Foreign chiefs from Japan, the United States and South Korea have shared concerns over North Korea's repeated ballistic missile launches, saying they pose a threat to the peace and stability of the international community.
Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong met in Hawaii on Saturday, and agreed to step up security cooperation among the three countries to increase deterrence.
They confirmed the importance of strictly implementing the UN Security Council resolutions against North Korea, and agreed that their countries will closely coordinate on the Security Council's future responses, and deepen discussions about diplomatic efforts.
Blinken and Chung reportedly expressed support when Hayashi asked for continued cooperation on the issue of the Japanese nationals abducted by North Korean agents decades ago.
The ministers also discussed the situation surrounding Ukraine, and shared unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. They also agreed to continue to work closely together on the matter.
The top diplomats shared concerns over activities that undermine the rule-based international order, with China's assertive actions in mind.
They agreed to show strong opposition to unilateral actions, including attempts to change the status quo.
The ministers also agreed to cooperate in addressing issues of international concern, including responses to the coronavirus pandemic and climate change.
Hayashi told a joint news conference after the trilateral talks that the significance of cooperation among the three countries goes beyond responses to North Korea and is essential for the stability and peace of the region.
He said the three-way cooperation should also be strengthened among their leaders.

The foreign ministers of Japan and South Korea have discussed Japan's bid to have a group of primarily gold mines on Sado Island registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and his South Korean counterpart Chung Eui-yong talked for about 40 minutes in Hawaii on Saturday.
Chung protested Japan's move, insisting that people from the Korean Peninsula were forced to work in the mines during World War Two.
Hayashi told Chung that Japan cannot accept Seoul's claim, saying it is not based on facts.
He added that Japan will discuss the matter with the South Korean side in good faith.
Hayashi also urged Seoul to responsibly address the issues in relation with wartime labor and people referred to as wartime comfort women.
Chung expressed hope that travel between the two countries will return to the level it was at before the coronavirus pandemic. He asked for Japan's cooperation.
The ministers agreed to accelerate talks between diplomatic officials to improve the bilateral ties.

Countries are evacuating staff from their embassies in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv as a Russian invasion of the country becomes imminent.
Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne announced on Sunday that she has instructed embassy staff in Kyiv to suspend operations and evacuate.
The decision follows a deterioration of the situation as Russia builds up troops along its border with Ukraine.
The embassy staff will move to a temporary office set up in Lviv in western Ukraine, near its border with Poland.
The move follows that of the United States, which decided to evacuate almost all staff from its embassy in Kyiv on Saturday.
The UK evacuated some of its staff and their family members on January 24.
Meanwhile, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced on Saturday that it will suspend services to Ukraine.
The announcement came after the Dutch government advised its citizens not to travel to the country.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the risk of Russian military action in Ukraine is high and imminent, but a diplomatic solution remains possible.
Blinken told reporters in Hawaii on Saturday that "the risk of Russian military action is high enough," and "No one should be surprised if Russia instigates a provocation or incident."
He also warned, "If Moscow chooses the path of aggression and further invades Ukraine, the response from the United States and our allies and partners will be swift, it will be united, it will be severe."
Blinken added that the diplomatic path remains open, and he called on Russia to "de-escalate".
Blinken also said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had told him in a phone conversation on Saturday that Russia is "working on a response" to the paper that Washington sent more than two weeks ago proposing concrete areas for discussion.

The leaders of the United States and Russia have held a telephone conversation as military tensions grow over Ukraine.
The talks between Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin lasted for about an hour on Saturday.
Biden has warned that if Russia undertakes a further invasion of Ukraine, the United States together with its allies and partners will respond decisively and impose swift and severe costs on Russia.
The White House says Biden reiterated that a further Russian invasion of Ukraine would produce widespread human suffering and diminish Russia's standing.
A senior official of the Biden administration said it remains unclear whether Moscow is interested in achieving its objectives through diplomatic or military means. The official said there is a clear possibility that Russia will decide to take military action.
Meanwhile, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov says Biden explained his view on security guarantees, but it doesn't take into account key concerns of Russia. Those include NATO's further expansion.
The Kremlin official added that Putin will carefully study Washington's view and provide details of Moscow's reaction.
The two leaders have agreed to continue engagement of officials from both nations.
On the same day, French President Emmanuel Macron also held a telephone conversation with Putin on the Ukrainian issue.
Macron has conveyed Western nations' strong concern over a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine. Putin described that as "provocative speculations" by the West.
Macron and Putin have reaffirmed continued dialogue, such as talks between Russia and Ukraine mediated by France and Germany.

Russia's Defense Ministry says it summoned a military attache at the US Embassy in Moscow to protest what it called a violation of its territorial waters by a US Navy submarine.
The ministry said on Saturday that a nuclear-powered submarine belonging to the US Navy was spotted in the area of routine naval exercises of Russia's Pacific Fleet in the territorial waters near Urup Island of the Kuril Islands.
The ministry also said the US submarine ignored warnings to leave the waters. It added that the submarine departed after a Russian vessel used what it called "appropriate means" against the submarine. The ministry did not give details of the measures.
The ministry says it summoned a US military attache on Saturday and handed a note claiming that the US Navy's provocative actions posed a threat to Russia's national security.
A spokesperson for US Indo-Pacific Command told NHK that there is no truth to Russian claims of US Navy operations in Russia's territorial waters.
The spokesperson said the regional command will not comment on the precise location of its submarines, but its planes and vessels operate safely in international waters.
Russia's protest comes amid heightened tensions over Ukraine. Observers say the move is aimed at giving an impression that the US is threatening Russia's security.

Japan's government has announced that heavy snow will likely hit the Tokyo area and warned of possible traffic bottlenecks.
Weather officials forecast heavy snow in eastern and central Japan from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning.
The transport ministry is calling on people to avoid non-essential travel.
It is urging drivers to use snow tires or chains to avoid getting stuck in the snow or causing accidents.
When 10-centimeters of snow piled up in central Tokyo last month, many cars with normal tires got stuck on expressways or were involved in accidents.
The ministry says it may close down expressways and roads along expressways, depending on the snowfall.
Officials are also warning of disruption to public transport systems.
They are calling on commuters and students to watch out for delay or suspension of railway and bus services.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says it will release its decision regarding appeals for re-imposing an anti-doping suspension on Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva on Monday.
Fifteen-year-old Valieva is a member of the Russian Olympic Committee figure skating team. It won gold at the Team Event of the Beijing Olympics last Monday.
The International Olympic Committee, the World Anti-Doping Agency, or WADA, and the International Skating Union filed appeals with the CAS.
CAS says a panel of three arbitrators will hold a hearing by video-conference on Sunday.
It will announce a decision on Monday afternoon, the day before women's single figure skating starts. Valieva is one of the gold-medal favorites in that event.
She was provisionally suspended by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency after the International Testing Agency said last Tuesday that she tested positive for trimetazidine in a test she took in December. The substance, which is used to treat angina, is banned by WADA. That has prevented the team figure skating's medal ceremony scheduled on that day from happening.
Valieva later successfully challenged her suspension and the Russian Anti-Doping Agency lifted it.
