KIM JONG UN RAPS US, SOUTH KOREA AS SECURITY THREAT

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has condemned the United States and South Korea for increasing security threats. He has stressed his intention to further promote weapons development.
State-run Korean Central Television reported that Kim delivered a speech on Saturday at the opening ceremony of a military hardware exhibition in Pyongyang. Photos show what appear to be ICBM-class ballistic and cruise missiles on display, as well as drones. In his address, Kim described US-South Korea joint military drills as training for the future use of nuclear weapons. He accused the US and South Korea of posing a real and serious threat to the security of the North and countries in the region. Kim said he has allocated what he calls a special asset to important targets to counter the US military buildup in South Korea. He said the acceleration of arms development is necessary to remove the new threat and maintain the balance of power.
South Korea says Pyongyang is preparing a military parade to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of its ruling Workers Party on October 10.
Some observers say Pyongyang might unveil its latest weapons.

TAKAICHI HOLDS FIRST NEWS CONFERENCE AS LDP LEADER

Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party elected former Economic Security Minister Takaichi Sanai as its new president on Saturday. She's the first woman to lead the party. Now Takaichi laid out the priorities for her administration.

We must convene an extraordinary diet session to address the pressing issues many citizens are facing as soon as possible. Above all, I will focus our efforts on tackling rising prices.

She stressed her party's relationship with his junior partner. Kometo will remain the foundation of the ruling coalition, but she said if other parties share the LDP's perspective on certain issues, it may be expanded. She said, for example, that constitutional amendments, diplomacy, security and fiscal policies remain her party's priorities and are areas where they'll look for common ground. She also said amid mounting diplomatic challenges, she'll reaffirm and reinforce the Japan US alliance that includes trilateral cooperation with Washington and other partners such as South Korea, Australia and the Philippines. Takeichi said Japan will take a greater role in promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific for the sake of peace. Reporters asked Takeichi, if she assumes the role of prime minister, whether she would visit Yasukuni Shrine. The shrine honors Japan's war dead. Those remembered include leaders convicted of war crimes after World War II. Takeichi said the shrine should never be madeInto a diplomatic issue, she said she would work to create an environment where people around the world can pay the respects to the lives lost in their home countries. Takaichi said she will consider how to appropriately console the souls of the dead and pray for peace.

ISRAEL-HAMAS CONFLICT
DELEGATIONS TO HAVE TALKS IN EGYPT ON MONDAY

Egyptian officials say Israeli and Hamas delegations will meet in Egypt on Monday to discuss steps toward a hostage release and a military withdrawal in Gaza. Cairo has been a mediator in the conflict.
Egypt says the delegates will discuss issues, including specific steps for the hostage release, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel, in accordance with a peace plan proposed by the US. The move came after Hamas agreed on Friday to release all Israeli hostages, one of the conditions in the 20-point peace plan announced last month by US President Donald Trump. Now, residents of the Gaza Strip are voicing the wish to return home.

I expect an end to the bombings and killings. I will finally be able to feel safe.

The agreement is wonderful. But I wanted it to be done much earlier. The Gaza district has already been destroyed.

Gaza's health authorities said on Saturday that the death toll from Israeli aggression since October 2023 has surpassed 67,000. Israeli Prime Minister Binny Netanyahu said in a televised address Saturday night that he hopes he will be able to announce the return of all the hostages in the coming days. He also said, in the meantime, Israel's forces will remain in the areas that it controls in Gaza.
He said in the second phase, Hamas will be disarmed and the Gaza Strip will be demilitarized. Hamas has not responded to the demand for disarmament. Trump posted on social media earlier on Saturday that he has talked Israel into agreeing to an initial withdrawal line in Gaza. Arab media outlets say Israel will present the mediating countries with maps that show the areas it will withdraw from.

DRONE SIGHTINGS DISRUPT FLIGHTS AGAIN AT MUNICH AIRPORT

Drone sightings have again disrupted flight operations at Munich Airport in southern Germany. Poland and other countries have previously reported airspace violations by Russian unmanned aircraft.
The airport was closed from Friday night through Saturday morning after drone sightings were reported for the second time in two days. Operations have been gradually resumed, but flight cancellations have affected about 6,500 people.

We spent the night in the airport. We slept here. Also haven't been provided meal tickets yet.

Accommodation. Nothing. So yeah, I'm waiting.

We spent a lot of money at about more than 1000 euros. I was shocked.

The disruptions occurred after drone sightings forced the airport to close temporarily on Thursday. The German government said it plans to strengthen anti-drone measures.

LARGEST OPPOSITION PARTY WINS CZECH PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION

The Czech Republic's largest opposition party has won the country's parliamentary election. The country has been an active supporter of Ukraine, but the party promises to scale back its support.
Voting in the election ended on Saturday, the Czech government said the Anno party, the opposition led by former Prime Minister Andrei Babis, won more votes than the center-right ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Petfjalla. Anno is likely to gain the most seats in parliament. Babis declared victory in the Czech capital, Prague, delivering a speech in which he said he is happy that his party has achieved a historic result. Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Czech Republic has led efforts to provide Ukraine with artillery rounds as it faced shortages. The country has also accepted many refugees from Ukraine.
Babish included the reduction of aid to Ukraine in his campaign pledges and has shown an intention to halt the supply of artillery shells.
A 37-year-old woman who fled to Prague from Ukraine was interviewed by NHK.

I don't know what will be a reality or real steps after the election.

She expressed her disappointment in the election outcome.

TOKYO'S YAMANOTE LOOP MARKS 100 YEARS

The operator of the Yamanote Line in Tokyo is marking the 100th anniversary of the train's route's completion as a full loop. Some of the train cars are decorated to evoke memories of the past.
The loop was completed in November 1925, when an elevated track between Ueno and Tokyo Stations was opened. East Japan Railway started operating trains with two retro designs on Saturday. One is the 103 series, introduced in the 1960s, which features an all-light green body. The other is the 205 series, which replaced the 103 series and has a horizontal light green stripe onsilver body.
As the trains entered Osaki Station, railway fans gathered to take photos and went on board.

We are preparing various events at each station along the Yamanote Line. We hope many people will visit and enjoy them.

The commemorative trains are scheduled to operate until November 3.

And that is a wrap for this edition of NHK Newsline. I'm Ramin Mellegard. Thank you very much for joining us.
