Taliban leaders have been preparing to form a new government following the end of the 20-year US operation in Afghanistan.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said the group's leaders held a three-day conference through Tuesday in the southern city of Kandahar. He said the agenda included security improvement and basic policies for governing the country.

Mujahid spoke at a gathering in the capital Kabul to celebrate the withdrawal of US troops on Tuesday.

Local media say he expressed hope that the new government will be endorsed by the international community, including the US, and that it will have good relations with them politically and economically.

He stressed that the new government will guarantee safety for all Afghans.

The Taliban have repeatedly called on the Afghan people for reconciliation, but have yet to build trust. Many of the people who worked for the collapsed government or were employed on foreign governments' projects still want to flee the country.

Japan's Princess Mako is expected to marry her college classmate Komuro Kei as early as the end of this year.

Sources close to the matter say the couple is expected to register their marriage later this year. The move comes as Komuro now has the prospect of working at a law firm in the US state of New York.

The sources say none of the usual ceremonies that are part of a wedding of an Imperial family member, including the engagement, will be held. They say the Princess has declined to receive the amount of money to which she is entitled.

Crown Prince Akishino, Princess Mako's father, said in November last year that parents should respect their children's wishes to marry. He noted that the Constitution stipulates that marriage shall be based only on the mutual consent of both sexes.

Komuro released a document to explain details of his family's financial problem in April, and expressed his intention to provide money to settle the trouble.

China is set to incorporate the political ideology of President Xi Jinping into its national curriculum for all school levels from elementary to university.

China's Education Ministry published guidelines on the new mandatory courses on August 24.

It said that Xi's "thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era" will be introduced to the curriculum in phases.

In China, the new term starts in many of its elementary, junior high and high schools on Wednesday.

The ministry says "Xi Jinping Thought" will be taught in those schools using a new textbook.

Some parts of the textbook are available online.

The material for elementary schools takes up Xi's signature slogan, "the Chinese Dream," while the high school textbook features the country's Belt and Road economic initiative.

The ministry stresses the need for students to "arm their brains" with Xi's thought to "cultivate successors of socialism."

Xi's political thought was added to the charter of the ruling Communist Party at the Party Congress in 2017, as one of the party's guiding principles. It was formally enshrined in the country's constitution the following year.

It is widely viewed that Xi, whose term as Communist Party chief expires next year, will keep power for an extended period. The new curriculum is seen as an attempt to enhance his authority.
