Vietnamese people are welcoming a plan to hold the 2nd US-North Korea summit in their country. US President Donald Trump gave details of the plan in his State of the Union address on Tuesday.

In Hanoi, a woman visiting a temple with her family on Wednesday said she looks forward to having the world leaders visit Vietnam. She also said the country was chosen because of its safety and peace.

A man said he's happy and that Vietnam was picked because it's close to North Korea. He added that the leaders will be able to see the country's economic growth.

People in Da Nang, where the summit is widely expected to be held, also welcomed the plan.
A woman said the city is beautifully developed and suitable for the talks. She added that she wants people around the world to know about the city.

A man said Vietnam is no longer at odds with the US and has good relations with the North. He added that the summit will be a chance for Vietnam to show its neutrality, and that he hopes the meeting will get the North to proceed with denuclearization.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he wants to hold a telephone conference with US President Donald Trump before the second US-North Korea summit in late February.

Abe was speaking at an Upper House budget committee meeting on Wednesday, after Trump delivered his State of the Union address to Congress.

Referring to the address, Abe said that although he could not watch Trump's address from beginning to end, he felt it was a powerful speech full of patriotism that calls for unity of the American people.

Abe said it would be difficult to hold a meeting with Trump ahead of the US-North Korea summit, so he plans to talk with him over the phone to closely coordinate policies on the North.

He added the topics will include Pyongyang's nuclear and missile issues, as well as the abductions of Japanese nationals, which is the most important issue for Japan.

Foreign Minister Taro Kono also said there is a proposal from the US side for a bilateral foreign ministerial meeting before the summit.

Kono said he wants to work closely with his US counterpart.

Toyota Motor has reported record sales for the April to December period -- but has downgraded its profit outlook for the full business year.

Toyota says it has revised down its net profit forecast for this fiscal year through March from 21 billion to 17 billion dollars. It cites unrealized losses on some of the firm's equity investments -- due to a worldwide slump in stock prices.

A senior executive stressed the firm's efforts to deal with global uncertainties stemming from the US-China trade dispute and other factors.

Executive Vice President, Shigeki Tomoyama said, "Things are moving much faster in the world than we expected. So we're aiming to achieve a corporate structure that can swiftly respond to any situation."

Toyota says group sales for the April to December period stood at about 205 billion dollars. That's up 3 percent in yen terms from a year earlier.

Sales declined in the US, but rose in Asia. Luxury models sold especially well in China.

Operating profit was up 9.5 percent. But net profit declined 29 percent.

Nissan Motor's decision to shelve plans to produce a new model in Britain is fueling concerns about the effects of Brexit.

Nissan officials announced Sunday they will not build their next-generation sport-utility vehicle at a plant in northern England. They cited stricter regulation of diesel-powered vehicles leading to less demand. But questions remain about Brexit's impact on the decision.

The British government says that if Nissan wants their financial support, the company will have to reapply based on a new investment strategy.

In an unusual move, British officials disclosed the details of their planned support for Nissan.

They said the company was set to receive 61 million pounds, or nearly 80 million dollars. But that was based on Nissan building its new model in the country.

Analysts say Britain is hoping to deter other companies from making similar decisions.

Nissan's plant in Sunderland is the biggest auto factory in the UK. It produces 440,000 vehicles a year, or 30 percent of the country's output.
Nissan's announcement has added to worries for local parts makers.

Investment in Britain's auto industry in 2018 tumbled to half of what it was the previous year.

Japan's space agency plans to land the Hayabusa2 probe on the asteroid Ryugu on February 22.

Hayabusa2 arrived at Ryugu in June of last year. The asteroid is about 300 million kilometers from Earth.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency planned to attempt a landing last October. But it was postponed because the surface of the asteroid was rockier than expected, and the agency had to select a suitable landing site and method.

The probe will try to collect rock samples from the asteroid's surface.

Outbreaks of swine fever in Japan have been confirmed at six pig farms and other facilities in five prefectures.

