Russian forces continued their massive missile attacks on Ukrainian cities on Saturday, killing at least five people in the eastern city of Dnipro.

The governor of the eastern region of Dnipropetrovsk wrote on social media that a Russian missile struck a high-rise residential building in Dnipro, leaving at least five dead and about 60 others wounded, including 12 children.

A Russian strike was also confirmed in the capital, Kyiv.
The governor of the western region of Lviv reported that a critical infrastructure facility was attacked.

Ukrainian forces announced that they had shot down 25 of 38 missiles fired by Russians.

Moscow unleashed massive attacks across Ukraine on the eve of the New Year, causing many casualties.

Russia's assault on Saturday came after its defense ministry announced on Wednesday that General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov was appointed as commander of all Russian troops fighting Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised in a social media post that everyone involved in this terror will be found and held accountable.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak vowed to provide the British Army's Challenger 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine as part of the UK's additional military aid to the country.

Sunak made the pledge in telephone talks with Zelenskyy on Saturday.

The Telegraph newspaper reported that a squadron of 14 tanks will be sent to Ukraine in the coming weeks.
Zelenskyy has been asking for tanks with high offensive capabilities.

So far, Poland and Czech Republic have responded to the call by sending Soviet-era tanks. The Challenger 2 will be the first Western tanks to be deployed in Ukraine.

The Russian embassy in London released a statement that read, "the United Kingdom seems to be intent on reaffirming its status as top NATO Member State in terms of arming Kyiv and escalating the conflict."

Iran has executed a former defense official sentenced to death on charges of spying for Britain.

Iran's judiciary announced on Saturday the execution of Alireza Akbari, a former Iranian deputy defense minister.

Akbari was arrested on suspicion of undermining Iran's national security by spying for the British intelligence service, MI6.

The Iranian judiciary said in a statement that Akbari had leaked classified information on Iran's internal affairs, diplomacy, and national defense in return for British citizenship and a large amount of money.

The leak was said to have included information on Iran's top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was assassinated in 2020.
Fakhrizadeh was believed to have played a major role in the country's nuclear development.

Britain's Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said in a statement that the execution is "a barbaric act that deserves condemnation in the strongest possible terms."

Cleverly also said, "Through this politically motivated act, the Iranian regime has once again shown its callous disregard for human life. He stressed, "This will not stand unchallenged."

Cleverly added that the British government will summon the Iranian Charge d'Affaires to make clear its disgust at Iran's actions. The UK's foreign secretary has temporarily recalled the UK's ambassador to Iran.

Relations have deteriorated as Iran claims Britain has incited anti-government protests in the country, while London condemns Iranian authorities for sentencing protesters to death.

The Chinese government has appointed a top security official in Hong Kong as the chief of its Liaison Office in the territory.

Zheng Yanxiong has been the director of the Office for Safeguarding National Security set up under the 2020 National Security Law for Hong Kong.

Zheng is also being appointed as an adviser to the Committee for Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong, which assesses the security situation in the territory and draws up policies.

Under the national security law, Hong Kong's Chief Executive nominally serves as the head of the committee, which is under the supervision of the central government in Beijing.

Zheng will in effect supervise Chief Executive John Lee.

Zheng has maintained a hardline stance as the chief of the security agency in Hong Kong, cracking down on antigovernment protests for more than two years.

His promotion to the head of the Chinese government's top representative office in Hong Kong signals Beijing's intention to tighten its control over the territory.

Brazilian police have arrested former justice minister Anderson Torres, a close ally of recently defeated President Jair Bolsonaro.

Torres was in charge of public security of the capital, Brasilia, when government buildings came under attack on January 8.

About 4,000 Bolsonaro supporters broke into and vandalized the Congress and other buildings, including the presidential palace. More than 1,300 people have been arrested.

Police arrested Torres on Saturday when he returned to Brazil from the United States.

Torres is reportedly suspected of intentionally failing to act to stop the capital attack despite having knowledge of the plan. He left the country before the riot.

Local police say they found a draft decree in Torres' home overturning the results of a Bolsonaro loss in the October presidential election.

Torres wrote on his Twitter account that he had always acted ethically and legally, and that he believes the truth will prevail.

Prosecutors are expected to question Torres in connection with the former president's alleged involvement in the riot.

Five more pages of classified documents have been found at US President Joe Biden's home in Delaware.

The White House noted the discovery in a statement Saturday. The Justice Department had already appointed a special counsel to investigate Biden's handling of classified files based on previous finds of such items at his home and private office.

The classified documents are from the time when Biden was vice president under President Barack Obama.

The White House says that all the documents have been handed to the Justice Department.

The first such classified items were found in November last year before the mid-term election. The Biden administration didn't comment on the matter immediately, waiting until after news media reported the discovery.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has said the administration will continue to cooperate with the probe.

A Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer is being towed to a dock after being stranded for five days in western Japan.

The Inazuma was near an island in Yamaguchi Prefecture in the Seto Inland Sea on Tuesday when it became unable to navigate on its own.

Part of a blade from one of the ship's propellers had broken off and it was leaking oil.

The hole was covered and the leakage stopped. The Inazuma is now on its way to the dockyard. It is expected to arrive on Monday.

The Japan Coast Guard believes the ship veered off its regular route and hit the shallows.
It will further inspect the vessel as part of the investigation into a possible violation of the traffic safety law.
