Japan's flagship H3 rocket launches into space

Japan has launched its new flagship H3 rocket into space in a second attempt.

The H3 lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Center in the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima at 9:22 a.m., Japan time.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, announced that it confirmed the combustion of the second-stage engine was completed, and the rocket has reached orbit as planned.

The first H3 rocket was launched in March last year. But the launch ended in failure after the rocket's second-stage engine did not ignite.

Reports of Navalny's death prompt tributes, anger

Leaders around the world are offering tributes -- and expressing anger -- over the reported death of Alexei Navalny, the Russian dissident who was one of President Vladimir Putin's most outspoken critics.

Navalny gained renown for exposing and speaking out against corruption in Putin's inner circle. He was poisoned in 2020 and spent months recovering in Germany. On his return to Russia, he was promptly arrested on charges that he dismissed as politically motivated.

Navalny was sent to a prison colony north of the Arctic Circle. Authorities said on Friday that he died after taking a walk. They added that all the necessary steps were taken to revive him but that they did not achieve "positive results."

Dmitry Peskov, the Russian presidential press secretary, said, "As far as we know, in accordance with all current rules, the Federal Penitentiary Service is conducting examinations, clarifications and so on."

He added that blaming Russian leaders for Navalny's death is "unacceptable."

Still, many are laying the blame at the very top of the government.

Navalny's wife, Yulia Navalnaya, responded to the news while attending the Munich Security Summit. She said, "I want Putin and everyone around him -- Putin's friends, his government -- to know that they'll bear responsibility for what they did to our country, my family and my husband."

Western leaders expressed their shock. US President Joe Biden said he was "not surprised" but "outraged." He added, "Russian authorities are going to tell their own story. Make no mistake -- make no mistake -- Putin is responsible for Navalny's death."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his frustration, saying, "Putin doesn't care who dies, as long as he retains his position. And that is why he must not keep anything."

Some Russians have turned out to pay their respects to Navalny. However, officials have warned them against staging mass rallies in Moscow.
A rights group says more than 100 people have already been taken into custody.

Munich Security Conference highlights Ukraine

Leaders from more than 40 countries have kicked off their annual security conference in Munich, Germany. They will be meeting from Friday through Sunday. Their talks will focus on the war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Ukraine's allies say they have seen Russia become a "more authoritarian power" and that a Ukrainian defeat would make the whole world "more dangerous." They pledged to "stand up for democracy" and renewed their commitment to stand with the country.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Putin will "not get what he wants on the battlefield." However, he admitted the situation is "difficult," adding that stalled US support has "impacted" the war.

US Vice President Kamala Harris knows Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives may block additional aid of about 60 billion dollars for Kyiv. Still, she gave assurances that America will continue to secure the weapons and resources "Ukraine so badly needs" because a failure to do so would be a "gift to Putin."

European leaders say they are doing their part.

On Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised a new package that includes over 1 billion dollars, focused on air defenses and ammunition.

French President Emmanuel Macron also pledged more military support of up to about 3 billion dollars to stem what he calls a "new phase" in Russia's aggression.

Ukraine announces withdrawal of troops from Avdiivka

Ukraine's military commander-in-chief says troops will be pulled out of the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, where Russian forces are intensifying their assault.

Oleksandr Syrskyi announced in a social media post on Saturday that the decision was made "to avoid encirclement and preserve the lives and health of servicemen."

Syrskyi said on Wednesday that he visited Avdiivka and other frontline locations. He described the conditions as extremely difficult.

The Russian military has stepped up its offensive against Ukraine's key defensive position since around last October in an effort to take control of the entire Donetsk region in the east.

Pentagon: War in Ukraine has cost Russia $211 bil., over 310,000 casualties

The US Department of Defense says nearly two years of fighting in Ukraine has cost Moscow up to 211 billion dollars and over 310,000 military casualties.

A senior Pentagon official disclosed the estimates to reporters on Friday.

The official said up to 211 billion dollars have probably been spent to equip, deploy, maintain and sustain operations in Ukraine.

The official said Ukrainian forces have sunk, destroyed or damaged at least 20 medium-sized or larger Russian Navy vessels.

The official added that without supplemental funding, Ukraine will not have adequate air defense interceptors to defend its cities, critical infrastructure and frontline troops against the continual barrage of Russian missiles.

The official urged the US Congress to quickly pass emergency budget bills for additional military support.

Trump ordered to pay $355 million in NY civil fraud ruling

A New York judge has ordered former US President Donald Trump to pay nearly 355 million dollars in a civil fraud verdict against the Trump Organization.

The focus of Friday's ruling was on how much Trump and other defendants would be ordered to pay after it was found last September they had lied about the organization's net worth.

The judge ordered Trump and other defendants to pay 354.9 million dollars. Trump was also barred from serving as an officer or director of any corporation in New York State for three years.

The lawsuit filed by the New York attorney general accused the business entity that Trump ran before taking office of overstating his net worth.

Attorney General Letitia James argued the organization made fraudulent financial statements for about 10 years to get favorable loan terms from lenders. She had demanded that Trump and other defendants return some 370 million dollars. Trump's side has consistently denied the allegations.

Trump swiftly responded to Friday's ruling. Speaking to reporters, he blamed US President Joe Biden for what he called a witch hunt against a political foe. He expressed his intention to appeal.

Trump is faced with more trials regarding four criminal cases in which he has been indicted while campaigning for the presidential election in November. He is the lead contender in the Republican Party nomination race.
