Now, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has hit back at the US Defense Secretary for criticizing Beijing over Taiwan and the South China Sea at a security conference. The backlash came the day after Hegseth's speech on Saturday at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.
A spokesperson for China's foreign ministry says the country deplores and firmly opposes Hegseth's remarks and has protested strongly to the US.
The spokesperson describes the Taiwan question as entirely China's internal affair, adding no country is in a position to interfere.
The spokesperson also criticizes Washington over the South China Sea, saying the US is the primary factor that is hurting the peace and stability of the region. Last week, Beijing launched another protest with Washington over US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's announcement that the US would begin revoking student visas for Chinese nationals.
Myanmar's military extends ceasefire until June 30
And Myanmar's ruling military has announced the extension of a ceasefire with pro-democracy forces until June 30. The announcement was made on Saturday. Both sides separately declared a temporary ceasefire after a major earthquake struck central Myanmar in March. The military says March's quake has left more than 3,700 people dead and over 5,000 injured. The aim of the ceasefire was to prioritize relief efforts. Fighting has continued, said the military coup in 2021. The military says it decided on the latest extension to speed up the reconstruction and rehabilitation of affected areas. But a source from the pro democracy camp told NHK that the military ceasefire declaration is false and unacceptable as the military is attacking schools, hospitals and other places where people gather. In May, the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations issued a statement calling for the extension and expansion of the ceasefire in Myanmar. But it remains uncertain whether the truce will hold, as fighting appears to be ongoing.
Hamas submits its response to US ceasefire proposal
And as fighting continues between Israel and Hamas, the Islamic group has responded to a ceasefire plan proposed by the United States. The proposal reportedly calls for a 60-day truce in exchange for Hamas releasing a total of 10 hostages on two occasions. A White House spokesperson says the proposal has already been accepted by Israel. Hamas presented new conditions regarding the hostage release. Arab media outlets say Hamas insists that 10 hostages should be released in three batches. US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff Calls the response by Hamas totally unacceptable, saying it takes the process backwards. Witkoff is urging Hamas to accept the proposal as the basis for talks, saying it is the only way to secure a 60-day ceasefire deal in the coming days. Now, meanwhile, the Israeli military has continued attacks in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian health authorities said on Saturday that over the past 24 hours, 60 people had been killed. A rally was held in Israel's largest commercial city of Tel Aviv.
Participants called on Israel and Hamas to reach an agreement as soon as possible to realize a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
I want the hostages to come back now, yesterday. The ceasefireI want it the world to stop as well very much. I want it to stop.
But there are still no clear signs of an agreement.
