IRAN IS DEFIANT AFTER TRUMP CALLS US ATTACKS 'SUCCESS'
Israeli military officials say Iran fired multiple missiles toward their country. This is believed to be Tehran's first military responsesince the United States struck three Iranian nuclear sites early Sunday local time. Our objective was the destruction of Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world's number one state sponsor of terror. Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success. Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated.
Trump added. Iran must now make peace, he said. If it does not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier. CNN says a GBU-57 massive ordnance penetrator bunker buster bomb was used in the operation on the Fordow facility. It is designed to attack deeply buried sites. and hardened bunkers and tunnels. Fox News reports the attack on Forto used six bunker buster bombs. It also says Natanz and Isfahan were wiped out with 30 Tomahawk missiles launched by American submarines.
Iran's Tasnim news agency reports there are no signs of radioactive contamination at three of the sites and no danger to nearby residents.
The International Atomic Energy Agency posted on social media that no increase in offsite radiation levels has been reported so far at those sites. The agency says it will provide further assessment on the situation.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the US attack on social media, he said. The United States, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has committed a grave violation of the UN Charter, international law and the NPT by attacking Iran's peaceful nuclear installations. Araghchi warned that the attack will have everlasting consequences. Iran's Atomic Energy Organization confirmed that attacks took place. But it downplayed the damage at the Fordow site and vowed to continue nuclear development.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the strikes in a video he called Trump a friend like no other for Israel.
Congratulations, President Trump. Your bold decision to target Iran's nuclear facilities with the awesome and righteous might of the United States will change history.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres released a statement saying he was greatly alarmed by the use of force by the US against Iran. He went on to cite a growing risk the conflict could rapidly get out of control with consequences for civilians, the region and the whole world. Israeli military officials say Iran has launched multiple missiles toward their country on Sunday. Local media report at least 11 people have been injured. CNN says the strikes damaged buildings in Tel Aviv.
CHINA SHOWS OFF HOMEMADE FIGHTERS AT PARIS AIR SHOW
China is showcasing its homemade warplanes at one of the world's largest air shows in France. The country is apparently trying to increase its presence in the global weapons export market.Chinese companies and organizations are being joined by 47 other countries and territories showing off their wares. This year, 76 entities from China are taking part.
That's more than twice the number that were at the previous air show in 2023.
They are exhibiting models of such aircraft as the J-10 fighter and the country's newest stealth fighter jet, the J-35.
The J-35 looks like the F-35. There are a lot of similarities. In terms of capabilities, I don't know. F-35 are hgh competitor right now.
China exports a J-10 fighter to Pakistan whose military claims the aircraft shot down French-made Rafale fighters last month that had been deployed by the Indian military. Chinese media have been touting the alleged incident as a sign of their country's advanced military technology. A Japanese defense expert shared his thoughts on China's intentions.
I think China sees that there is enough room to expand its warplanes, as they are relatively low-cost and have high performance. And in the long run, China apparently wants to change the weapon systems used by emerging and developing countries that have had to depend on the West.Masuda says there is a possibility that Chinese-made weapons will be used widely across Asia.
TAIWAN OPPOSITION KMT LAWMAKERS FACE JULY RECALL VOTE
Twenty-four lawmakers in Taiwan's largest opposition party, the Kuomintang, or KMT, will face a recall challenge next month. The KMT currently holds 52 seats, and together with another opposition party, it holds a majority in the 113-member parliament.
President Lai Ching-te leads the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, the DPP, which holds 51 seats.
A civic group critical of the KMT's policies has been the driving force behind a petition to hold the recall vote. The Central Election Commission announced on Friday that the group had collected enough signatures from voters to hold a recall election that will be held on July 26. Voting will take place in the electoral districts that the 24 lawmakers represent. They will lose their seats if votes in favor of a recall outnumber opposing votes and if recall votes account for at least 1/4 of a district's registered voters. Many of the KMT lawmakers could be unseated. If the recall bid is successful, then the DPP could gain a majority by winning at least six seats in special elections to fill those vacancies following the recall vote.
