A senior US State Department official says Washington is trying to persuade South Korea to reverse its decision to end an intelligence-sharing pact with Japan.
South Korea announced in August that it will not renew the General Security of Military Information Agreement ,or GSOMIA, when it expires on November 23.
The United States is urging the South not to go through with the move, citing the potentially adverse impact on collaborative efforts to deal with North Korea and China.
The State Department official said on Friday that in a recent visit to South Korea, he met with South Korean counterparts and stressed the importance of maintaining the agreement.
The official also said the Japanese and South Korean camps should meet face-to-face to discuss the matter and resolve their differences, and that the US is doing all it can to facilitate such discussions.
The defense ministers of Japan, the US and South Korea are expected to talk about the issue when they meet in Bangkok on the sidelines of the expanded meeting of ASEAN defense chiefs.

North Korea's state-run media says leader Kim Jong Un has observed a demonstration of the country's air force capabilities in a large-scale military drill.
The ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on Saturday that Kim visited the eastern city of Wonsan to watch the event.
It says that as part of the exercise, referred to as an air force flight drill competition, jets fired shells and dropped bombs on targets.
Kim reportedly said the competition demonstrates the ability of North Korea's air force to develop equipment that can assess and destroy enemy aircraft.
The report did not mention the United States. But the show of force may be intended as a response to upcoming military exercises by the US and South Korea.
A US research group, 38 North, announced on Thursday that analysis of satellite imagery shows more than 70 North Korean military jets, including MiG-29 fighter aircraft and bombers, were lined up at an airport in Wonsan. It noted that Kim might visit the site.

A US magazine says the administration of President Donald Trump has asked Japan to pay a much greater share of the cost to host US military bases.
Foreign Policy reported on Friday that then National Security Adviser John Bolton asked the Japanese government during a trip to Japan in July to pay roughly four times the amount it currently pays each year.
That would mean increasing its payments from 2 billion dollars a year to 8 billion dollars.
The two governments are scheduled to enter into talks next year to renegotiate Japan's payments.
A Japanese government official told NHK that he was unaware of the US request.
The Trump administration has said it wants South Korea to pay five times more than it does now to host US forces.
Some US government officials believe the high demands are simply a negotiating tactic.
Others point out that Japan has already made greater financial contributions than other US allies.

Japan's Emperor has attended the first of two imperial banquets as part of the main rite of the Daijosai, or Great Thanksgiving Ceremony after his enthronement.
The first Grand Banquet, called Daikyo-no-gi, was held at the Imperial Palace on Saturday. People who attended Friday's Daijokyu-no-gi, or Daijokyu Halls rite, were invited to attend.
They included Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Speaker and President of both chambers of the Diet, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and members of the Diet.
Emperor Naruhito entered the Homei-den State Banquet Hall shortly after noon and stood with Empress Masako in front of a large silk screen adorned with paintings of good-luck objects such as pine trees.
The Emperor said in a speech that he was pleased to welcome the guests for the banquet after performing the Daijokyu-no-gi rite. He said he would like to pray for the happiness of the people and the continued development of the country.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe made a remark on behalf of the guests.
The Imperial couple then sipped rice wine made from rice grown in two paddies in Tochigi and Kyoto Prefectures along with the attendees and the two men who own the paddies. Rice harvested from the paddies and other dishes were also served.
Members of the Imperial Household Agency's music department performed traditional Japanese songs and dance, and also a dance specially created in honor of Tochigi and Kyoto prefectures.

A third of Tokyo's central loop line will be out of service on Saturday due to construction work for a new station.
East Japan Railway, or JR East, says the partial suspension of the Yamanote Line is likely to affect as many as 560,000 people.
The operator says services between Osaki and Ueno stations will be suspended from the first train to around 4 p.m. This section includes Tokyo Station.
Trains will also be suspended on Saturday on the Keihin-Tohoku Line between Shinagawa and Tamachi stations for the whole day.
The Takanawa Gateway Station, located between Shinagawa and Tamachi, is scheduled to open in the spring of 2020.
JR East says this will be the first suspension of the Yamanote Line for construction work since the company was established in 1987. JR East officials say they need to do this because the work is on a large scale and is complicated.

Hong Kong police are intensifying criticism of student protesters, saying some universities in the territory have become bases for the rioters.
During a regular news conference on Friday police condemned some students for setting fires and committing other violent acts.
They say the students are making gasoline bombs and practicing how to use bows and arrows. They suggested they might use force on such students.
The Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council of China issued a statement that says President Xi Jinping expressed his resolute support for punishing violent criminals. It said Xi issued a strong message to restore order.
Hong Kong police have been avoiding major clashes with young protesters for the past few days.
Students continue obstructing traffic on some highways, and barricades are still in place at universities where classes have been suspended.
There is growing speculation that police may soon launch a thorough crackdown on student protestors with the support of the Chinese government.

The Hong Kong government said on Friday that a senior official has been attacked by a violent mob in Britain and suffered "serious bodily harm."
Justice Secretary Teresa Cheng, who was visiting London, has been under fire for her response to anti-government protesters in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong media released footage of the attack. They say she was surrounded by dozens of protesters, who yelled abusive language at her. They report that she fell down during the turmoil and was escorted away from the melee.
Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said in a statement that such a savage act should be strongly condemned.
Mainland China's liaison office in Hong Kong said the inhumane and indiscriminate atrocity is absolutely unacceptable.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said the ministry has asked the British government to bring the offenders to justice.
Geng also said if the UK does not change its wrong practices and continues to add fuel to the fire, it will bring calamity upon itself.

A US jury has found a former political adviser to President Donald Trump guilty in a trial stemming from a probe into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential race.
The jury for the federal district court trial handed down its verdict on Friday, convicting Roger Stone on seven counts. He will be sentenced in February.
The charges Stone faces include making a false statement when he said he did not contact the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, which released Democratic emails during the 2016 election campaign. Russia is believed to have hacked the messages.
US media say Stone is the sixth Trump campaign associate to be convicted of or pleaded guilty to charges arising from the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.
Stone is said to have known details of the alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election, and the latest verdict could be a blow to Trump's election team ahead of next year's presidential campaign.
Trump wrote on Twitter that the jurors "now convict Roger Stone of lying." He said "what about Crooked Hillary?" and criticized what he called a "double standard like never seen before" in US history.

A Japanese university team researching Nazca Lines in Peru has discovered an additional 143 geoglyphs.
The Yamagata University research group led by Professor Masato Sakai announced the findings on Friday.
The team had been looking for Nazca Lines along narrow streets for three years until this past summer.
The lines depict humans, birds, and four-legged animals such as cats. The size ranges from five meters to as large as 100 meters. They are believed to have been created between 100 BC and 300 AD.
The researchers say they used artificial intelligence technology developed by an IT firm to analyze the data.
The approach led to a discovery of a human-like figure with three head decorations. They say it is the first case in which AI helped discover geoglyphs.
Sakai says they learned that AI is an efficient tool for this type of research. He says they want to create a Nazca Line distribution map and will analyze why these lines were created, while helping to preserve this cultural heritage.
