Former Japanese professional wrestling star and ex-lawmaker Antonio Inoki has died at the age of 79. Inoki, known for his many visits to North Korea to meet top officials, died from heart failure on Saturday morning.
He started his career as a professional wrestler at the age of 17, and founded a professional wrestling promotion company, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, in 1972.
One of his high-profile matches is the 1976 fight against the late boxing legend Muhammad Ali. The wrestler fought Ali in Tokyo, going the full 15 rounds with the then-heavyweight world champ in the match, which ended in a draw.
Inoki was first elected as an upper house Diet member in 1989, and a second time in 2013.
Inoki's mentor, Rikidozan, also a very popular wrestler, was from an area now part of North Korea.
Inoki visited North Korea several times and met top officials in his efforts to improve relations between Japan and the North.
Those officials included Kim Yong Il, a close aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The meeting took place in November 2013, when Inoki visited the country to take part in an event for sports exchanges.
Inoki organized an international pro-wrestling competition in Pyongyang in 2014. About 20 wrestlers and martial arts practitioners, including those from Japan, the United States and France, took part. The event drew more than 10,000 spectators, who filled the venue.
Inoki visited North Korea for three years in a row from 2016 through 2018 to meet North Korea's ruling Workers' Party vice chairman, Ri Su Yong. He said he brought up the issue of Japanese nationals abducted to the North during his meetings with Ri.

South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol says the country will step up joint exercises and strengthen its alliance with the United States to deal with North Korea's provocations and threats.
Yoon was speaking at an event marking Armed Forces Day at South Korea's military headquarters in Gyeryongdae, south of Seoul, on Saturday.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles eastward from Sunan, near the capital Pyongyang, between 6:45 and 7:03 a.m. on Saturday. It was the fourth launch in a week.
They said the missiles traveled about 350 kilometers, reaching an altitude of about 30 kilometers, at a top speed of Mach 6 -- six times the speed of sound.
North Korea also fired two short-range ballistic missiles from Sunan toward the Sea of Japan on Wednesday.
The South Korean president said Pyongyang has not abandoned its "obsession with nuclear weapons and missiles" over the past 30 years, despite opposition from the international community.
Yoon went on to say that North Korea should make the decision to denuclearize for true peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.
Yoon warned that if the North attempts to use nuclear weapons, it would face the "resolute and overwhelming response" of the South Korea-US alliance.

A US research group says North Korea may be preparing to launch a submarine-launched ballistic missile, or SLBM.
The group, 38 North, released an analysis of satellite imagery on Friday showing a shipyard in the port city of Sinpho in North Korea's eastern province of South Hamgyong.
The researchers say the imagery captured on Thursday shows "a large, white cylindrical object" along with "a possible truck-mounted crane."
They say the object is roughly 11.5 meters long and 1.4 meters wide, "similar to the Pukguksong-3" SLBM.
The group warns its findings could indicate preparations for a forthcoming test.
South Korean media reported last week that signs of preparations for firing an SLBM had been observed in Sinpho.

North Korean media says the country's leader Kim Jong Un expressed support for what he called China's reunification efforts, apparently referring to Beijing's stance on Taiwan.
North Korea's ruling party newspaper reported on Saturday that Kim sent a congratulatory message to Chinese President Xi Jinping for China's national foundation day, observed on October 1.
The Rodong Sinmun quotes Kim as saying, "Our party, government and people will invariably support and encourage the Chinese party, government and people in the just struggle to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and realize its reunification."
Xi is expected to seek an unprecedented third term as party leader at the Communist Party National Congress opening on October 16.
Kim stressed he would work with Xi to deepen the traditional relations of friendship between his country and China and to defend peace and stability in Asia and the rest of the world.
Kim is believed to be seeking closer ties with China, its strongest backer, as the United States strengthens cooperation with Japan and South Korea through joint defensive exercises.

Officials in the US state of Florida say at least 21 people may have died due to Hurricane Ian.
Weather officials say Ian made landfall again in the southern state of South Carolina on Friday after crossing the Florida Peninsula from west to east and moving out to the Atlantic.
The storm inundated and destroyed homes in Florida.
Aerial footage from a hard-hit coastal area shows heavily damaged roads and buildings swept away with only their foundations left.
President Joe Biden told reporters Florida is seeing some of the most severe damage in US history.
He pledged his full commitment to rescuing people and providing support for those affected by the disaster.
Local authorities are assessing the damage and checking whether anyone in hard-hit areas is stuck in their homes.

The United States and Russia have accused each other of sabotaging two undersea gas pipelines linking Russia and Germany, causing leaks.
The gas leaks from the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea were confirmed in late September.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a speech on Friday said, "The Anglo-Saxons believe sanctions are no longer enough and now they have turned to sabotage."
US President Joe Biden spoke to reporters at the White House the same day and called the gas leakage a "deliberate act of sabotage." He accused the Russians of pumping out disinformation and lies and said, "Just don't listen to what Putin is saying."
The Nord Stream pipeline system is an important energy infrastructure for Germany and other European nations.
Biden expressed his intention to send divers to find out what caused the leakage.
Biden has repeatedly stressed his determination to defend every inch of NATO territory.
NATO maintains that the military alliance will take firm action against any intentional attack on the key infrastructure of its member nations.

Fashion models wearing the Issey Miyake label have taken to the runway for the first time since the celebrated Japanese designer's death in August.
The show took place on Friday at Paris Fashion Week, which kicked off on Monday.
The show began with a picture of Miyake projected on screen with the words, "I believe there is hope in design." The audience erupted in applause.
The models wore garments created from a single piece of cloth, one of the late designer's signature concepts.
The show finale, featuring a piano and dance performance, drew cheers from the audience.
A woman from Los Angeles said she was moved to tears.
The collection was designed by Kondo Satoshi, who worked with Miyake for many years.
He said he will never forget his boss saying, "Believe in yourself and move forward."
Kondo added that he wants to keep on emulating Miyake by making clothes that evoke "joy and surprise."
