South Korean President Moon Jae-in has formally temporarily suspended the country's top prosecutor from his duty.

Moon on Wednesday approved the decision of the Justice Ministry disciplinary panel, which earlier in the day suspended Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl for two months.

Yoon has been at odds with Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae.
Yoon led the investigation into a corruption allegation involving the Moon administration, while Choo was tapped by the president to reform the prosecution service.

The presidential office on Wednesday released a statement from Moon in which he apologized to the public for appointing Yoon to the office. Moon said he takes the matter seriously.

Yoon, who became the first incumbent prosecutor general to be penalized, released a statement before the president's endorsement of his suspension.

He described the ministry's move as an illegal and unjust step aimed solely at ousting him.

He also said he would address the problem in accordance with procedures stipulated in the Constitution and law.

Meanwhile, the presidential office disclosed Choo has expressed her intention to resign.

Sources close to the presidential office say Choo has likely judged she has completed her task as prosecutorial reforms have progressed, and that Moon will decide later whether to accept her resignation.

Japan and the United States have decided to put off seeking a conclusion on Japan's share of the cost of stationing US forces in the country before the end of the year.

The two sides began working-level talks on the matter last month as the current arrangement, which is agreed upon every five years, is set to expire in March.

The Japanese government has provisionally decided to allocate about 1.94 billion dollars for the cost in its budget bill for fiscal 2021 ahead of its negotiations with the incoming US administration led by President-elect Joe Biden. The sum is about the same level as this year's.

But Washington has been demanding that Tokyo shoulder more of the cost. The two sides will not reach a deal before the end of the year.

Japan goes through the process of deciding a draft budget for next fiscal year in December. It is unusual for discussions to be prolonged till the following year.

Britain will invite Australia, India and South Korea as guest nations to the Group of Seven summit it is chairing next year.

The Prime Minister's Office released a statement announcing the plan on Tuesday.

The statement reads the invitation delivers Prime Minister Boris Johnson's ambition to work with like-minded democracies to tackle common challenges.

The British government also disclosed that Johnson will visit India next month in a bid to increase the country's involvement in the Indo-Pacific region.

Britain's newspaper The Guardian reported Johnson has invited India to attend the G7 summit as one of three guest nations alongside South Korea and Australia as part of plans to transform the G7 into a broader grouping of 10 leading democracies capable of challenging China and other nations.

Britain is increasingly wary of China over its handling of Hong Kong. The government announced it will remove all equipment made by Huawei from Britain's 5G networks by 2027.

The World Health Organization is preparing to send a team of researchers to the Chinese city of Wuhan as early as next month to look into the origins of COVID-19.

A WHO spokesperson told NHK on Wednesday that the international team is working on logistical arrangements to travel to China as soon as possible, hopefully in January.

The research team also plans to investigate what happened at the beginning of the outbreak.

In July, the UN organization sent two officials to Beijing to arrange a survey in Wuhan. One of the officials, Peter Embarek, is an expert on animal-derived infectious diseases. He spoke to NHK earlier this month.
Embarek said the WHO needs to carry out a more detailed investigation of the first cases. He also pointed to the need to interview people to identify all the cases in and around Wuhan.

The Olympic Council of Asia has chosen Qatar's capital Doha as host of the 2030 Asian Games and Saudi Arabia's Riyadh as host of the 2034 Games.

The OCA held the vote at a general assembly meeting in Oman's capital, Muscat, on Wednesday.

The Asian Games --- the largest sports event in Asia --- are held every four years with 45 countries and territories in the region taking part.

Doha will host the games for the second time following 2006. The event will be held in Riyadh for the first time.

The OCA has already chosen China's Hangzhou as the host of the upcoming 2022 Games, and Japan's Aichi Prefecture and its capital Nagoya as co-hosts in 2026.

Key words : Australia dispute
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20201216_29/

Australia is appealing to the World Trade Organization as a trade dispute with China heats up. The move comes after Beijing slapped tariffs on imports of Australian barley.

Australia's trade minister, Simon Birmingham, said the 80.5-percent levy is unjustified. China started the tax in May, saying it wanted to protect its barley growers from unfairly cheap competition.

Birmingham said, "Australian industry should see this as being about Australia defending the values, operation and interests of Australian producers, but doing so in a calm, methodical and careful manner."

China's commerce ministry defended the tariff earlier this month. It said the move was taken after an objective investigation.

Ties between Canberra and Beijing have soured this year. In April, Australia called for an independent investigation into the origin of the coronavirus.

China responded by restricting imports of Australian goods, including wine and meat.

It is the first time for Australia to appeal to the WTO over the series of measures by Beijing.

China says a capsule from its lunar probe has returned with rock samples from the moon.

The China National Space Administration has announced that the return capsule from the unmanned Chang'e-5 probe landed in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region before dawn on Thursday, local time.

The probe was launched on November 24 and landed on the moon on December 1.

The state-run China Central Television showed a team using a crane to recover what appears to be a container holding the capsule.

The space administration had planned to collect about two kilograms of rock from the lunar surface and below the surface.
The capsule will be flown to a facility in Beijing for analysis.

China is the third country to collect lunar samples, following the United States and the former Soviet Union.

The last mission was undertaken 44 years ago, when the former Soviet Union launched the Luna 24 probe in 1976.

China considers lunar missions to be the key to its space program. Last year, it became the first country to land a probe on the moon's far side.

The United States is leading the Artemis program aimed at building an outpost to orbit the moon and sending astronauts to the moon again. Japan is one of the countries taking part in the program.
