Overseas media outlets are giving extensive and glowing coverage to Hanyu's short program performance.
In an article titled "Yuzuru Hanyu Shines; Nathan Chen Stumbles," the New York Times calls the performance one of great technical skill, languid beauty and strategic cleverness.
It mentions that Hanyu injured his ankle in November, but says he showed no ill effects on the ice.
The article goes on to describe US medal hopeful Chen as the most accomplished performer of quadruple jumps, but says the medal podium appears far beyond his reach. Chen stands in the 17th place.
The Associated Press reports that Hanyu bowed as he received a huge ovation.
It says if he wins gold, he will become the first men's singles skater to win back-to-back Olympic titles since American Dick Button, who achieved the feat in 1952.
France's AFP says Hanyu took a giant step towards defending his Olympic figure skating title with a flawless short program, adding that he could not have got off to a more encouraging start.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono says the international community should beware of being blinded by North Korea's "charm diplomacy".
Kono spoke on Friday at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
He said the North considers owning nuclear weapons to be crucial for expelling US forces and achieving reunification of the 2 Koreas. He urged other nations not to accept a nuclear-armed North.
Kono said the world should continue to unanimously increase pressure on Pyongyang and not fail to notice its attempts to evade sanctions.
Kono also made an apparent reference to China's maritime activities in the East and South China seas. He said no unilateral changes to the status quo should be permitted in the region.

The foreign ministers of Japan and Russia have agreed to meet in March, in order to discuss joint economic activities on the 4 Russian-controlled islands that are claimed by Japan. The meeting will take place ahead of a visit to Russia in May by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Japan's Taro Kono met his counterpart Sergei Lavrov in the German city of Munich on Friday. The ministers agreed to meet on March 21st in Tokyo. Russia's presidential election will be held three days before, on March 18th.
The aim of the meeting in March is to pave the way for a productive summit between Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both sides want to make progress and eventually start the joint economic activities.
Lavrov said Russia will do its best to make Abe's visit a success.
Kono responded that Japan will move forward with the preparations for various bilateral projects.
Also during the meeting, Kono lodged a complaint over the military drills that were conducted by Russia on one of the 4 islands. He said the exercises are incompatible with Japan's position.
The Japanese government maintains that the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.
Kono also stressed that maximum pressure should be placed on North Korea. Lavrov responded that there is no change in Russia's stance, regarding the aim of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

Japan's government is set to decide as early as next month on details of a ceremony for Emperor Akihito's abdication next year.
The government plans to put together a basic policy for a series of rituals relating to the abdication, and Crown Prince Naruhito's ascension to the throne. It has set up a preparatory committee and is soliciting expert opinion.
The Imperial House Law has a provision on the Crown Prince's coronation ceremony. But there is no legal provision concerning the Emperor's abdication.
Therefore the government plans to decide at a Cabinet meeting as early as next month that the abdication ceremony will be conducted as a state act under the Constitution.
The government is proceeding with a plan to conduct the ceremony on April 30th, 2019, when Emperor Akihito abdicates.
But most government officials are against a declaration of a handover of the throne by the Emperor as previously done by his predecessors in or before the Edo period, because such a move would violate the Constitution.
Instead, the government is arranging to create an occasion for Emperor Akihito to give a speech. Some people are calling for such a statement so that the public will have an opportunity to reflect on 3 decades with the Emperor, who has acted as the symbol of the state.
The government plans to decide on details of a celebration for the 30th anniversary of the Emperor's reign. It is also expected to look into the timing for an announcement on the name of the new era.

US Special Counsel Robert Mueller says his office has indicted 13 Russians and 3 Russian companies for interfering in the 2016 presidential election.
An announcement on Friday said the Russians were charged with a conspiracy to defraud the United States and other criminal counts.
The indictment says the Russians began working in 2014 to boost the campaign of Donald Trump and undermine his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.
It says they posed as Americans, and spread divisive messages through social media and advertising.
The indictment also says the Russians contacted Trump campaign officials and his support groups.
But it does not say whether there was any collusion with the Trump campaign.
Trump tweeted that Russia started its anti-US campaign in 2014, long before he announced his candidacy for president. He wrote, "The Trump campaign did nothing wrong - no collusion!"
In announcing the charges, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told reporters the alleged meddling did not alter the outcome of the election. He stressed that Mueller's investigation is still ongoing.

A Turkish court has released a German-Turkish journalist in a move apparently aimed at easing tensions and repairing economic ties with Germany.
The court freed Deniz Yucel on Friday, pending trial.
Yucel was one of several foreigners detained on charges of threatening domestic security in the wake of a foiled coup attempt by the military in 2016.
Germany lobbied intensively for the release of Yucel, who has been in custody for a year.
Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed the release, and called on Turkey to guarantee fast judicial proceedings for the other detainees.

The astronauts were tasked with retrieving the old mechanical hands from the station's 17-meter robotic arm. Mechanical hands are used to catch cargo spacecraft sent from Earth.
The 2 were also able to complete additional tasks because they finished their initial assignments early.
Kanai is the 4th Japanese astronaut to conduct a spacewalk. He is the first to do so in about 5 years.
Kanai is currently on a 6-month mission at the ISS. He has been there since December.
