Russian authorities are suggesting it could be some time before they release the crew of a Japanese fishing boat seized last week.

Russian officials seized the boat, Number 68 Nishino-maru, on Wednesday in the Sea of Japan, citing alleged illegal fishing.

The ship belongs to a crab fishing cooperative in Shimane Prefecture, western Japan.

The vessel departed from a port in Tottori Prefecture on January 26th.

It is currently docked at the port of Nakhodka in the Russian Far East.

Russian officials have told NHK they seized the vessel on suspicion of illegal fishing in the country's exclusive economic zone.

They are reportedly questioning the captain and may arrest him.

The officials say they will question the other 9 crewmembers, and that it could be some time before they are released.

The Japanese Consulate General in Vladivostok says its officials have met with the crewmembers and confirmed they are in good health.

The African Union says a peace deal has been reached between the government of the Central African Republic and 14 armed groups.

The AU, which mediated talks in Khartoum, Sudan, made the announcement on Saturday.

Since 2013, the Central African Republic has been rocked by clashes between mostly Muslim rebels and predominantly Christian militias.

The United Nations has dispatched about 14,000 peacekeepers to the country.

Details of the agreement have not been made public, but it may include amnesty for combatants.

Fighting has intensified in the past year due to battles over resources such as diamonds and gold.

The United Nations Children's Fund says 1.5 million children are in need of food and thousands have been recruited as soldiers.

A long-distance sleeper train has derailed in northern India, killing at least six people and injuring 28.

The 23-car train bound for the capital, New Delhi, derailed in northern Bihar State around 4 AM on Sunday. Some of the cars fell sideways. A rail fracture is believed to have caused the derailment. Police are investigating if there were any problems with the tracks.

About 100 train accidents are reported in India every year. Aging tracks, equipment and inadequate maintenance are the main reasons for the poor safety record. More than 600 people have been killed in such accidents in the past five years.

Japanese experts have been training Indian railway staff at the country's request. But local media say the Indian government should make greater efforts to improve safety.

Vending machines selling vacuum-sealed broiled eels and other specialties from Hamamatsu City in central Japan have been placed in busy areas in Hong Kong.

A trading firm in Hamamatsu organized the event to promote local specialties to Hong Kong gourmets. The machines also sell candies made from mikan tangerines among other items.

About 9 people from Hamamatsu, including producers, gathered for the opening of the machines on Saturday.
The machines are connected to the Internet, allowing sales to be monitored remotely.

The vending machines display videos of the broiled eels being manufactured as well as Lake Hamana and other tourist sites in Hamamatsu.

After the event, people sampled the products and tried out the vending machines.

One shopper said by seeing how the product was manufactured, she can buy it with ease of mind. She said she wouldn't buy a product from a vending machine without knowing how it's made.

Hiroshi Yamamoto, the head of the firm, says vending machines save rent and labor costs in the expensive Chinese city and that they allow products to be sold at prices similar to those in Japan.

He says he wants to further expand sales channels if selling products using vending machines proves successful.

Top sumo wrestlers and a popular kabuki actor have joined a traditional bean-throwing festival to invite good luck at a Buddhist temple near Tokyo.

The annual event was held on Sunday at Naritasan Shinshoji Temple. The event is a centuries-old tradition dating to the Edo Period.

Celebrities taking part included Yokozuna grand champion Hakuho and kabuki star Ichikawa Ebizo.

Participants threw beans from a stage set up in front of the temple's main hall as well-wishers rushed to catch them as a sign of good luck.

A man in his 50s said he had been waiting since 3 AM and was happy to be able to catch many beans. He said he believes he will have a healthy year.
The day-long event is expected to attract about 75,000 people.

Some 1,200 kilograms of soybeans and peanuts will be used.