The disease, also known as hog cholera, is highly contagious and fatal for hogs. But the virus is not harmful to humans, even if they consume meat from infected animals.

Officials in Aichi Prefecture announced on Wednesday that hogs at two pig farms had tested positive for swine fever.

The agriculture ministry says screenings uncovered the disease in pigs transferred from the farms to four different facilities. They are located in Osaka, Nagano, Shiga and Gifu prefectures.

Hogs at the facilities will be culled in order to prevent further infections.

In Gifu Prefecture, eight swine fever outbreaks have been confirmed since September.

The latest reports bring the number of prefectures with confirmed outbreaks to five prefectures since September in Japan. Before those outbreaks last year, Japan had not seen a case of swine fever in 27 years.

The government is calling on pig farmers nationwide to closely monitor their livestock and swiftly contact authorities if they spot any abnormalities.

A US research team has discovered a battleship that belonged to the now-defunct Imperial Japanese Navy lying in waters about 1,000 meters deep off the Solomon Islands. The ship sank in a battle in the South Pacific during World War Two.

NHK has obtained video footage of the ship, named the Hiei. The discovery has led to a new theory about why it sank.

The research team is part of a foundation created by Microsoft's late co-founder Paul Allen. The team's search using a specially equipped vessel continued after Allen died last October.

The team says it found the battleship on January 31st on the seabed 985 meters down, northwest of Savo Island.
Sonar imaging shows the vessel lying with its keel up.

Footage captured by a remotely-operated underwater vehicle shows the ship's enormous propellers and rudders, and the barrels of anti-aircraft guns.

The Hiei was built in 1914. It went through numerous modifications before taking part in the attack on Pearl Harbor.

But an Allied fleet attack during the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942 rendered the ship unseaworthy. It had been believed that the crew scuttled the vessel.

NHK asked Kazushige Todaka, the Director of the Kure Maritime Museum, known as the Yamato Museum, to analyze the footage.

Todaka says that about a third of the ship's hull seems to be missing. He says this suggests that an explosion was the cause of its sinking.

Todaka added that the discovery reveals a missing part of the history of the Hiei, which took part in major sea battles during the Pacific War.

The US research team says it will publish photos and videos captured by the submarine and offer them for use in research and surveys.

Japanese researchers say the K supercomputer, one of the world's fastest, will be retired in August, to be replaced by a next-generation machine.

The K was created in 2012 as a national project. The computer has been used in a broad range of fields such as drug development, earthquake research and weather forecasting.

Engineers are working on the K's successor. They aim to give it data processing capability 100 times that of the K and start its shared use around 2021.

Research institute RIKEN say Japan's government thought about moving the K and keeping it in operation while developing the new model. But they dropped the plan due to the high cost.

The K's shutdown has raised concerns about possible negative effects on research in some fields. RIKEN says it will cooperate with other research institutes running supercomputers, to minimize such effects.

Japan's nuclear regulator has decided to take action to prevent unauthorized online sales of nuclear fuel materials.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority made the decision at its meeting on Wednesday.

The meeting heard a report from the NRA secretariat that powder and solid materials claimed to be uranium were up for sale at an online auction site operated by Yahoo Japan in November 2017.

Handlers of nuclear fuel materials require permission from the regulator.

The NRA secretariat says it notified Tokyo police in January last year about the matter, after Yahoo Japan failed to respond to its request for information on the seller of the materials.

At Wednesday's meeting, the NRA decided to ask online retailers and the Japan Direct Marketing Association not to allow sales of nuclear fuel materials by persons who have not been granted permission by the regulator. The online retailers include Yahoo Japan, Rakuten, Amazon Japan and Mercari. The Japan Direct Marketing Association is the official representative body of the direct marketing industry in Japan.

The regulator will also urge people who purchase nuclear fuel materials for research not to buy them through online sites without formal procedures.

The tournament starting next Monday was to be Osaka's first competition after her Australia Open victory last month.

She is due to take part in the Dubai Tennis Championships starting February 17.

After the Australian Open, Osaka became the first Japanese singles player to be ranked number one in the world.
