Taiwan has announced that it will soon lift import bans on some Japanese foods that have been in force since the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident.
The restrictions were imposed on produce from five prefectures.
Taiwan stopped importing all food products from Fukushima and the nearby prefectures of Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma and Chiba. The ban excluded alcoholic drinks.
In 2015, the authorities also started requiring proof of origin for food items from other prefectures.
Japan has been asking Taiwan to lift the regulations, calling them one-sided measures with no scientific grounds.
Taiwan will require test results showing that foods from the five prefectures meet its standards for radioactive substances. The produce will then undergo inspection by Taiwan officials.
Taiwan will also keep the proof of origin requirement in place for all prefectures.
Public opinion in Taiwan against lifting the ban on imported Japanese food is still strong.
Observers say Taiwan's decision is related to its wish to be a member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, or CPTTP by resolving the issue with Japan. Taiwan applied to join the free-trade pact in September.

The Hong Kong government has announced tighter anti-coronavirus measures to tackle a new surge of infections in the city, including restrictions on gatherings.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam told reporters on Tuesday that, from Thursday, a two-person limit on public gatherings will be reintroduced and a ban on groups at private premises of more than two families will be in place.
She said the fines for breaking the social distancing rules will be doubled to roughly 1,300 US dollars.
Residents will be required from February 24 to present proof of vaccination when visiting such facilities as department stores, supermarkets, and religious venues.
The city is also set to allow employers to fire employees refusing to get inoculated.
Hong Kong has seen a surge in infections since the beginning of this year. The daily tally began rising rapidly last Friday following the end of the Chinese New Year. The number hit a record high on Monday and again on Tuesday, both surpassing 600.

Japanese film "Drive My Car" has made history as the first movie from the country to be nominated for Best Picture at the US Academy Awards.
The film directed by Hamaguchi Ryusuke gets four nominations at the 94th awards, whose shortlist was announced on Tuesday.
He receives a nod for the best director Oscar, the first Japanese nominated since Kurosawa Akira in 1986.
Hamaguchi and his co-writer Oe Takamasa are nominated in the Adopted Screenplay category.
"Drive My Car" also got the nod for the International Feature Film category for non-English movies.
Based on a short story by Japanese author Murakami Haruki, the film centers on a stage actor and director who faces the secrets of his deceased wife after meeting a woman who works as his driver.
The film has already won many accolades, including the Best Screenplay Award at last year's Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture in the non-English language category last month.
US media report that "Drive My Car" was expected to be nominated for International Feature Film, but surprisingly scored nominations in major categories as well.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony on March 27 in Los Angeles.
