It shows the aftermath of the quake in Severokurilsk. A town on the island of Paramushir, near the Kamchatka Peninsula. The footage shows water surging across a wide area and flooding buildings. The state-run TASS news agency has also aired the video.
Russian newspaper Ivestia posted this video on social media. It shows damage to a seafood processing facility in Severokurylsk. Buildings and cars along the coast were seen submerged in water. The paper also posted this video seemingly taken inside a house during the initial quake. It shows violent shaking and objects falling and scattering on the floor. The governor of Sakhalin posted this photo on social media. Parts of the ceiling appear to have fallen, with debris scattered across the floor. Reuters news agency released this video of this partially collapsed kindergarten building in the Kamchatka region. Russia's state-run TV says there are no reports of injuries there. A local resident spoke with NHK by phone, describing what she experienced when the quake struck.
I was in the car at the time and I felt a big horizontal jolt. It was like the ground was dancing. I think the shaking continued for about a minute. I was very scared.
Russian media cite local authorities is saying that the third tsunami that hit Severkurilsk was the most powerful and vessels were swept away. The governor of Russia's Kamchatka region says this was the strongest quake in decades.

Now, here in Japan, transportation services have been suspended or delayed due to the tsunami warning. And the impact is being felt along the country's coastal areas from Hokkaido to Wakayama Prefecture.
Trains have been suspended on the Tokaido Line, connecting Tokyo with Kyoto and Osaka, as well as parts of the KQ Line in Kanagao Prefecture.
Rail operators are asking passengers to check official websites for updates.
The suspension of travel services is causing confusion among visitors at key tourist spots.

Ferries have been affected, too. Services connecting Hokkaido and Aomori, as well as Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures, have been suspended. We spoke to Takashi Hiroaki, a professor at Hokkaido University, well versed in earthquakes and tsunami. He stressed the possibility of the threat of tsunami continuing for some time due to the strength of the Northern Pacific quake and its distance from Japan.
The maximum wave height was recorded in Hokkaido, more than 10 hours after the first wave arrived. That means people need to stay on the alert for a long time in the aftermath of this quake.
The Kamchatka Peninsula has experienced massive earthquakes and tsunamis in the past. The most powerful in recent history struck in November 1952.
