Japan's space agency has announced its space probe Hayabusa2 has successfully made its second landing on the asteroid Ryugu. The probe is on an unprecedented mission to collect underground rock samples.

Hayabusa2 began its descent from an altitude of 20,000 meters on Wednesday morning, Japan time.

By 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, the probe was about 30 meters above the asteroid. It fine-tuned its position using data from a marker dropped in advance on the surface, and made the final descent on automatic control.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, announced shortly before 11:00 a.m. that the touchdown was a success after analyzing data sent from the probe.

At the mission control center in Sagamihara City, near Tokyo, engineers erupted in cheers upon seeing data indicating the landing.

Hayabusa2 was scheduled to stay on the asteroid's surface only for a few seconds. During that time, it was to attach the tip of a cylindrical sample collector to the surface, fire a bullet and collect fractured rocks.

JAXA's Takashi Kubota described the landing as a huge success, and said the probe very likely gathered some rock samples.

Hayabusa2 made its first landing in February to collect surface rock samples.

This time, the probe will collect underground rock samples ejected by the impact of a metal object that was fired into the surface of the asteroid in April, creating an artificial crater.

Japan's space agency, JAXA, has released three photos taken by the space probe Hayabusa2 during its landing on the asteroid Ryugu in its unprecedented mission to collect underground samples.

One of the photos released on Thursday, taken 4 seconds before touchdown, is a close-up of the asteroid's rocky surface.

The second photo was taken at the moment of touchdown, as a cylindrical sample collector on the probe reached the surface. The image is partially blurred, apparently due to a cloud of sand dust stirred up on impact.

The third photo was taken 4 seconds later, immediately after the sample collector fired a bullet into the surface to collect rock samples. The photo shows countless shattered rocks flying around.

Professor Seiichiro Watanabe of Nagoya University is a senior member of the JAXA project team.

He said the images indicate that a sand deposit was created on the surface after Hayabusa2 formed a crater on Ryugu in April.

Watanabe said this means the collector very likely gathered samples from inside the asteroid.

Britain has announced that Iranian vessels tried to impede a British oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, but were turned away by a Royal Navy frigate escorting it.

The British Ministry of Defence called the Iranian action contrary to international law, and urged Tehran to de-escalate the situation.

A ministry statement says three boats approached the tanker and tried to stop it on Wednesday. The boats reportedly backed off after the British frigate moved between them and the tanker, issuing verbal warnings.

CNN and other US media earlier quoted US government officials as saying small boats of Iran's Revolutionary Guard tried to seize the tanker.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told local media on Thursday that Britain made the claims to create tension in the region and that they have no value. He did not say whether Iran was involved.

The Fars news agency, which has ties to Iran's government, said the Revolutionary Guard denied trying to stop the tanker or having contact with any foreign ships in the last 24 hours.

The incident in the key oil shipping lane has increased concerns that tension in the Middle East may intensify further.

Earlier this month, authorities in the British territory of Gibraltar captured an Iranian supertanker, prompting a former Revolutionary Guard commander to threaten retaliatory action.

US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell is visiting Japan on his first trip to the region since taking up the post in June.

Stilwell arrived at Narita Airport outside Tokyo on Thursday.

He told reporters that he is looking forward to building on the alliance as the cornerstone of the peace and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region. He also said he is looking forward to discussing Iran and North Korea with senior Japanese government officials.

During his stay through Sunday, Stilwell is scheduled to meet senior officials from the Foreign Ministry, the Defense Ministry, and the National Security Council.

The post of Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs had been vacant for more than two years until Stilwell's official appointment in June following a Senate confirmation.

The former fighter pilot held the rank of Brigadier General in the US Air Force. He was the commander of the US air base in Misawa, northern Japan, from 2008 to 2010.

South Korea's foreign minister has voiced concern to her US counterpart that Japan's export curbs on the country could have a negative impact on cooperation between the three countries.

South Korea's foreign ministry said Kang Kyung-wha spoke with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the phone for about 15 minutes on Wednesday night.

The ministry says Kang told Pompeo that Japan's tighter restrictions on some high-tech materials could cause damage not only to South Korean companies, but also to US firms and the world trade order.

