Chinese President Xi Jinping has said democracy is "not the patent of a few countries," in an apparent reference to the West's efforts to pressure Beijing over its actions in Hong Kong and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Xi was speaking at an online meeting hosted by the Chinese Communist Party, which marked its 100th anniversary this month. China's state-run Xinhua news agency says leaders of more than 500 political parties and organizations from over 160 countries attended.

In his keynote speech, Xi stressed that China has developed under the Communist Party rule.

He said democracy is "the right of the people of all countries." He said, "If a country is democratic or not, it must be judged by the people of the country, not by a few people."

He also said that cooperation between countries "should not seek world hegemony through small-group politics," in an apparent allusion to the Western-led global political system.

He went on to say that "China will always be a member of the big family of developing countries and will unswervingly work to improve the representation and voice of developing countries."

In Myanmar, dozens of civilians have been killed in fresh clashes with military troops.

Local media report that the fighting began on Friday in villages in the northern region of Sagaing. They say the locals used homemade firearms against more than a hundred troops. More than 30 civilians died.

The state-run newspaper reported on Sunday that armed terrorists ambushed security forces on patrol investigating crimes, killing one member and wounding six.

A witness told NHK on the phone that the military troops were using artillery, including missiles and mortars.

He said, "The civilians were hit while they were running. Those who could run fled, but those who could not were left to die. The military troops were searching for those who were wounded by the artillery, and shot them dead on the spot."

The clashes have forced many people to flee their homes. The resident with whom we spoke says about 10,000 have fled to local forests and mountains.

Rescuers digging through piles of mud left by massive mudslides in a spa resort town southwest of Tokyo say they aren't giving up hope --- now four days after disaster struck.

More than 20 people remain unaccounted for. 7 people have died.

A wall of mud and debris rushed down this hill in Atami City on Saturday, damaging more than 120 houses. About a third of them were washed away.

About 1,700 rescue workers quickly moved in. They've carefully combed through muck and explored damaged buildings.

Now, the focus is on areas where residents are missing.

Atami's mayor says the search and rescue mission is not over. But he says teams will soon begin another important project.

Saito Sakae said, "The focus will gradually shift to rebuilding people's lives. That will include restoring the water supply, repairing roads, and figuring out ways to provide housing for evacuees."

Officials say the danger of another landslide has not yet passed, since more rain is in the forecast.
