Russian forces in Ukraine are facing yet another setback. In the first weeks of the invasion, they failed to take the capital Kyiv. So they re-focused their efforts away from the north to areas in the south and east. However, they are being pushed back in the face of Ukrainian resistance.

Russian forces attempted a river crossing in the eastern Donbas region. They built a pontoon bridge and brought in armored vehicles. Then the Ukrainians attacked.

The Ukrainian military released footage of the bridge in ruins and a number of tanks and other vehicles destroyed. British defense officials say the Russians may have suffered losses equivalent to an entire battalion.

Russian commanders are making a significant effort to take control of Donetsk and another region in the east, Luhansk. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says those efforts, too, are doomed to fail.

Zelenskyy said Russia's strategic defeat is already obvious to everyone in the world -- and even to those who still communicate with them. He said they just don't have the courage to admit it.

Russian forces are also trying to make headway in southern Ukraine. The city of Mariupol has endured the most destructive fighting of the war. The two sides are battling for control of a steel-making compound where Ukrainian troops have been holding out. Officials in Kyiv say the battle for Mariupol has killed tens of thousands of people.

The fighting around Snake Island has become part of the battle for control of the Black Sea region. Satellite images appear to show a group of sunken Russian vessels near the island.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Russian counterpart for the first time since the invasion began. He pressed Sergei Shoigu for an immediate ceasefire. He also stressed the importance of keeping lines of communication open.

The NATO alliance and partners are staging joint drills in Poland, which neighbors Ukraine.

About 7,000 troops from more than 20 countries are involved in the exercise. They include Sweden, which is considering applying for NATO membership.

Some of the activities are taking place in eastern Poland, about 150 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. On Friday, military vehicles practiced crossing a river using a makeshift bridge as fighter jets provided cover.

In another area, US, French and Swedish forces transported tanks and armored vehicles on a ship.

A member of the Swedish military said the drills serve as a good opportunity to learn how US forces carry out joint operations.

The Polish military says the drills are not aimed at any particular country or situation.

The United States is apparently assuming a joint contingency operation with Poland aimed at strengthening coordination.

The drills have seen US forces mobilize M-1 Abrams tanks, which are due to be sold to Poland.

The deputy mayor of Odesa in Ukraine is warning of a global food crisis due to Russia's blockade of grain exports from the port city.

Oleg Bryndak spoke to NHK on Friday. He said grain prices could surge in developed nations if the situation continues, adding that people in Africa could suffer from hunger.

Odesa's port is Ukraine's largest. Bryndak said Russia is blocking access to the Black Sea, and about 80 ships are unable to depart.

Fighting is intensifying near Odesa. Ukrainian forces are trying to recapture Snake Island in the Black Sea.

Key words : Biden two-day

The United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have agreed to elevate their relations to a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership."

US President Joe Biden and ASEAN leaders wrapped up a two-day summit in Washington on Friday.

Biden said that the US and ASEAN are embarking on a new era in their relations. He also said the two sides will continue to elevate their partnership and strengthen their cooperation.

A joint statement issued after the summit says that the US and ASEAN have committed to establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership at a summit scheduled for November.

ASEAN has already established a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" with China.

There is a view among ASEAN members that the US involvement in the region has been insufficient.

The Biden administration is apparently aiming to strengthen its ties with the association in a bid to counter China's growing influence in Southeast Asia.

With regard to Ukraine, the statement says, without mentioning Russia, that the sides continue to reaffirm their respect for sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity.

A US research group says new satellite images indicate North Korea has resumed construction at a nuclear reactor site in the country's northwest.

The group led by Professor Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey analyzed satellite photos of the reactor at a complex in Nyongbyon.

The researchers said imagery from April 20 shows what appears to be pipe segments and construction equipment near a facility that pumps cooling water out of a river.

They said another image taken on May 7 shows that the pipe had been buried and work to connect the reactor's cooling loop was underway.

The group concludes that Pyongyang restarted the construction to complete the reactor.

The research group said it is difficult to estimate how quickly North Korea could finish the project.

It said a completed reactor would increase North Korea's capacity to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons by a factor of 10.

The group said the latest development shows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un seeks to acquire modern nuclear weapons and is preparing to resume nuclear tests.

North Korea confirmed 21 new deaths and an additional 174,400 people with fever symptoms on Friday after recognizing its first coronavirus outbreak.

The ruling Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun reports that Leader Kim Jong Un was briefed on the "infectious disease" at a meeting of the party's Political Bureau on Saturday.

The report says the tally of people with fever has risen to 524,400 from late April through Friday. The North's population is about 25.78 million.

The paper says more than 280,000 people are being treated and 27 have died.

The country's daily count of fever cases on Friday was more than nine times that of Thursday.
Kim described the situation as a "great turmoil since the country's founding," expressing a strong sense of crisis in the meeting.

He said it is very important to study virus control measures in developed nations. He told officials to learn from China's advanced results and to step up measures.

North Korea officially confirmed its first cases of the coronavirus on Thursday and said it would raise its epidemic prevention system to the maximum emergency level. Kim ordered all cities and counties to lock down.

The North's leadership is rushing to conduct virus testing on people and distribute medical supplies by mobilizing healthcare workers, as well as students and teachers from medical universities. But its medical system is said to be vulnerable, and there is concern that infections may spread further.
