The death toll from an explosion inside a coal mine in northern Turkey has risen to 41.

The blast occurred on Friday beneath the northern town of Amasra.

Local authorities say 41 people have been confirmed dead and 11 others are being treated in hospital.

Footage on local media shows people huddled around the entrance to the mine, and rescued workers being rushed on stretchers to ambulances.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived at the scene on Saturday and said that he doesn't want to see deficiencies or unnecessary risk, adding that an investigation would reveal those responsible for the blast.
In 2014, an explosion at a coal mine in the western Turkish town of Soma killed 301 people. The disaster sparked protests across the nation against Erdogan's government.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to take back all of Ukraine's territory from Russia in a speech on a day dedicated to veterans and fallen heroes.

He marked Defenders Day on Friday at a rally in Kyiv. He observed a moment of silence for those who died defending Ukraine. He told those present, "We liberated the north of our country from the Russian invaders. We are liberating the entire east."

He said, "We will return the Ukrainian flag to all our cities and communities in the south of the country. We will return our Crimea," and, "We will restore the territorial integrity of our state."

The previous day, Ukraine's government said its armed forces have liberated 627 settlements from Russian occupation in the eastern and southern regions. It said 502 settlements have been liberated in the eastern region of Kharkiv, 43 in the eastern region of Donetsk, seven in the Luhansk region, also in the east, and 75 in the southern region of Kherson.

The US defense department announced on Friday that Washington will provide additional military assistance worth 725 million dollars for Ukraine.

The package includes additional ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS, as well as artillery rounds and more than 200 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles.

The Pentagon issued a statement saying, "The United States has delivered unprecedented security assistance to Ukraine and will continue to work with allies and partners to ensure Ukraine has the support it needs."

Ukraine's Center for Civil Liberties, the recipient of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, says it will seek justice for at least 680 Ukrainian civilian victims of Russian war crimes.

Members of the human rights organization held a news conference in the capital, Kyiv, on Friday.

The organization said the results of its survey show at least 686 civilians were detained and mistreated by Russian forces.

Of them, 265 were released, but 11 died and 410 remain in custody.

A woman who was detained in the northern province of Chernihiv in March and released last month attended the conference.

She spoke about having been forced to sing Russia's national anthem every day at a detention facility. She also said she witnessed the harassment of a Ukrainian woman whose hair was shaved off.

The center's executive director, Oleksandra Romantsova, said those illegally detained by Russia must be released unconditionally.

She said her organization will continue to seek justice for victims of Russian war crimes.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has held talks with leaders of nations friendly to Moscow amid military setbacks in Ukraine.

Putin is in Kazakhstan's capital Astana to attend a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States, or CIS, made up of former Soviet republics on Friday.

At the meeting, he said some countries are trying to forget that the Soviet Union saved humanity from Nazi Germany.

He proposed that 2025 be designated as a year of peace and unity in the fight against Nazism. Russia marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two that year.

On Thursday, Putin held separate talks with at least six leaders, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Putin is apparently trying to show that Russia is maintaining ties with nations that are friendly to it, and also to reaffirm his grip on the countries he sees as part of Russia's sphere of influence.

He is expected to hold a news conference on Friday after the CIS meetings.

The Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, said on Thursday that Ukrainian and Russian troops are engaging in fierce battles in the southern region of Kherson, as Ukrainians try to recapture territory.

The institute also said damage to the bridge connecting Russia and Crimea continues to impede the movement of Russian supplies and personnel to southern Ukraine.

It added that the Russian-appointed leader of Kherson, Vladimir Saldo, called for the evacuation of civilians to southern Russia to protect them from missile strikes.

The British defense ministry said in its intelligence report on Friday that pro-Russian forces have made tactical advances towards the town of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region.

But the ministry also said that there have been few, if any, other settlements seized by Russian or separatist forces since early July.

