Heavy Rain Across Japan May Continue Through Thursday
Weather officials in Japan are urging residents along the Pacific coast and other regions to remain on high alert over the next few days for heavy rain.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says rain clouds are developing over the Izu Islands as well as coastal areas of western and eastern Japan as an autumn rain front is moving north near the southern coast of Japan's main island.
A level 4 urgent warning for landslides has been issued as of 4 p.m. for Hachijo Town and Miyake Village in the Izu Islands, Yakushima Town and Toshima Village in Kagoshima Prefecture.
Rain is continuing in the Izu Islands, and the agency warns that linear rain bands could develop through early Monday morning.
The agency says linear rain bands could also form in Tokyo's 23 wards and Tama area, Saitama, Kanagawa, Chiba, Aichi, Shizuoka and Mie prefectures from Sunday night through Monday.
Weather officials say the heavy rain in many parts of the country could continue until around Thursday.
It's calling on people to be on high alert for mudslides and to be on the alert for flooding in low-lying areas and overflowing rivers.
British Right-Wing Party Pledges to Stop Immigrant Boats
In the UK, the leader of a right-wing party has pledged to stop illegal immigrants from crossing the English Channel.
Nigel Farage is the leader of Reform UK. He said during a speech in Birmingham that if the party comes to power, they will stop immigrant boats in the first 100 days.
He called for a general election and criticized Prime Minister Andy Burnham, saying he does not have the mandate of the people.
Burnham leads the ruling Labour Party and took office in July.
Last year, over 40,000 illegal immigrants crossed the Channel from France.
Farage was joined at the party conference by the leader of France's far-right National Rally Party, Jordan Bardela.
The two signed a memorandum saying they would work together to tighten immigration controls if they both take power in their countries.
Reform UK has the highest support rate among British political parties, but the Labour Party is catching up as it focuses on measures against rising prices.
War in Ukraine: Putin Meets US Special Envoys Over Ukraine Situation
Russian President Vladimir Putin has met with United States Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow. They likely discussed a peace plan for Ukraine drawn up by Washington.
The Russian presidential office made the announcement on Saturday, adding that the meeting also included Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.
At the start of the talks, Putin said that Russia is ready to explain how it sees the current situation in Ukraine, which he described as difficult.
Witkoff said that he had been looking forward to the meeting.
Before the talks, Trump said on Friday that Witkoff would share with Moscow Washington's proposal to end the conflict in Ukraine and stressed his desire to overcome the impasse.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine is in its fifth year and both countries are increasing long-range attacks. It's unclear whether the latest talks will be a catalyst for peace.
Iran Conflict: US Attacks 3 Oil Tankers
The United States has attacked three Iranian oil tankers in response to Iran firing ballistic missiles at two US warships as tension rises in the Middle East.
The US Central Command announced in a statement on Saturday that it had struck three Iranian crude oil carriers near Iran's largest oil shipping hub, Karg Island, in the Gulf of Oman.
CENCOM said that the strikes were in response to a ballistic missile attack by Iran on a US aircraft carrier and a destroyer patrolling waters around the Middle East.
It added that the two US vessels successfully evaded the Iranian missiles.
CENCOM also said that if Iran shoots at two US ships, the US will respond by taking out three of Iran's vessels.
A released video shows the three tankers being attacked from above as flames and smoke rose from the ships.
Iran has reported that an Iranian oil tanker was struck by US missiles near Kar Island and that no one was injured.
Tehran claims control of the Strait of Hormuz and warns of attacks on ships that do not comply with its demands.
The US continues its naval blockade of Iran as part of its efforts to step up economic pressure on the country.
The latest US attack is expected to raise tensions in the region.
German Far-Right AfD Likely to Win State Election
An anti-immigrant political party in Germany is expected to win the most votes in Sunday's state assembly election in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt.
The Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, maintains its exclusive stance on immigrants and refugees. It's likely to become the largest party in the Saxony-Anhalt Assembly.
The former East German state has a population of 2.1 million.
The latest opinion poll released by Germany's public broadcaster on Thursday shows the AfD gaining 41 percent of support.
In the ruling camp, the center-right Christian Democratic Union garnered 23% and the center-left Social Democratic Party 8.5%.
In May last year, Germany's intelligence agency classified the AfD as a confirmed right-wing extremist movement.
The group became the largest party in the state assembly election in 2024 in the eastern state of Thurlingen for the first time.
It made a big leap to become the second largest party in the federal election in February last year.
If the AfD leads the Saxony-Anhalt state government, it will be the first time a far-right party has done so in Germany since World War II.
Germany has placed importance on tolerance and diversity as a result of its reflection on Nazism.
Japan's Prince Hisahito Turns 20
Japan's Prince Hisahito, the son of Crown Prince and Princess Akishino, turned 20 years old on Sunday.
The Imperial Household Agency says the prince is in his sophomore year at the University of Tsukuba, north of Tokyo.
He is mainly studying biology while working on compulsory subjects such as English and physical education.
Prince Hitahito has also been taking part in more activities as a member of the imperial family. In January, he attended the annual New Year's poetry reading for the first time.
The prince wrote a poem about the joy of closely observing dragonflies, which he has been interested in since childhood.
In May, he attended an imperial banquet for the first time to welcome the Philippine president and his wife, who were visiting Japan as state guests.
The prince also took part in one of the country's largest training camps for Boy Scouts held in Hiroshima prefecture last month where he gave his first speech.
