Kagoshima Pref. Warning for Landslides Revised to Level 4
Authorities have revised the emergency warning for landslides issued for a town in Kagoshima Prefecture.
Yakushima is now under a Level 4 warning and the risk of disasters remains extremely high. Record rainfall has fallen on the region.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says two factors are at play: a seasonal front off the southern coast and a tropical storm. Officials say conditions are extremely unstable.
Developed rain clouds are covering southern Kyushu.
Unstable conditions are also expected across much of western and eastern Japan on Saturday. Heavy rain and thunder is expected in some areas.
Although the rain may subside, it could intensify again.
Disasters may even occur in areas far from the storm.
The JMA is calling on people to remain on high alert for mudslides.
2 Workers Rescued at Nepal Hydro Plants
Next, rescue teams in Nepal are still searching for survivors more than a week after massive flash floods along the border with China.
They have rescued two workers trapped inside a power plant and are looking for others.
Nepal's disaster management authorities say the two were pulled from the tunnel of the upper Trishuli 3A hydropower project on Friday.
One is said to have been taken to a hospital in the capital Kathmandu.
The condition of the other worker is unknown.
Nepalese government sources say about 30 people remain in the same tunnel.
Hundreds of people are believed to be trapped in logistics tunnels and other structures linked to hydropower plants that dot the steep terrain.
Urgent search operations have continued since the disaster struck on August 26.
Nepal's disaster agency says 1,294 people have died and more than 5,000, including five Japanese nationals, remain unaccounted for.
China's state media says 31 people were killed and more than 530 are missing on the Chinese side.
Rescuers are being hampered by widespread disruptions to roads, power and communications.
UNICEF: 22,000 Children Without Clean Water After Nepal Floods
Meanwhile, UNICEF says at least 22,000 children are without access to clean water.
The agency said on Thursday, water supply systems and sanitation facilities across the affected districts have been damaged or destroyed.
Officials say safe water is urgently needed for drinking, sanitation and hygiene.
They noted families with children are being evacuated to crowded sites, raising the risk of waterborne and infectious disease outbreaks.
UNICEF called for the damaged infrastructure to be rebuilt to withstand future floods, not simply restored to the way they were before.
Heat-Related Deaths in France Reached 7,000
France's health minister says the record-breaking heat this summer is believed to have contributed to around 7,000 deaths by the end of July.
Severe heat is continuing mainly in the southern part of the country.
Weather authorities say extreme heat is expected to persist through the weekend with temperatures ranging from 37 to 40 degrees Celsius.
Health Minister Stephanie Rist said on Friday that many of the deceased were people living alone in large cities.
French weather officials announced on Thursday that the average temperature between June and August was 3.6 degrees higher than average, marking the hottest summer since record-keeping began in 1900.
Weather officials also said France was hit by heatwaves three times throughout the season, totaling 53 days, the longest ever.
Iran Conflict Reports: US Bomb Likely Hit Wedding
New reports suggest those killed at a wedding in southern Iran were likely hit by an American weapon. It's raising new questions about Washington's military targets.
Iranian media reported the attack on Tuesday.
It says a residential area in Sirik was hit and five people including children were killed.
It says the wedding was being held in the area.
Leaders in Tehran are calling the attack a war crime.
But the US military says their targets that day were facilities linked to Iranian forces.
The New York Times reports the bomb was likely dropped by the US.
It says experts analyzed footage showing the remains.
It says they found features matching a glide bomb used by the US Central Command.
The experts say that it's not used by Iranian forces.
The report adds that satellite images show a communications facility nearby was destroyed. It's about 130 meters from where the wedding took place.
The Times investigation is backed by Reuters.
Military experts who reviewed the footage say the explosion likely resulted from a direct hit by a US munition.
But Vice President JD Vance is pushing back.
He said on Thursday that Washington, with 100 percent confidence, never targets civilians.
And CENTCOM says it's conducting its own review of the Iranian reports.
White House Releases Online Games Promoting Trump’s Agenda
The White House has released a series of retro-style video games reflecting the policies of US President Donald Trump.
Players are told to build border walls and round up illegal immigrants.
The five titles were unveiled on Thursday, drawing criticism from Democrats.
The White House also posted a video to social media promoting the games.
It features Trump's slogan MAGA, which stands for Make America Great Again.
It uses audio apparently sourced from Japanese video game giant Sega.
The firm told NHK it will refrain from commenting.
The White House says the games are meant to contrast a culture of fun and winning and the dark socialist vision Democrats have for America.
Democrats responded on social media.
One lawmaker asked what the White House is focused on at a time when the average gas price across America tops four dollars.
CNN described the games.
as another attempt by the Trump administration to troll the Democrats.
War in Ukraine: Russian Drone Hits Ukraine’s Security Service
Russian military forces have been escalating attacks on Ukraine.
Their latest target is a key agency responsible for security.
The strikes hit a building of the Security Service of Ukraine.
The mayor of the capital, Kyiv, says 12 people were hurt.
The building is in a historic part of the city near a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Saint Sophia Cathedral.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on social media the attack targeted the office of the head of the Security Service.
He said he told his forces to deliver an appropriate, tangible response.
A US think tank says Russian troops are shifting towards using drones that are powered by jet engines.
These are said to be more difficult to shoot down and that Ukraine's interception rate is dropping.
US website Axios reports that President Trump's special envoy and his son-in-law are traveling to Moscow and Kyiv.
It says Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday. Then they'll meet Zelensky the following day.
The Ukrainian president confirmed that the details have been provided by the US side.
Officials in Washington and Kyiv say they've been discussing the trip for months.