It said forces led by the private Russian military company Wagner Group have achieved some localized gains in the Donbas region, and that Wagner likely remains heavily involved in the fighting in Bakhmut.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in Kazakhstan on Thursday on the sidelines of a regional summit.

At the onset of the talks, the Russian leader thanked Erdogan for previously brokering a deal to resume grain exports from Ukraine's Black Sea ports.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russian media the two leaders spoke alone for a long time. He said they did not discuss ways to resolve the conflict.

All the while, Russian forces continue firing missiles into Ukrainian cities. Officials say one struck a condominium in Mykolaiv. At least seven people are either dead or missing. Authorities also say Iranian-made kamikaze drones have hit infrastructure in the Kyiv region.

But Ukrainian forces are maintaining a counteroffensive in the east and south. Experts at a US think tank say they liberated five settlements in the Kherson region on Wednesday.

British intelligence officials suggest Russian troops could be preparing for heavy fighting in the city of Kherson, including the evacuation of civilians.

An independent media outlet in Russia says more than 90,000 of the country's troops have either died, been injured or gone missing. It quoted sources close to the Kremlin. Last month, Moscow claimed the death toll was under 6,000.

North Korea says it conducted artillery firing on Friday to send a "clear warning" to South Korea, and vowed to take further "overwhelming military countermeasures."

The South Korean military announced that the North fired about 90 shells toward the Sea of Japan on Friday afternoon from the southeastern province of Kangwon. It said the North also fired around 300 shots toward the Yellow Sea from the southwestern province of South Hwanghae. The shelling followed the launch of a short-range ballistic missile by Pyongyang earlier in the day.

A spokesperson for the General Staff of the North's People's Army issued a statement on Saturday through the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

The statement says the North fired off multiple rocket launchers as a warning after detecting artillery fire by the South.

It says the action was aimed at sending another clear warning against provocations by what it calls "the enemies."

It demands that the South Korean military stop at once its "reckless provocation" inciting military tensions.

The statement says the North Korean military "will never allow any provocation by the enemies escalating tension on the Korean Peninsula but take thorough and overwhelming military countermeasures."

The South Korean military is scheduled to start regular training drills on Monday. The US military will be partially involved. Seoul is stepping up security against possible reactions by the North.

The Indonesian government has concluded that the use of tear gas was the main cause of a stampede at a soccer match on October 1.

Authorities say 132 people have been confirmed dead, and about 600 people were injured.

The stadium is located in Malang, East Java province. Police fired tear gas when fans of the losing team stormed the pitch.

Coordinating security minister Mahfud MD said in a news conference on Friday that a special task force reported its findings to President Joko Widodo.

The team analyzed footage from 32 surveillance cameras at the stadium.

Mahfud gave accounts of what was observed. He said a person helping someone who was having trouble breathing was sprayed with tear gas and died.

He says another person who went back inside the stadium to help a friend was trampled to death.

The minister said the team concluded that the use of tear gas resulted in multiple deaths.

The police have said that six people, including three police officers, will face criminal charges for ordering the use of tear gas.

Under-fire British Prime Minister Liz Truss has made a dramatic U-turn by deciding not to freeze a planned corporate tax increase. She has also sacked her finance minister less than 40 days into office.

At a news conference on Friday, she said, "We need to act now to reassure the markets of our fiscal discipline."

Truss also said Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng has been replaced by former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Truss seeks to tackle record inflation by promoting economic growth through major tax cuts. Her administration also plans to provide financial support to households and businesses struggling with rising energy costs.

This is not her first U-turn. On October 3, Truss reversed course on a plan to lower the top rate of income tax after being criticized as giving preferential treatment to the wealthy.

Members of both the opposition and ruling Conservative Party are questioning whether Truss is fit for office.

But she vowed not to resign, saying, "I want to deliver a low-tax, high-wage, high-growth economy. It is what I was elected by my party to do, that mission remains."

In a survey this week, 23 percent of respondents supported the Conservatives. That's far behind the 51 percent who backed the Labour party.
