Tokyo officials say 101 people are in serious condition, or six more than on Saturday.

The chief executive of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee denies there is a cause-and-effect relationship between the Games and the surge in coronavirus cases.

Muto Toshiro made the comment at a press conference on Sunday to summarize the first half of the competition.

He said, "I think we have been able to maintain the situation with the objective of not putting a burden on local medical services, to the extent possible, and keeping the Games running.

Muto was echoing earlier remarks by Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide and Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko.
They've said there's no causal link between the Games and the spike in cases.

Muto said he wanted to continue taking all possible precautions as the Games enter their second half.

But organizers revealed on Sunday that 18 people related to the Games have tested positive, including one foreign athlete. That brings the total to 259 since July 1, when test results first started being announced.

Xander Schauffele of the United States has won the Olympic gold in men's golf, finishing the tournament at 18 under par to claim a one-stroke victory.

The 27-year-old finished just ahead of Slovakia's Rory Sabbatini, calmly sinking a putt on the last hole to secure the win. The victory is the first Olympic individual golf gold for the US since 1900.

Further down the leaderboard, seven players faced off in a playoff for bronze. Taiwan's Pan Cheng-tsung finished ahead of a crowded field that included Ireland's four-time major winner Rory McIlroy and Japan's Matsuyama Hideki.

Matsuyama won this year's Masters and was competing for the first time since recovering from the coronavirus. He said he was disappointed by the result and felt "nothing but regret" at missing out on the podium.

Australia's Emma McKeon has set an Olympic record for most medals at a single Games by a female swimmer.

McKeon dominated the final day of swimming at the Games, winning the women's 50-meter and 4 by 100-meter medley relay for her third and fourth golds in Tokyo.

She finishes with seven medals, joining a select group of four swimmers to achieve the feat. The only other female athlete in any sport to equal the haul is Soviet gymnast Maria Gorokhovskaya back in 1952.

American star Caeleb Dressel also added to an impressive collection of silverware on Sunday. He claimed his fourth and fifth golds of the Games.

Dressel set an Olympic record en route to winning the men's 50-meter freestyle. And he was part of the US team that set a world record as it won the men's 4 by 100-meter medley relay.

Sunday also featured the final appearance in Tokyo for one of Japan's most popular athletes, Ikee Rikako. She returned to competition just last summer after recovering from leukemia. Ikee didn't manage to get any medals this time around, but she says she's looking forward to improving as a swimmer and competing at the Paris Games in three years.

Japan's Olympic judo campaign has come to a stunning end, after it lost the gold medal match of the mixed team event.

Fans had been hoping for Japan to finish with one last gold in what was the final judo event of the Tokyo Games. It was also the sport's first-ever mixed team competition at the Olympics.

Japan's opponents in the final were European heavyweights France. Their team featured two-time gold medalist Teddy Riner.

Japan wasn't short on star power themselves, fielding a lineup that included gold medalists Arai Chizuru and Wolf Aaron.

But France cruised to a four to one victory, with Sone Akira recording the lone Japanese victory.

Despite the disappointing result, Japan finishes the Games with nine individual judo golds, its biggest haul ever.

The event also featured a refugee team. It's the first time that refugee Olympians have taken part in a team competition in any sport. They lost to Germany in the first round.

Javad Mahjoub, originally from Iran, called the event a good experience and said he enjoyed competing on a team with people from around the world.

US retail giant Amazon says it has been fined a record 886 million dollars by the European Union for data protection violations.

Amazon disclosed in a regulatory filing on Friday that the Luxembourg National Commission for Data Protection imposed the fine on July 16. The regulator said Amazon had violated the EU's General Data Protection Regulation that came into effect three years ago.

The regulation requires companies to seek people's consent before using their personal data.

Amazon's European operations are headquartered in Luxembourg.

The e-commerce giant says it believes the decision "relies on subjective and untested interpretations of European privacy law" and is without merit.

In 2019, France's regulatory authorities fined Google for breaching the GDPR.

Toyota Motor Corporation together with a major construction company will begin a project using hydrogen produced with geothermal energy.

Obayashi Corporation built a hydrogen plant in Kokonoe town in Oita Prefecture in Kyushu.

The plant uses electricity created by geothermal energy to decompose water to produce hydrogen.

By using this method, carbon dioxide will not be generated during its production process.

The hydrogen will then be supplied to Toyota's factory in Fukuoka Prefecture in Kyushu to be used with fuel cells in forklifts.

The car maker has already put this method into good use.

The company is utilizing the hydrogen as fuel for a vehicle equipped with a hydrogen engine at a race being held in Oita from Saturday.

Toyota has been selling hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the market as it eyes hydrogen as a next generation energy source.

Toyota's president Toyoda Akio said that the company will look for more partners to realize a hydrogen-driven society.

Toyoda also said his company will present more options to create a Japanese style of achieving carbon neutrality.

Japan has started giving coronavirus vaccinations to expatriates temporarily returning to their home country at two international airports in and near Tokyo.

Vaccine doses are available at Narita International Airport in Chiba Prefecture and Tokyo's Haneda Airport from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. People have to make a reservation on a special government website.

The move is in response to a survey taken by the government covering Japanese nationals living abroad. Many of the respondents said they prefer to receive injections in Japan.

The Foreign Ministry says about 40,000 expats are hoping to get jabs in Japan.

It says several hundred of them are expected to be inoculated on Sunday alone.

The vaccinations for returning nationals will continue until early January next year.

A senior Foreign Ministry official is calling on expats who want to be vaccinated to use this opportunity as infections are surging across the world.

A city near Tokyo has started to use a mosque as a site for coronavirus vaccinations for foreigners living in the area.

Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture, designates a local mosque as an inoculation venue for foreign residents, who often have difficulty in making vaccine reservations in Japanese.

Fifty-four foreigners living in the city and surrounding areas gathered at the mosque on Saturday. They had made bookings through the mosque.

The foreign residents received shots after being interviewed by a doctor through interpreters.

There was a curtained area in the site so that Muslim women can be hidden from view when receiving jabs into their arms.

City officials say the mosque will open every Saturday for vaccinations.

A 51-year-old man from Sri Lanka said he has no worries about language because people from his home country will help if he doesn't understand something.

City Mayor Uchino Masaru said the goal is to increase the ratio of vaccinated people in the community by eliminating language barriers.
