Japan recorded its biggest trade deficit in almost five years in January, extending its run of red ink to a fourth month as exports to China tumbled.

Figures released by Japan's Finance Ministry on Wednesday show the deficit for the month was 1.4 trillion yen, about 12.7 billion dollars.

Exports to all markets were down 8.4 percent from a year earlier in yen terms, largely due to a decline in sales of ships and semiconductor-making machines.

Imports declined by 0.6 percent, the result of lower crude oil prices.

Exports to China fell by 17.4 percent. Ministry officials say that could be due to China's slowing economy. They say the Lunar New Year holidays may also have dented demand.

On the other hand, Japan's surplus with the US grew for the first time in seven months, climbing 5.1 percent from a year earlier. US-bound auto exports rose by 13 percent.

US President Donald Trump has once again hinted he may be flexible on a looming trade deal deadline. March 1st is when more US tariffs on China will kick in unless the two countries reach an agreement.

Trump made the remarks on Tuesday as negotiators from both sides restarted deputy-level talks in Washington.

He said, "Our group just came back and now they're coming here. I can't tell you about the timing but the date is not a magical date. "

One sticking point has been China's currency. The Trump administration has been urging Beijing not to keep it artificially undervalued, saying that gives Chinese exports an unfair advantage.

US media outlet Bloomberg says progress has been made on the issue. It reports that "both sides have tentatively agreed" to include currency stability in a "Memorandum of Understanding" that "would form the basis of a deal."

Following the deputy-level talks, the US and China plan to have two days of minister-level negotiations from Thursday.

They'll likely focus on alleged forced technology transfers for American companies in China.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has proposed that the United States should use inter-Korean economic projects as a "concession" to urge North Korea to denuclearize.

Moon's presidential office said that he spoke with US President Donald Trump by phone for 35 minutes on Tuesday. Trump is scheduled to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Hanoi, Vietnam next week.

The office says Trump expressed high expectations for their second summit. It says Moon told Trump that South Korea is ready to take up a role if the US president asks, if that's the way to lessen the US burden.

Moon reportedly referred to reconnecting road and railway links between the two Koreas as part of inter-Korean economic cooperation.

In their first summit in June 2018, the US and North Korean leaders agreed that the Korean Peninsula would be fully denuclearized. But little progress has been made as Pyongyang is seeking concessions from the US in return for giving up its nuclear program.

US President Donald Trump says he is "in no rush" on North Korean denuclearization.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he said he expects next week's summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to be "very exciting," and that "a lot of things will come out of it."

He said he would ultimately like to see North Korea's denuclearization, but he has "no pressing time schedule." He said, "As long as there is no testing, I'm in no rush."

Trump said he had a "great conversation" by phone on Tuesday with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on the summit.

He added that he will also speak with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday.

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido has expressed his thanks to the Japanese government for its support.

Guaido tweeted on Tuesday that Japan backs his camp's efforts to restore democratic order in the country and hold free and fair elections.

The National Assembly head declared himself interim president last month.

On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Taro Kono revealed Japan's support for Guaido. Kono also raised concerns about the legitimacy of last year's presidential election. He added that Japan repeatedly called for a new presidential election, to no avail.

The international community is increasingly being drawn into the Venezuelan crisis.

More than 40 countries, including the United States and other major Western nations, have expressed support for Guaido.

President Nicolas Maduro, criticized for his autocratic rule, is backed by Russia and China.

Japan's Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya says work to improve soft ground at the site for a planned US airbase relocation in Okinawa Prefecture could raise the project's initial estimated cost.

The Defense Ministry began dumping rocks and sand off the coast of Henoko, Nago City, last December to move the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station there.

But the ministry found soft ground in part of the planned reclamation zone.

Iwaya said in the Diet on Wednesday that it is technically possible to reinforce the ground, but that the work may push up costs.

The ministry initially estimated the reclamation would cost about 2.1 billion dollars.

Okinawa Prefecture has put the cost of relocation at up to 23 billion dollars.

Iwaya said he believes the prefecture simply increased the ministry's estimate of reclamation costs tenfold and that the total cost may not rise that much.

A Japanese court has ordered the government and Tokyo Electric Power Company to pay compensation to a group of people who claim their lives were affected by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant accident in 2011.

The Yokohama District Court handed down its ruling on Wednesday. The case was filed by 175 plaintiffs from 60 households, including Fukushima evacuees who moved to Kanagawa Prefecture. Yokohama is the capital of Kanagawa.

The plaintiffs demanded a total of about 5.4 billion yen, or about 48 million dollars. The group argued that they had lost the foundation of their livelihoods and suffered mental anguish.

The court ordered the defendants to pay compensation of about 420 million yen, or 3.8 million dollars, to 152 of the plaintiffs.

It's the sixth lawsuit filed against the state and TEPCO by people affected by the Fukushima disaster. The government has been found liable in five of the six cases.

Key words : Australian extinct

The Australian government has declared a rodent indigenous to the Great Barrier Reef extinct. Experts believe it is the first mammal to die out due to climate change.

The rat-like Bramble Cay melomys's only known habitat was a small sandy island at the northern end of the world's largest coral reef.

About a decade ago, several dozen of the rodents were thought to live on the island. But recent surveys have found no trace of them.

Australia's environment ministry said on Tuesday that it has officially declared the animal extinct.

Researchers at a local university say that the low-lying island has been repeatedly inundated by seawater as global warming caused sea levels to rise. They say this likely caused the rodent's demise.

The World Wildlife Fund says the impact of climate change is threatening nearly 3,000 wild animals listed as endangered species.

The conservation organization is calling on governments to take further steps against global warming.

Three artists from the Gaza Strip visited a Yokohama art gallery on Tuesday to talk about their work and the difficulties of life in the enclave.

Mohammad Al-Hawaziri said he thought it would be impossible to get out of Gaza and visit Japan. He said he is grateful to many people for taking an interest in his home.

He also talked about the fear of Israeli air attacks, and the economic blockade in the Gaza Strip, where unemployment exceeds 50 percent. He said he wants people in Japan to know that art and culture can survive in a conflict zone.

The exhibition features about 40 works by the three artists.

A drawing by Sohail Salem shows a soldier's bandaged leg. The image suggests the wall that Israel says was built to prevent terrorism.

The exhibition at Gallery SHIMIZU in Yokohama will be held until February 26th.
