Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has disclosed that he strongly urged South Korean President Moon Jae-in to abide by the bilateral agreement on those referred to as comfort women.
Abe spoke in a Diet committee on Tuesday about his meeting with Moon on Friday. He visited South Korea to attend the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
He said he told Moon the 2015 bilateral pact confirms the 2 countries will finally and irreversibly resolve the issue of the women.
Abe said he informed the South Korean president that he was subject to some harsh criticism when the accord was reached.
He said he told Moon that in diplomacy, leaders must make decisions while resigning themselves to reproach, and that otherwise countries could not establish future-oriented relationships.
Last month, Moon suggested South Korea would seek further efforts by Japan on the issue, though he will not demand renegotiation.
Abe also disclosed that he spoke briefly with the president of North Korea's Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, Kim Yong Nam at a reception in PyeongChang.
He said he conveyed Japan's position regarding North Korea's abductions, and nuclear and missile programs.
He said he made a strong and direct demand for all abductees to be returned to Japan and that the issue be resolved.

North Korean media say leader Kim Jong Un has instructed a high-level delegation to take practical steps to improve inter-Korean ties. The delegation has just returned from South Korea.
The country's ruling party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported this on Tuesday. Its front page showed a photo of Kim and members of the delegation, including his younger sister Kim Yo Jong.
The newspaper says the delegates made a detailed report on their contacts with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and other officials in Seoul.
It says the delegates also briefed Kim on what they had grasped during their visit, including the South's intentions and US moves.
Kim reportedly expressed gratitude to the South for giving special priority to the delegation's visit, and for making sincere efforts for the members' convenience.
The report says Kim ordered practical measures to be taken for the improvement of North-South ties.
During a meeting with President Moon in Seoul on Saturday, the North's high-level delegation conveyed Kim's proposal to hold an inter-Korean summit sometime soon.

The US Secretary of State says it is up to North Korea to decide when talks with his country should be held.
Rex Tillerson made the remark while he was speaking to reporters in the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Monday.
Tillerson said it's up to the North Koreans to determine when they are ready to engage with the US "in a sincere and meaningful way." He also said that Pyongyang knows "what has to be on the table for conversations."
The comments came after Pyongyang proposed an inter-Korean summit last week.
The US has long insisted that it will not enter into negotiations until the North shows it is willing to denuclearize.
Tillerson suggested that the US will wait and see if there is any change in Pyongyang's approach to its nuclear and missile development programs.
Earlier, Vice President Mike Pence said in a newspaper interview that his government would continue to put pressure on the North, but would be open to the possibility of engaging in talks at the same time.
Tillerson didn't rule out negotiations with Pyongyang, but he said it's too early to judge whether recent developments represent the start of a "diplomatic process."

A Chinese government official has suggested that the killing of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's brother in Malaysia one year ago resulted from a conflict over who should succeed their father, Kim Jong Il.
Kim Jong Nam, the older brother of the North Korean leader, was fatally poisoned by the highly toxic VX nerve agent at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on February 13, 2017.
The source told NHK that in August 2012, 8 months after Kim Jong Il's death, North Korea's then-number-2 man Jang Song Thaek told then-Chinese president Hu Jintao that he wanted the older brother to succeed his father.
Jang Song Thaek is the brothers' uncle and was visiting Beijing.
The meeting was recorded by then-Chinese Communist Party high-ranking official Zhou Yongkang, using a subordinate. Zhou tipped off Kim Jong Un about the meeting early the next year.
Jang was executed for treason in December of that year.
China's government believes that information conveyed by Zhou prompted Kim Jong Un to get rid of his uncle and brother.
It's not known why Zhou told Kim the information. Some say Zhou wanted to avoid being investigated for corruption by using his ties with North Korea.
Zhou was later given an indefinite prison term on charges of corruption and leaking state secrets. The source says the latter includes the tip-off to North Korea.
China's government has not commented on the murder of Kim Jong Nam. But the latest revelation could be a key to understanding relations between the country and the North.

A South Korean court has sentenced a close friend of former president Park Geun-hye to 20 years in prison for a string of corruption charges.
The Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday handed down the ruling on Choi Soon-sil for bribery, influence-peddling and abuse of power.
The court also fined her about 16 million dollars in relation to the corruption scandal that led to Park's impeachment.
Choi had been charged with colluding with Park to extort tens of millions of dollars from businesses, including the Samsung Group.
Choi has denied the charges, saying the facts were distorted as part of a plot to oust Park.
Observers say Choi's sentencing will likely affect the upcoming ruling on Park, who has also been charged with corruption.
The court also sentenced Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin to 2 and a half years in prison for paying about 6 million dollars in bribes to Park's camp.

Iraq has issued an urgent appeal for billions of dollars of international aid to rebuild areas devastated by a 3-year battle with the Islamic State militant group.
The government appeal was made during an international aid conference that opened in Kuwait on Monday. Officials from more than 70 countries and international organizations are taking part in the 3-day meeting.
Iraq's Planning Minister Salman al-Jumaili said the country needs 88.2 billion dollars for reconstruction.
His ministry says a quarter of the amount is urgently required, in order to quickly build housing for 2.5 million people displaced by fierce fighting.
The Iraqi government declared victory over the Islamic State group in December after recapturing the northern city of Mosul and other areas from the extremists.
In addition to requesting international support, Iraq is also seeking private-sector investments.
The government announced 157 projects in January, including airport repairs and oil development, while calling on companies around the world to invest.

The world's tallest hotel has opened in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
The Gevora Hotel is a 75-story tower standing 356 meters tall. It is one meter taller than the previous record holder JW Marriott Marquis Hotel, which is also in Dubai.
Local reports say the hotel has more than 500 rooms and cost more than 130 million dollars to build.
The new hotel aims to differentiate itself from its upscale rivals by offering cheaper room rates. It hopes to attract customers such as families.
The opening on Monday comes as Dubai's economy continues to grow. The emirate is now home to 7 of the world's 10 tallest hotels.
Analysts are watching how the opening of the new hotel will stimulate Dubai's tourism.
