of the human rights of foreign trainees.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has declared the start of cherry blossom season in Tokyo.

Agency officials confirmed on Sunday afternoon that at least five blossoms had opened on the benchmark tree of the Somei-yoshino variety at Yasukuni Shrine in central Tokyo.

The declaration came 12 days earlier than average. It was the same as last year, and the earliest since statistics were first kept in 1953.

Temperatures on Sunday exceeded the seasonal average in some parts of the country. Although rain clouds spread over the northeastern Tohoku region and other areas, eastern and western Japan were mainly sunny.

A commercial weather-information firm says cherry trees will likely start blooming earlier than usual in many western and eastern parts of the country.
