In what could be an effective announcement of withdrawal, Russia's defense ministry says its troops will be regrouped from a key strategic area in eastern Ukraine amid fierce counter-offensives by Ukrainian forces. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pledged that Ukraine will continue its counter-offensive.

Russian officials announced on Saturday that Russian troops will be regrouped from Izyum areas in the Kharkiv region to strengthen operations in the Donetsk region.

Ukraine's security service said on the same day that Ukrainian troops had taken control of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region, which lies on Russia's supply routes to the Donbas frontline.

Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine's presidential office, posted photos on social media showing Ukrainian forces outside Izyum.

Izyum is believed to be an important base for Russia to deploy and deliver supplies to its troops in the Donbas region. If Ukraine retakes control of Izyum, it will likely deal a heavy blow to Russia.

Zelenskyy notes in a video released on Saturday that as part of active actions since the beginning of September, about 2,000 square kilometers of Ukraine's territory have been liberated.

He does not specifically mention Izyum. But he says that the nearby Donetsk region will be liberated.

A survey shows that more than 20 percent of Japanese companies doing business in Russia have either withdrawn or suspended activity in the country.

The Japan External Trade Organization surveyed 202 companies in late August, more than six months after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine. One hundred and seven firms responded.

Four-point-seven percent of them said that they had left, or have decided to leave Russia.

Seventeen-point-eight percent said that they had totally suspended their operations.

The total is 22.5 percent, a sharp increase from 6.2 percent in a similar survey conducted in late March.
The main reasons for withdrawing were disruptions or delays in logistics and reputational risks.

But 31.8 percent of the respondents said they had only partially suspended their operations, while 45.8 percent said their business in Russia had not changed.

Many companies apparently are finding it difficult to withdraw, considering how much they have already invested.

JETRO says more Japanese companies will likely decide to withdraw from Russia, as the conflict drags on, and it becomes increasingly difficult for businesses to sit idly by and watch as the situation develops.

Sunday marks 10 years since the Japanese government purchased some of the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture from a private Japanese owner.

The government acquired ownership of three Senkaku islands in the East China Sea on September 11, 2012. It cited as a reason the need to maintain and manage the Senkaku Islands peacefully and stably on a long-term basis.

Japan controls the islands. China and Taiwan claim them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory, in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.

Beijing reacted sharply to the transfer of ownership. Chinese government vessels have since entered Japanese territorial waters around the islands repeatedly.

In recent years, the Chinese ships have become larger and more heavily equipped with weapons.

The number of scrambles conducted by Japan's Self-Defense Forces against Chinese aircraft has more than quadrupled over the past 10 years. Japanese fighter jets were scrambled against Chinese planes 722 times during the last fiscal year, which ended in March.

Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa told reporters on Friday that the situation remains unpredictable. He added that the government is seriously concerned. Hayashi said Japan will stay vigilant and deal with the situation calmly and resolutely.

Last month, some ballistic missiles that were fired by the Chinese military during a drill fell into Japan's exclusive economic zone. The incident has further strained relations between the two countries.

The Chinese military conducted the exercises around Taiwan after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei.

Meanwhile, Japan and China will mark the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties on September 29. Japan is working to improve ties.

The head of Japan's National Security Secretariat, Akiba Takeo, and China's top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, agreed to try to establish constructive and stable bilateral relations last month.

Weather officials in Japan warn a powerful typhoon is approaching the southern prefecture of Okinawa. They say Typhoon Muifa could bring strong winds and rough seas to some areas.

The Meteorological Agency says Muifa was moving northwest over waters south of Okinawa on Sunday morning, Japan time. It says the storm was traveling at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour.

The agency expects Muifa to maintain its strength as it moves north. Authorities say it is likely the storm will approach the Sakishima Islands as early as Monday.

They say fierce winds may start lashing the area on Sunday evening. Agency officials have issued a warning for strong winds in the Ishigaki area.

Officials point out the storm is moving slowly. They say that means the rough conditions will last for an extended period of time. They also say waves may reach a height of 10 meters around the Yaeyama and Miyakojima regions.

Officials of Japan and Indonesia have attended a ceremony to mark the construction of an extension of the subway in Jakarta.

The first subway in Indonesia began its operation in 2019 with Japanese technological cooperation and a yen loan. The line extends about 16 kilometers and connects the center of the capital and the south.

Construction is underway to extend the system to the north for about 5.8 kilometers.

The entire line is scheduled to begin operating in six years.

Competition over infrastructure projects in Indonesia has grown fierce in recent years.

China is building a high-speed railway connecting Jakarta and Bandung after winning an intense bidding competition with Japan in 2015.

South Korea also decided this year to start research on a metro railway construction.

Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Kanasugi Kenji attended Saturday's ceremony. He said investment from Japan creates local jobs and promotes technical transfers, in the marked contrast to investment from other countries.

He expressed hopes for Japan to work with Indonesia to boost its infrastructure exports.

Britain's new Prince of Wales says he will do all that he can to support King Charles III.

In his first statement as the Prince of Wales, William, the King's eldest son, said that Queen Elizabeth was by his side at his happiest moments and during the saddest days of his life.

He said that it will be some time before the reality of life without "Grannie" will truly feel real.

William stated, "My grandmother famously said that grief was the price we pay for love. All of the sadness we will feel in the coming weeks will be testament to the love we felt for our extraordinary Queen."

The Prince of Wales also said, "I will honour her memory by supporting my father, The King, in every way I can."
