In Japan, the spike in coronavirus cases continues to reach new peaks and upend daily life for people across the country. Tokyo reported more than 600 new infections on Thursday... a record daily tally.

More than 45,000 people have now tested positive in the capital.

Experts warn cases involving elderly people, who face higher risk of getting seriously ill, are on the rise.

Director Ohmagari Norio of Disease Control and Prevention Center said, "The number of newly infected people who are aged 65 or older, as well as the ratio against the total new cases, are increasing. We need to protect our elderly from being infected at all opportunities."
Hospitals, welfare facilities and schools in the northern prefecture of Hokkaido have been hit by cluster infections.

Officials are asking residents in the capital city of Sapporo to stay at home and avoid travel to other areas as much as possible until Christmas. Bars and restaurants are also asked to close early.

Hokkaido Governor Suzuki Naomichi said, "It is difficult to provide usual medical services during the New Year holidays in the first place. We must ease the burden on the healthcare system before that period so that it doesn't become overwhelmed."

Asahikawa City is facing a shortage of healthcare workers. Residents there will also be asked to refrain from non-essential outings.

A man in the city said, "After shopping I go home right away. My relatives gather to celebrate the New Year every year... but maybe not this time."

The western prefecture of Osaka confirmed 415 new cases on Thursday.

A cluster infection occurred at a hospital there that treats serious COVID-19 cases.

Eight patients and five medical staff tested positive earlier this month. All of them show light or no symptoms.

Osaka Governor Yoshimura Hirofumi said, "The cluster occurred in a different department in a different building. At this point, I don't think the hospital will be forced to stop treating coronavirus patients."

More than 173,000 cases have been reported across Japan since the pandemic began. Over 2,500 people have died.

Hong Kong media outlets are reporting that pro-democracy activist and media tycoon Jimmy Lai has been indicted for allegedly violating Beijing's new national security law.

Hong Kong police announced on Friday that they had charged a 73-year-old man for colluding with foreign forces and endangering national security.

Local media outlets have reported that the indicted man is Jimmy Lai. He is the founder of a pro-democracy newspaper, the Apple Daily. The paper is critical of Beijing.

Lai continued to call on the international community to support the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, even after the security law came into force in June. He did so by using social media platforms and by giving interviews to foreign media outlets. Local media say the charges against Lai may have stemmed from those actions.

Lai was arrested in August for violating the national security law. He was later released on bail. But he was not granted bail for another arrest on December 2. That time he was detained on suspicion of fraud.

About 30 people have been arrested for allegedly violating the security law. Lai is the fourth person among them to be indicted. He is likely the first to be indicted on charges of colluding with foreign forces.

Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Agnes Chow has been denied bail pending her appeal of a ten-month prison sentence for her role in a massive protest in June last year.

Chow was jailed on December 2 for crimes such as inciting citizens to take part in an unauthorized assembly.

She appealed the sentence as too harsh, and sought bail pending High Court proceedings.

The court on Wednesday rejected her request, saying Chow obviously took part in demonstrations and caused turmoil at the scene.

Chow's fellow activist Joshua Wong is also appealing his 13-and-a-half-month prison sentence.

Pro-democracy activists and politicians are under growing pressure in Hong Kong.

On Tuesday, eight people were arrested and charged in connection with demonstrations in July.

In Thailand, anti-government protesters have staged another large-scale demonstration in the capital.

Thursday's rally came after four key protest leaders, including university students, were questioned by police for allegedly insulting the monarchy.

Protesters gathered in the center of the capital, criticizing the decision to question the leaders. Thailand's lese-majeste law prohibits insulting or defaming the monarchy. One of the four told the crowd the law should be repealed.

Chinnawat Chankrachang said, "This law is obsolete. The worst thing is it's being used as a tool to destroy political dissent."

Police summoned the leaders on Tuesday regarding allegations they violated the law at an assembly in September.

People found guilty of insulting the royal family can face up to 15 years in prison. The lese-majeste law hasn't been used for several years, but the government seems ready to apply it to the demonstrators.

A unit of Sony is planning to buy the animation business of US telecom giant AT&T.

The Japanese company views its acquisition of Crunchyroll as part of a strategy to expand its global anime-streaming service.

The Sony unit, Funimation Global Group, will pay 1.175 billion dollars.

Crunchyroll distributes anime and video games in more than 200 countries and territories. It has about 90 million subscribers around the world.

Sony is aiming to make Japanese anime titles available throughout the world. That includes "Demon Slayer," or "Kimetsu no Yaiba," a smash hit movie co-distributed by a Sony subsidiary.

The video-streaming market has been growing during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people spend more time at home.
