Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has called on China to resolve their differences peacefully, saying Beijing should curb the spread of "military adventurism."

Tsai delivered her New Year address at the presidential office in Taipei on Saturday.

Tsai strongly protested against China's "military incursions," which she said "are of no benefit to the preservation of regional peace and stability."

She said Taiwan's position was consistent and that it "will neither bow to pressure nor act rashly when we have support."

Tsai said Chinese authorities "should not misjudge the situation, and that they should stop the spread of military adventurism within their ranks."

Tsai added that "the use of military means is absolutely not an option" for resolving the differences between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. She warned that military clashes would deal a blow to economic stability.

The president also brought up the recent arrests of people in Hong Kong in connection with an online media outlet known for its critical stance against the Hong Kong government.

Tsai said the pursuit of democracy and freedom is not a crime, and that Taiwan's position in support of Hong Kong will not change.

She said Taiwan will cherish its "own hard-earned freedom and democracy even more deeply." She expressed resolve to "show the world that democratic Taiwan has the courage to step out from the shadow of authoritarian China."

People across Japan have paid their respects at shrines and temples to usher in the New Year.

Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture, central Japan, has been crowded since Saturday morning.

Visitors dressed warmly with the addition of face masks as they walked toward the worship hall under a cloudy winter sky. They tossed coins into an offering box and made wishes for 2022.

A 61-year-old woman said she had come to the shrine with her husband from Saga Prefecture. She said 2021 was a troublesome year due to the pandemic, and she was unable to meet friends and had to worry about social distancing.

She added she would be delighted if all her family could be happy and healthy this year.

In the town of Futaba, Fukushima Prefecture, where the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is located, many evacuees visited a shrine to pray for the recovery of their hometown.

All the town's residents remain in a state of evacuation since the nuclear accident at the plant in March 2011. Local officials aim to have the evacuation order lifted by June for areas around Futaba Station.

Shohatsu Shrine, which is close to the station, was damaged by the quake, but was restored in 2020.

Worshippers prayed for health and bought amulets and lucky charms.

A man in his fifties said he came to the shrine after seeing the first sunrise of the year in Futaba. He said he wished to return home as soon as possible.

He said he feels lonely as he sees fewer residents than before the disaster. He expressed hope that life in the town will be restored, and everyone can recover their peace of mind.

The world has said goodbye to 2021 and bid a cautious welcome to the new year amid the ongoing spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant.

New Year's Eve fireworks in Sydney, Australia, went ahead for a full 12 minutes. The event was shortened last year due to the pandemic. Popular tourist sites including the Opera House and Harbour Bridge exploded with color under the spectacular display.

Fireworks also illuminated high rises in one of world's financial centers, Hong Kong. Messages of greetings in different languages lit up a big screen near Victoria Bay.

New Year greetings were projected on the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa, in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Meanwhile in Britain, London's New Year's Eve celebrations in Trafalgar Square were canceled due to the rapid spread of Omicron.

In the United States, New York City is downsizing its annual countdown in Times Square. However, the public has been allowed to join the celebrations for the first time in two years.

Israel has begun offering a fourth shot of the coronavirus vaccine for elderly people and staff at care facilities, amid a resurgence of infections driven by the Omicron variant.

The Health Ministry on Friday announced the start of the rollout, citing health and safety risks to seniors in care facilities.

An expert panel of the Israeli government had earlier recommended that people aged 60 or older and medical workers receive a fourth dose. Fourth shots for those with weakened immune systems due to illness had already started on Thursday.

Israel has been conducting the world's fastest inoculation program. Nearly half of its population, or 4.24 million people, has received a third shot, including around 80 percent of people aged 60 or older.

Case numbers in Israel had previously declined, but the country has seen a new wave of infections since November last year. Health officials reported the daily count of infections on Thursday topped 5,000 for the first time in two months.
The government is also stepping up antivirus measures, such as limiting the number of people in stores.

North Korean media say leader Kim Jong Un has laid out a tactical direction for the country's foreign relations at a key ruling party meeting. No specific details were given about the country's policy toward the United States.

The Saturday edition of the ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on a speech delivered by Kim at the five-day plenary meeting of the party's Central Committee, which concluded Friday.

The paper says Kim set out a tactical direction to deal with the rapidly changing international environment, but did not elaborate on whether he mentioned the United States.

The paper also says Kim reiterated his determination to strengthen the country's defense capabilities as it faces an increasingly unstable military situation on the Korean Peninsula. However, no details were provided on Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.

Meanwhile, Kim reportedly said his country will continue implementing strict anti-coronavirus measures, calling them a priority national project.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency says Pyongyang is carefully monitoring conditions at home and abroad amid ongoing uncertainty over the pandemic.

A free trade pact signed by 15 Asia-Pacific countries takes effect on Saturday for ten of them, including Japan, China, Singapore and Australia.

The 15 signatories of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership are the ten members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, plus Japan, China, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

The pact will become effective in South Korea on February 1.

It's Japan's first economic partnership agreement with China, which is its largest trade partner, and South Korea, its third largest.

Japanese think-tank Mizuho Research & Technologies says that effective immediately, the new pact scraps tariffs on more than 16 percent of export items to China. It will remove tariffs on over 63 percent of items by the 11th year of its implementation. The pace of tariff removal will be moderate, compared to other economic partnership agreements.

Japan will be allowed to maintain tariffs on five agricultural items it regards as domestically important, including rice, beef and dairy products.

The RCEP will cover about 30 percent of the world's population and GDP after coming into effect in all of its 15 member nations.

The pact is expected to boost the economy in the region by expanding trade and strengthening supply chains there, which showed vulnerabilities amid the coronavirus pandemic.
