NHK has learned that a Japanese national in his 50s was detained in Shanghai in December.
Authorities, including the local Japanese Consulate-General, are gathering information as the man is believed to have been detained on spying charges.
They are also attempting to learn his health condition.
Multiple Japanese government sources say the man was detained for allegedly violating Chinese law.
Details have yet to be made known, but the sources say China's security authorities may suspect he has been engaged in espionage and other unlawful acts.
The enactment of anti-espionage legislation in 2014 led to a series of detentions of Japanese nationals the following year and after.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry says at least 15 others have been detained.
Of them, eight have been released or returned to Japan after completing their prison terms.
But sources say a man in his 70s who was serving a 12-year sentence died this month due to deteriorating health.

Foreign affairs chiefs of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will hold talks on Thursday.
Topics will include how to approach the Myanmar military as ASEAN seeks an immediate cessation of violence and a visit by a special envoy to Myanmar.
The meeting will take place in Cambodia, which holds the bloc's rotating chair. Some of the ministers will take part in the talks online.
The gathering was initially scheduled to take place in January, but was postponed after Cambodia clashed with other nations over its position on Myanmar.
Discussions are expected to include how to realize the "Five-Point Consensus" concerning Myanmar following the military coup in February last year.
The consensus was agreed to at an ASEAN summit-level meeting last year.
Among its proposals are an immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar and dialogue among all parties concerned mediated by an ASEAN special envoy.
Brunei, which assumed the ASEAN chairmanship last year, aimed to name its second foreign minister, Erywan Yusof, as the bloc's envoy to Myanmar.
But Myanmar's military turned down the offer.
The foreign ministers are expected to approve Cambodia's bid to have its Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn named ASEAN's envoy to Myanmar.
But the talks come after Myanmar's military turned down ASEAN's request that the country send a nonpolitical representative instead of a military-appointed foreign minister to the meeting.
Uncertainty looms over whether the ministers can reach a breakthrough despite Myanmar's absence in the talks.

A task force from the International Atomic Energy Agency has conducted its on-site inspection over the plan to release treated water into the sea from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan.
The team has experts from overseas, including Japan's neighboring countries China and South Korea. They are visiting Japan to review the safety of the plan this week.
The task force conducted an inspection at the plant on Tuesday. The plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company or TEPCO, disclosed a video of the inspection on Wednesday.
Water is used to cool molten nuclear fuel at the plant. It mixes with rain and groundwater that flows into damaged reactor buildings.
TEPCO is treating the water by filtering out most of the radioactive substances. But the filtered water still contains tritium.
The utility plans to discharge the treated water after diluting the tritium level to well below national standards.
In the video, team members watch workers checking radioactive substances in treated water.
The members, reportedly, also visited a construction site of the equipment to release treated water.
The team plans to hold a news conference on Friday after finishing its activity and intends to compile an interim report this year.

Southeast Asia is seeing a spike in new coronavirus cases, fueled by the Omicron variant.
Indonesia confirmed more than 57,000 new cases on Tuesday, the most ever. The daily count had been below 1,000 since last October, but surged last month due to the Omicron variant.
The government has tightened restrictions in Jakarta and elsewhere. It is encouraging remote work and limiting the number of customers at restaurants.
Thailand recorded over 16,000 new cases on Wednesday. The country has seen over 10,000 cases a day over the past week.
Singapore reported a record of more than 19,000 new cases on Tuesday. And on Wednesday, neighboring Malaysia topped 27,000 for the first time ever.

Vietnam says it will lift from March 15 almost all travel restrictions for foreign visitors that have been imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
The Vietnamese government announced the tourism resumption plan on Wednesday.
Under the new plan, incoming tourists will be required to meet certain conditions such as having proof of vaccination and a negative test result within 72 hours before departure.
The government says it will promptly design a new visa policy for foreign tourists. Before the coronavirus outbreak, the country had granted a visa waiver to visitors from Japan and some other countries.
Vietnam has allowed foreign tourists to visit limited destinations since November under a pilot program as part of its policy to ease restrictions.
The government changed course from strict anti-virus measures in October after seeing a significant decline in its economy following nationwide lockdowns and other restrictions.
The new announcement comes amid a surge in coronavirus cases in the country. Vietnam reported more than 30,000 daily new cases for the first time on Tuesday.

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has indicated that he will consider allowing foreign athletes into the country from March, in response to a request from the governing bodies of professional baseball and soccer.
Kishida expressed the intention at a meeting with Nippon Professional Baseball Commissioner Saito Atsushi and J.League Chairman Murai Mitsuru on Wednesday.
The officials asked Kishida to pay consideration to foreign players and their families who are unable to come to Japan due to coronavirus restrictions, as the start of the next season is approaching.
New foreign arrivals have been suspended, in principle, amid the spread of the Omicron variant, but the government now plans to ease the restrictions in phases, starting in March.
It is making arrangements to allow new foreign arrivals, with the exception of tourists, if they meet certain conditions. The daily cap on entrants, including foreigners, is likely to be raised from 3,500 to 5,000.
Kishida reportedly conveyed to Saito and Murai that he will consider allowing foreign players and their families into Japan from March.
Saito later told reporters that he was told the government will keep the restrictions in place until the end of this month, and the policy should be accepted.
He said he asked the prime minister to lift the entry ban soon after that.

The latest trade statistics show Japan's imports hit a record high in January, due mainly to soaring energy prices.
The Finance Ministry said on Thursday imports surged 39.6 percent from the same month a year earlier to more than 8.5 trillion yen or about 74 billion dollars.
That is the highest monthly figure in yen terms since comparable data became available in 1979.
Crude oil prices jumped 76 percent year-on-year. Coal and liquefied natural gas also became more expensive.
Meanwhile, exports rose 9.6 percent to over 6.3 trillion yen, or roughly 55 billion dollars, helped by shipments of steel products to South Korea.
That put last month's trade balance in the red by almost 2.2 trillion yen, or about 19 billion dollars. The country posted a trade deficit for the sixth month in a row.

The southern Chinese city of Guangzhou used lighted drones to help celebrate the Olympics at night. The event used a swarm of drones to form facial images of Olympic athletes, including Japanese figure skater Hanyu Yuzuru.
The Guangzhou municipal government organized the event near the city's landmark Canton Tower on Valentine's Day to cheer on athletes competing in the Beijing Olympics.
A total of 520 lighted drones maneuvered to create images in the night sky. They drew the Beijing Olympic mascot and faces of Chinese medalists, such as freestyle skier Eileen Gu.
Hanyu was the only non-Chinese depicted by the drones.
The Japanese skater is highly popular in China, and many Chinese fans rooted for him as he tried for his third consecutive Olympic gold.
Chinese social media was abuzz with postings about the event.
One user expressed surprise at seeing Hanyu's image and described it as "cool."
Another expressed hope that Chinese fans' love would reach Yuzuru.
