CHINA MARKS 'ANNIVERSARY OF TAIWAN'S RESTORATION'
China has newly designated October 25 as the commemoration day of Taiwan's restoration and marked 80 years since the end of Japanese rule in Taiwan on Saturday.
High-level officials attended a commemorative meeting in Beijing, including Wang Huning, a member of the Chinese Communist Party's Politburo Standing Committee and the party's number four official.
Wang said establishing the commemoration day shows China's stance to maintain its one-China principle and to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He stressed China's unwavering commitment to achieving the complete unification of its land.
He added that there is no room for any form of separatist activities to promote Taiwan's independence.
Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, which handles policies on China, reacted sharply.
It said the ultimate goal of Beijing's One China policy is to annex Taiwan.
The council said Taiwan is consistent in its policy of maintaining the status quo in cross-strait relations.
It called on Beijing to discard threats and pressure and have a dialogue with Taiwan on an equal basis.

ISRAEL-HAMAS CONFLICT
GAZA RESIDENTS CALL FOR MORE AID
Two weeks have passed since the ceasefire took effect between Israel and Hamas.
But residents of the Gaza Strip are calling for more aid, as only around 15 percent of the amount agreed on under the peace deal is getting in.
The situation in Gaza remains unstable as Israel conducted aerial bombardments on Hamas bases, saying it was retaliation for attacks on Israeli forces.
Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera reports that at least four people at a refugee camp were injured in the attack.
Starvation continues despite aid efforts.
An NHK Gaza office staffer on Thursday saw residents receiving rice and lentil beans at a distribution point set up by the UN World Food Programme.
Gazan authorities say the number of humanitarian aid trucks entering Gaza each day since the ceasefire began... averages to 89.
That's up about 50 percent from September, but far below the 600 trucks a day specified in the agreement.
