High levels of radioactive material have been detected inside a Soviet nuclear submarine that sank off Norway 30 years ago.

The vessel, Komsomolets, caught fire and sank in 1989, killing 42 crew members.

The wreck is sitting on the seafloor, 1,700 meters below the surface.

Norwegian authorities carried out a probe using a remote-controlled vehicle on Wednesday.

They say sea water samples taken in a ventilation duct that leads to the inside of the submarine contained radioactive cesium that is up to 800,000 times greater than normally found in the surrounding sea water.

The authorities concluded it was leaking from inside the submarine.

They released a video showing the damaged submarine lying on the seabed.

The authorities say the leak does not pose a risk to humans or marine life, as the wreck is so deep that the pollution from Komsomolets is quickly diluted.

They intend to continue researching the wreck.

US President Donald Trump says a major operation to arrest immigrants facing deportation will start on Sunday.

Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday that the operation would mainly focus on removing criminals.

But US media outlets report the crackdown is expected to target about 2,000 families in 10 cities, including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Houston.

As the 2020 election approaches, Trump is looking to shore up support in his base. The move is an effort to signal that he is taking concrete measures against illegal immigration.

The operation has drawn criticism from immigrant rights activists. They say sending the families back to their countries would put their lives at risk.

They also say many immigrants do not receive proper notice of court dates and are unaware of the procedures needed to legally remain in the country. They say arresting them without consideration of these factors is inhumane.

About 500 protestors gathered in front of an immigration office in Los Angeles on Friday. One person called Trump's actions "cruel". The state of California is home to a large population of Central American migrants.

Britain is sending a second warship to the Strait of Hormuz amid an escalation in tensions with Iran over recent incidents in the region.

The British defense ministry said on Friday that it will dispatch the HMS Duncan to the Persian Gulf to escort British-flagged merchant ships through the region.

It said the vessel will replace the HMS Montrose, which will go in for maintenance. But British media are reporting that the two vessels will work in concert.

Relations between Iran and Britain have become strained since authorities in Gibraltar seized an Iranian oil tanker off the British territory. The authorities arrested the ship's crewmembers including the captain.

Iran is demanding the release of the ship and its crew, and has hinted at taking retaliatory action.

The British government said on Thursday that Iranian boats recently tried to block the passage of a British tanker near the Strait of Hormuz, but pulled back after warnings from a Royal Navy vessel.

Iran has denied any involvement in the incident.

Syrian government forces launched a series of air strikes on Friday on the country's last major rebel stronghold.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the attack on Idlib province and surrounding areas in the country's northwest killed 13 people and wounded at least 50 others.

The government of President Bashar al-Assad, with support from Russia, has waged a major offensive against the enclave since April, despite an agreement last October between Russia and Turkey to enforce a truce. Turkey backs some of the rebel groups in northwestern Syria.

UN officials and human rights campaigners say the bombardment is threatening the lives of about three million civilians in and around Idlib.

A senior US State Department official for East Asia has expressed readiness to hold wide-ranging discussions on security cooperation with Japan.

David Stilwell is visiting Japan for the first time since becoming assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs last month. Stilwell spoke to NHK on Friday.

He said the situation in the Pacific is changing rapidly, and that the alliance, relationship and cooperation between Japan and the US need to adapt.

US President Donald Trump has been critical of the bilateral security treaty, calling it unfair.

Stilwell said he wouldn't call it unfair, but that it needs to be adjusted.
Trump has suggested he will ask US allies to shoulder more of the costs of stationing US forces on their soil.

Stilwell said in the US political system officials nominated by the president necessarily share his perspective.

He added that he sees room to address various issues.

A US diplomat in charge of East Asia policy has said his country does not plan to mediate a Japan-South Korea dispute over Japanese export controls, and called on the two sides to settle the issue through dialogue.

David Stilwell was speaking to NHK on Friday during his first visit to Japan since assuming the post of US assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs in June.

Stilwell said tensions between Japan and South Korea are not very helpful. He added that the position of the US is that it must prevent gaps between its strongest allies in Northeast Asia.

Stilwell said the United States encourages the two countries to focus on the positive aspects of their relationship and look for areas of cooperation.

He added that he doesn't plan to mediate the dispute, other than to encourage both sides to focus on other key issues in the region, especially North Korea.

Seoul has sent high-ranking officials to Washington to explain their concerns about Japan's tighter controls on exports of high-tech materials to South Korea.

The US State Department has so far refrained from specifying how it may respond.

An auction house in New York is set to put up for sale the only surviving first generation recordings of the historic Apollo 11 moon walk to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the landing on July 20.

The videos of the 1969 event are among an estimated 1,000 government videotapes sold by NASA decades ago. They have been held in a private collection for more than 40 years.

The three video reels have a combined run time of two hours and 24 minutes. They show the astronauts walking on the moon and talking with President Richard Nixon.

The moon landing was watched by a global television audience of 500 million people.

The auction house Sotheby's says the tapes are the sharpest surviving video images of the landmark achievement.

It is thought the tapes will fetch one to two million dollars.

Japan's Princess Mako has visited a medical clinic near the Peruvian capital of Lima. She is currently making an official trip to the country to mark the 120th anniversary of the arrival of Japanese immigrants.

Princess Mako, the eldest daughter of Crown Prince and Princess Akishino, visited the facility on Friday. It was founded by a second-generation Japanese-Peruvian priest nearly 30 years ago.

She met with clinic staff members, who explained to her how they provide medical care to the surrounding community, including giving free health checkups to the poor.

The Princess then visited a section of the facility dedicated to elderly care.

Residents welcomed her by singing a song in Japanese, which the Princess joined along in. She then shook their hands and gave them her best wishes.

The Princess later visited a museum known for its collection of pre-Columbian Peruvian artifacts. The items were collected by Japanese businessman Yoshitaro Amano.
