Welcome to NHK Newsline. I'm Ramin Mellegard in Tokyo.

US President Donald Trump has warned that Washington could walk away from trying to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia if either side drags their feet.

If for some reason one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we're just going to say you're foolish, you're fools, you're horrible people, and we're going to just take a pass.

But the president said he wants an end to the conflict and expressed his intention to continue dialogue. Trump's remarks came after Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US is not going to continue with efforts to end the fighting for weeks and months on end. Rubio told separately told NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in a phone call that the US could back off if a clear path to peace does not emerge soon.

And Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country has received information that China is supplying weapons to Russia. China has dismissed the claim. Zelensky spoke at a news conference on Thursday. He said the information was from the intelligence services and it concerned gunpowder and artillery.

I think we will be able to talk about this in great detail next week, especially about the data that Chinese representatives are engaged in the production of some weapons on the territory of Russia.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jiang denied Ukraine's claim at a news conference on Friday. He said China has been actively working toward a cease-fire.

We have never provided lethal weapons to any party to the conflict and strictly controlled the export of dual-use articles. China firmly opposes groundless accusations and political manipulation.

Kyiv has also accused China of allowing more than 150 of its citizens to join Russian troops to fight against Ukraine. And the Trump administration is piling pressure on Beijing with more than just tariffs.

Chinese ships that dock at US ports will soon need to pay a new fee.
The Office of the US Trade Representative, or USTR, made the announcement on Thursday. The measure is part of plans to revive the US shipbuilding industry in light of China's dominance. The USTR says it applies to owners and operators of Chinese flagged or built ships. It says fees will be enforced in about six months time and be raised in phases with amounts based on net tonnage or containers. US Trade Representative Jameson Greer says the measures will begin to reverse Chinese dominance. and send a demand signal for US-built ships. The USTR says the measure is based on Section 301 of the Trade Act about trading partners who engage in unfair practices. The announcement left officials in Beijing seething.

The measure harms other countries and the United States. It will raise shipping costs and disrupt supply chains.

They urged Washington to respect multilateral rules. He also said China will take all necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.

And the US White House has created a new website featuring a theory that the COVID-19 outbreak began with the virus leaking from a Chinese research lab.
The website revealed on Friday is called Lab Leak, The True Origins of COVID-19. It states that the virus has a biological characteristic not found in nature and that a lab in Wuhan, China, has a history of conducting research at inadequate biosafety levels.
The website shows a satellite image of Wuhan and asserts that a lab-related incident is most likely the origin of COVID-19. US media outlets report that a federal website that previously informed the public about testing and vaccinesfor COVID-19 now redirects to this site.
The White House has apparently drawn its information from a report by the House of Representatives Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus pandemic. The Washington Post and other media note that the committee was led by Republicans.
Reports also say that intelligence agencies and experts have been split on how the outbreak began.

Now, more details are emerging about Wednesday's talks on tariffs between the US and Japan. Sources say the Trump administration wants Japan to import more automobiles and food.
According to multiple Japanese government sources, President Donald Trump claimed the US has a massive trade deficit with Japan, which he wants to bring down to zero. Trump also alleged that there are no American cars running on Japanese roads and that Japan does not buy farming products from the US.
According to the Japan Automobile Importers Association, sales of American cars in Japan in fiscal 2024 exceeded 10,000 units, excluding Tesla. And according to the US Bureau of Industry and Security, Japan imported $14.9 billion worth of US agricultural products in 2022. That equates to 7.7% of US global exports of those commodities. Now, the sources also say Trump complained that Tokyo is not shouldering enough of the costs involving the US-Japan security alliance. In separate talks with Treasury Secretary Scott Basson,And other senior officials, the sources say US negotiators made a series of requests. They were apparently based on AUS Trade Representative report on so-called foreign trade barriers. A photo of the negotiation table on the US side shows what appears to be that report with sticky notes. These sources say US officials pushed the Japanese side to review Japan's safety standards for automobiles. They reportedly called them a non-tariff barrier preventing American cars from entering the market. The sources also say US officials listed rice, meat, seafood, potatoes and other products as trade items of interest. In response, Japan's representative reportedly asked the US side to prioritize those items.

And Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei is away from the Los Angeles Dodgers as he and his wife await the birth of their first child.
Ohtani stayed behind in California as his team faced the Rangers on Friday in Texas. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before the game he didn't know when the couple would have the baby. He was also unsure when Ohtani would be back in the lineup. MLB players can miss up to three days while on paternity leave.
Ohtani revealed in December that he and his wife were expecting a baby.
Now, at a fan event in February, he said he was anxious and excited and hopes the baby is born safely. Ohtani also said he hopes the couple's dog, Dekopin, will help look after the baby.

Now, Japanese astronaut Onishi Takuya has assumed command of the International Space Station, becoming the third Japanese person to take that role.
Onishi arrived at the ISS with three other crew members aboard the spacecraft crew Dragon on March 16. Their mission is scheduled to last for about 6 months.
In a change of command ceremony on Saturday, Onishi's Russian predecessor, Alexei Ovichinin, handed over a symbol of the responsibilities of the ISS commander.

This is a key from ISS. Now it's your key.

I believe I was given such an important role because the international community has recognized Japan's contribution to manned space exploration. The appointment is a reflection of expectations for Japan's role in the future, and I will do my best to live up to them.

And those are the top stories for this hour.
