North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency says the country's Academy of National Defense Science test-fired tactical guided missiles on Thursday.

KCNA's report on Friday also said "two tactical guided missiles precisely hit the target island."

South Korea's military stated on Thursday that the North fired two projectiles from South Hamgyong Province toward the Sea of Japan. It said it believes the projectiles were short-range ballistic missiles.

It is presumed that North Korea's announcement refers to these projectiles.

KCNA also said North Korea conducted the test-firing of a long-range cruise missile system on Tuesday. It added that two missiles "hit the target island" 1,800 kilometers away.

South Korean military officials said on Tuesday that the North apparently launched two cruise missiles. It is believed that the KCNA report refers to these missiles.

Hong Kong police say a total of 162 people have been arrested on suspicion of violating the territory's national security law since the legislation took effect in June 2020.

The commissioner of the police said at a news conference on Thursday that more than 100 of them have been charged.

Those arrested include 47 citizens who were later indicted on subversion charges for their involvement in unofficial primary elections ahead of a Legislative Council vote.

The arrestees also include several senior members of civic groups that, for years, organized memorials for the victims of the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

Six others, including the founder of the Apple Daily newspaper, Jimmy Lai, were indicted on charges of endangering national security by colluding with foreign forces. The newspaper, known for its critical stance toward Beijing, closed last June.

The police commissioner also said the hotline dedicated to possible national security law offenses had received over 230,000 calls from the public since it was launched in November 2020.

The Hong Kong government is planning new legislation to crack down on acts considered hostile toward Beijing.

The police commissioner said Hong Kong's security situation is set to stabilize but still warrants caution.

The European Union says it has launched a case at the World Trade Organization against China over its discriminatory trade practices against Lithuania.

The EU said in an announcement on Thursday that China's actions appear to be illegal under WTO rules.

It says China has significantly restricted trade with Lithuania since December and been pressuring EU companies that export to China not to use Lithuanian content.

China has been increasing pressure on Lithuania since the Baltic nation allowed Taiwan to open a representative office under its own name in November.

The European Commission announced last month a set of measures to counter what it calls "economic coercion" by third countries. They include tariff hikes and trade restrictions.

European Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis has called for the measures to be swiftly approved by EU member states and the European Parliament so they can be implemented soon.
