In Japan's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party leadership election, Kishida Fumio, former LDP Policy Research Council Chairperson, has become president. The career politician is virtually assured to become prime minister, following Suga Yoshihide.
The race resulted in a runoff between Regulatory Reform Minister Kono Taro and Kishida. The two party veterans were not able to secure more than 50 percent of votes in the first round.
In the runoff election, Kishida beat Kono, nabbing 257 votes to Kono's 170.
On Monday, Diet members will elect the country's new prime minister. Kishida is virtually assured to win, as the LDP and its junior coalition partner Komeito control both Houses of the Diet.

Let's take a closer look at the man now poised to lead Japan.
Kishida was born into politics -- seemingly destined to follow in the footsteps of his lawmaker father and grandfather. After just five years as a banker Kishida first dipped his toes into public service. He became his father's secretary. In 1993, he took over that Hiroshima seat and has been re-elected eight times.
Eventually, he was tapped to become Japan's top diplomat. Kishida held that role for over 4 straight years, a record in post-war Japan. As foreign minister he was instrumental in bringing Barack Obama to his home city.
It marked the first time a sitting US president saw the destructive legacy of America's atomic bombing up close.
Kishida also worked to ease long-standing tensions with Seoul. In 2015, he struck a deal with his South Korean counterpart on the politically sensitive issue surrounding people referred to as wartime comfort women.
The 64-year-old is known as a soft-spoken, honest politician. Now, a man called too serious -- or even boring -- has reached a pinnacle of political achievement.

A North Korean newspaper says the country carried out its first test-launch of a newly developed hypersonic missile on Tuesday morning.
The ruling Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun on Wednesday reported that a Hwasong-8 missile was launched in the northern province of Jagang. It carries an image of a missile ascending while trailing orange flame.
The report said the party's senior official Pak Jong Chon observed the launch. Pak is a close aide to leader Kim Jong Un.
The report said defense scientists have confirmed the navigational control and stability of the missile.
It added that they verified technical specifications, such as the guiding maneuverability and the flight characteristics of the detached gliding warhead.
The report said the missile met all required specifications and stressed its strategic significance to reinforce the country's defense capabilities.
Japan's defense white paper describes a hypersonic missile as a weapon that flies at the speed of more than Mach 5, which is five times the speed of sound.
Experts say the United States, China and Russia have been developing hypersonic missiles. North Korea commented on the development of the weapon in January.

Restrictions on electricity supplies in China are affecting people's daily lives and industrial production.
Chinese media are reporting that surging coal prices and tighter environmental regulations to reduce carbon dioxide emissions are believed to be the reasons behind the restrictions.
The media also say power supplies are limited in wide areas, including the provinces of Guangdong in the south, Jiangsu in the east and Liaoning in the north.
Some residential areas have also been hit by power outages, while many companies have suspended operations.
A factory of a Japanese precision equipment maker in Guangdong is limited to only half the usual amount of electricity during daytime for six days a week.
The factory has moved part of its operations to night hours.
Another Japanese electronics maker says it has to use its own power generation system, because its power consumption is limited to 10 percent of the usual amount for five days a week.
As China aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, regional governments are believed to be stepping up regulations to meet their allocated targets.
