Japanese weather officials say Tropical Storm Meari will likely make landfall on Saturday in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan, or the neighboring region of Kanto.
The officials say rain and wind are intensifying, particularly on the Pacific side of eastern Japan. Heavy rain is forecast for the area through late Saturday.
They warn of landslides, flooding, swollen rivers, and high waves. They also urge caution against lightning strikes, gusty winds and tornadoes.
The Meteorological Agency says as of 9 a.m. on Saturday, the tropical storm was 130 kilometers southwest of Omaezaki City, Shizuoka Prefecture, and moving north-northeast at about 20 kilometers per hour.
The central atmospheric pressure was 1,000 hectopascals with maximum winds of about 72 kilometers per hour near its center.
The approaching storm brought 233.5 millimeters of rain to Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture and 208.5 millimeters to Shizuoka City in the 24-hour period through 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
In the 24-hour period through Sunday noon, up to 300 millimeters of rainfall is expected in Shizuoka Prefecture, 200 millimeters in the Kanto-Koshin region and 150 millimeters in the Izu island chain.
Bands of heavy rain clouds may develop in the Tokai region including Shizuoka, bringing localized downpours.
The storm is disrupting air transport. As of 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Skymark Airlines had cancelled 30 flights, Japan Airlines 23 flights, All Nippon Airways 10 flights and Star Flyer two flights.
Parts of the Tohoku region in northeastern Japan have also been hit by heavy rain due to a weather front.
In the 24-hour period through Sunday morning, up to 120 millimeters of rain is forecast in northern Tohoku, and 100 millimeters in southern Tohoku.

A weather front hovering over northern Japan together with a mass of damp air is bringing intense rainfall to the northern Tohoku region and the Hokuriku region.
Hourly precipitation of about 100 millimeters reportedly fell in parts of Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, on Saturday afternoon.
The rain could intensify after briefly weakening. People are advised to remain vigilant against landslides and flooding and to evacuate to safer places if necessary.
Northern Tohoku has already been lashed by record rainfall in recent days. There are concerns that any more rain could cause massive landslides.
The Meteorological Agency is calling for continued caution against landslides, flooding of low-lying areas and overflowing of rivers as well as lightning strikes, gusty winds and hail.

New York health officials say they have detected the virus which causes polio in the city's wastewater.
New York City and state health authorities said on Friday the discovery suggests the virus may be circulating locally.
Polio infects mostly infants and toddlers and can cause permanent paralysis of the arms and legs. As the disease is often asymptomatic, officials suspect it may have been excreted by people who don't realize they have been infected.
The investigation began after a polio case was reported in New York state last month. The disease had not been confirmed in the United States since 2013.
Polio infection can be prevented by a vaccine. But in some parts of New York state, the inoculation rate of two-year-olds is around 60 percent. Health officials are urging those who are unvaccinated to get their shots.
Data from the World Health Organization and others show polio has been largely eradicated since the introduction of the vaccine. But the virus was recently detected in sewage in the British capital of London.

French firefighters say a massive wildfire near Bordeaux has forced roughly 10,000 residents to evacuate.
France has had hardly any rainfall since July. Hot, dry conditions have ignited a series of wildfires, mainly in the country's south.
The fire near Bordeaux in the southwest has so far consumed 7,400 hectares since it started several days ago.
Firefighters from Germany and Romania arrived on Friday to help battle the blaze in the wine-making region.
The flames are closing in on some of the vineyards, where harvesting is due to start next month.
A fire department spokesperson said the Gironde region, home to Bordeaux vineyards, has never been so hot and dry. The official predicted that it would take some time to contain the blaze, even with the use of massive manpower and firefighting resources.

The British government has declared a drought across wide areas of England amid a persistent heatwave. Officials say they are now considering restrictions on water usage.
The measure, which includes London, is the first declaration of its kind in four years. It comes after England recorded its driest July since 1935.
Temperatures have recently soared nationwide, and the mercury in the capital this weekend is expected to once again top 35 degrees Celsius.
Saving water is a major challenge for the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, southwest London. The lawns at the UNESCO World Heritage site have turned brown, and the tropical plants are being affected.
An official says the impact of the heatwave will last for another month or two. He says Kew Gardens will need to adapt to climate change over the coming decades.

Acclaimed author Salman Rushdie, who achieved notoriety in the Islamic world for his 1988 novel "The Satanic Verses," has been stabbed at a literary event in the US state of New York.
Police say a man ran on stage on Friday and attacked the Indian-born novelist as he was about to give a lecture.
Rushdie was stabbed in the neck and torso and taken to hospital for surgery. US media outlets quote his book agent as saying the novelist is on a ventilator and will likely lose one eye.
Police detained the assailant, who is in his 20s.
"The Satanic Verses" sparked outrage among some Muslims, who viewed it as blasphemous.
Iran's then supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a religious edict, calling for Rushdie's death.
In the years that followed, other people involved in the publication of the book came under attack.
In 1991, Igarashi Hitoshi, who translated the work into Japanese, was killed at the University of Tsukuba, north of Tokyo, where he worked.

Five Chinese state-owned firms announced on Friday that they are delisting from the New York Stock Exchange, citing tougher US regulations.
They include PetroChina, Sinopec and China Life Insurance. All are on a list of Chinese entities that have been warned of possible delisting, should they fail to fully show their auditing records to US regulators.
Private companies on the list include online retail giant Alibaba Group Holdings.
Beijing is also strengthening oversight of Chinese firms whose stocks are traded abroad. Authorities suggested on Friday that they do not believe the decision by the five entities will affect the overseas listings of others.
Analysts say the regulations could further decouple the US and Chinese economies.