Kang also said the export curbs are undesirable in terms of the country's friendly and cooperative relations with Japan, as well as cooperation between South Korea, the US and Japan.

Kang told Pompeo that South Korea hopes Japan will withdraw the restrictions and the situation will not deteriorate further. She also said her country will seek a diplomatic solution through dialogue with Japan.

South Korea's foreign ministry says Pompeo expressed understanding and agreed to continue cooperation to strengthen communication among the three countries through diplomatic channels.

22 countries, including Japan, are urging China to close mass detention centers holding members of its Muslim minority. They issued a joint letter to the UN Human Rights Council earlier this month.

International human rights groups say more than a million Uighurs are being detained in government camps for forced ideological education.
Beijing says it's fighting terrorism by offering vocational training to people influenced by extremist thinking.
In the letter, posted on the Human Rights Watch website, the countries say there are "credible reports" of arbitrary detention and widespread surveillance. They are demanding that China allow independent international observers into the Xinjiang region, where the camps are located.

China has yet to issue an official response. But Reuters, citing an anonymous diplomat, has reported that China is preparing a letter.
The joint statement comes as the Xinjiang region marks the tenth year since the eruption of ethnic clashes that killed about 200 people.

Japan's Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kotaro Nogami has stressed that the country will continue diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and bring stabilization in the Middle East by coordinating with the United States and other countries.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he said he is refraining from making comments over media reports that the US is considering forming a coalition of countries, including allies, to ensure safety of the Strait of Hormuz, which is a major shipping lane.

Nogami said ensuring safety of navigation in the strait is vital to Japan's energy security, and is also extremely important to the peace and prosperity of the international community.

Asked about whether Japan's Self-Defense Forces may join such a coalition if sounded out by the US, Nogami said the two countries are closely discussing situations involving Iran, but declined to give further details.

A semiconductor industry group is predicting that global sales of chip-making equipment will fall this year for the first time in four years.

The association, SEMI, projects worldwide sales will be down 18.4 percent from last year to 52.7 billion dollars.

It says chip makers will likely hold back on capital investment due to uncertainties over the global economy amid the US-China trade dispute. It also notes prices of memory chips have been falling on shrinking demand for smartphones and data centers.

South Korea was the largest market for the equipment last year. But it is projected to shrink 47.9 percent and fall to third place after Taiwan and China.

The data does not include the impact from Japan's tightened curbs on exports to South Korea of three materials used for making chips and other devices. Analysts say the restriction could deal a blow to the country's key industry.

Japan's National Astronomical Observatory has warned that the increasing number of satellites could pose a significant threat to astronomical observations.

The observatory expressed its concern in a rare statement on Tuesday.

About 8,000 satellites have been launched worldwide so far for the purpose of satellite broadcasting and Earth observation.

The number is now expected to increase rapidly. A US venture firm SpaceX has begun implementing a plan to launch about 12,000 satellites for a new communications business.

An image taken by a US observatory shows the effects of such satellite constellations -- a number of white lines cut across the telescope's field of view. The trails are sunlight reflections from 60 small satellites launched by SpaceX in May.

Astronomers are also concerned that radio signals emitted from satellites hinder astronomical observations using radio waves.

The Japanese observatory says satellites need to use materials less reflective to sunlight. It also says a mechanism is necessary to coordinate the use of radio frequencies in advance.

The statement says the observatory will work with astronomical organizations and satellite-related business operators to take necessary measures.

NHK has learned that former operators of an illegal manga viewing website may have earned more than 100 million yen, or nearly 1 million dollars, in ad revenue.

Japanese investigative sources say they made the finding when searching places related to the now-closed Manga-mura, or Manga-village, website. They seized computers and other evidence.

The website featured copies of comics, magazines and other materials uploaded without permission. It attracted 170 million visitors in March 2018, before being closed the following month. The site's popularity apparently pushed up its ad income.

Japanese police arrested two people in Tokyo on suspicion of copyright violations related to the website, and on Wednesday sent them to prosecutors.

A man believed to have played a main role in operating the site has been detained in the Philippines.

Japanese police have obtained an arrest warrant for 27-year-old Romi Hoshino, and are set to arrest him upon his extradition to Japan.
