Japanese government sources say North Korea launched three ballistic missiles on Thursday evening.
They say North Korea fired the missiles eastward from an inland area between about 9:30 p.m. and 9:40 p.m. They also say the missiles appear to have fallen outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.
The Japanese government sources say the missiles are estimated to have flown 500 kilometers at a maximum altitude of roughly 150 kilometers.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff also say North Korea launched three short-range ballistic missiles on Thursday evening.
They say North Korea fired the missiles from an area in or near Koksan in North Hwanghae Province from around 9:35 p.m. to 9:49 p.m.

The South Korean military said North Korea fired about 80 artillery shells into waters north of the de facto maritime border between the two countries on Thursday night.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea's action took place at around 11:28 p.m., some two hours after Pyongyang launched three short-range ballistic missiles from an inland location.
They said North Korea fired the shells eastward from a site in or near the county of Kumgang in the southeastern province of Kangwon.
They also said that the shells hit the military buffer zone north of the Northern Limit Line. The maritime demarcation boundary was set between the two Koreas by the United Nations Command after the armistice agreement over the Korean War in 1953.
The South Korean military sternly warned North Korea to immediately halt its provocations. It said the spate of provocative actions by North Korea undermines the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula as well as the wider international community.

A gunman has opened fire during an anti-government protest rally in Pakistan, killing one person and wounding seven others including former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Local media say Khan's leg wound was not life-threatening.
Authorities said the shooting occurred in the eastern province of Punjab on Thursday.
Police arrested the suspected shooter immediately after the incident and were looking into a motive.
A spokesperson for Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf or "Movement for Justice," called the shooting "a clear assassination attempt." Supporters of the former prime minister are also holding protests across the country.
Khan was ousted as prime minister in a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April.
He began a protest march in the eastern city of Lahore last week, calling for early general elections. The convoy was heading for the capital Islamabad.
The demonstrations came after the election commission disqualified Khan from holding public office for allegedly selling state gifts unlawfully, which he denies.

People in Japan are leaving flowers at a temporary memorial in Tokyo for the 156 victims of the crowd crush in an alleyway in the South Korean capital, Seoul.
On Thursday, about 20 Korean and Japanese people visited the memorial, which is in Shinjuku Ward inside an office of the Federation of Korean Associations, Japan -- an organization of Korean people in Japan.
Two young Japanese women were among the victims of Saturday's deadly crush in the Itaewon nightlife district.
A Japanese woman in her 50s was among the people who laid flowers in Tokyo. She said she found the tragedy heartbreaking as she has a son in his 20s.
Hong Seong-hyeop, vice chairman of the Federation of Korean Associations, Japan, said his organization set up the memorial so Korean residents and Japanese people could mourn the victims of the crush together.
He said he was heartbroken that so many young people had died and that two of them were Japanese who had loved South Korea and wanted to realize their dreams.
The Federation says people will be able to lay flowers at the memorial until Saturday.
