VIGILANCE URGED IN NORTHERN JAPAN AMID SEISMIC ACTIVITY
Residents of northern Japan are struggling to get things back to normal following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake on Monday.
As seismic activity remains high, the meteorological agency is urging people along the northern Pacific coast to stay vigilant against a possible mega-quake.
Residents of Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture gathered at City Hall.
Officials are working on Sunday to issue certificates that residents need to apply for public financial aid for quake damage.

The city registered an intensity of upper six on the Japanese scale of zero to seven.
The quake triggered tsunami as high as 70 centimeters at a port along the Pacific Ocean in neighboring Iwate Prefecture.
Since Monday, there have been dozens of quakes with an intensity of one or higher.
The meteorological agency says there's a relatively high possibility that a strong tremor could occur along the Japan Trench or the Chishima Trench of Hokkaido.
An advisory is in place for subsequent earthquakes off the coast of Hokkaido or Sanriku.
It covers 182 municipalities in the prefecture of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Chiba.
Officials are urging people to check evacuation routes, prepare emergency kits, secure home furniture, and confirm backup food, water, and portable toilets.

BELARUS FREES NOBEL LAUREATE, JAPANESE MAN
The government of Belarus has released 123 prisoners pardoned by President Alexander Lukashenko.
Among them is human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialyatsky.
Bialyatsky was a fierce critic of Lukashenko and was detained in 2021 and sentenced to a 10-year prison term in 2023.
Others released include a senior opposition figure, Maria Kalech Mikova and Nakanishi Masatoshi, a Japanese language teacher at a national university in Belarus.
They have been transported to neighboring Ukraine and Lithuania.
Nakanishi was taken into custody in 2024 on suspicion of collecting information on military facilities in Belarus for Japanese intelligence agents.
Earlier this year, he was sentenced to seven years in prison on espionage charges.
Local media outlets have reported the move followed two days of negotiations between Lukashenko and an envoy of US President Donald Trump.
The reports say that in return, the US agreed to lift sanctions imposed on Belarusian-made fertilizer.
LDP JOINT GROUP REVIEWING SUPPORT FOR SOLAR PROJECTS
NHK has learned that a group of lawmakers has compiled a draft proposal for the government to review measures that promote major solar power generation projects.
Mega solar plants have increased in Japan since the government introduced an incentive for renewable energy in 2012, but those facilities have stirred mounting concerns on the natural environment.
The joint group, including members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's Economy, Trade and Industry Division and the Environment Division, put together the draft.
The draft proposal calls on the government to strengthen effective regulations to restrict environmental destruction caused by deforestation.
It says coexistence with local communities and consideration of the environment are prerequisites for the introduction of renewable energy sources, and that government support should be focused on measures in line with them.
The draft calls for the review or abolition of the extra charge for renewable energy, which is collected from electricity users, every month.
The government is using the money to support major solar power projects.
The LDP plans to further discuss the draft this week and finalize the proposal.
US TROOPS, INTERPRETER KILLED IN SYRIA, TRUMP VOWS RETALIATION
The US military says two of its soldiers and one civilian interpreter have been killed by a gunman in central Syria.
President Donald Trump says it was an attack by the Islamic State group and has vowed retaliation.
The US Central Command and Pentagon officials say the incident occurred on Saturday during counterterrorism operations in the city of Palmyra.
They also say three others were injured and the gunman was killed.
Syria's state-run news agency says Syrian security forces and US troops were on a joint field patrol when they were attacked.
It reports that two members of the Syrian forces were wounded.
Trump has condemned the attack.

JAPANESE, SOUTH KOREAN KIDS MAKE KIMCHI TOGETHER
Japanese and South Korean children have made kimchi-pickled vegetables together for a cultural exchange event in a city north of Tokyo.
The children from an elementary school in Hiraka and Tokyo Korean School made the traditional Korean food.
The city is known to have hosted a community of people who migrated to Japan from the Korean peninsula in the 8th century.
The children went to a field to pick Chinese cabbage.
They learned that the vegetable from South Korea is more suitable for kimchi as it has less moisture and denser fibers.
The students placed chili pepper and other seasonings between the leaves of salted cabbage and put the kimchi into bags.
