A Myanmar court has granted permission for the detention of ousted de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint until February 15.

The National League for Democracy on Wednesday released a police document dated February 1. It accuses Aung San Suu Kyi of having illegally imported 10 items of communications equipment and using them without permission.

Win Myint is charged with having violated coronavirus restrictions by greeting election campaigners last September.

The NLD says the court granted permission for the two to be held until February 15.

They are reportedly under house arrest. Ongoing criminal procedures appear to indicate the possibility of a long detention period for the two.

Myanmar's military staged a coup on Monday, detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other NLD officials. Many lawmakers reportedly have been freed.

The military has established a state administrative council and appointed 11 ministers and top officials in the police and the prosecution as well as members of the election commission.

The head of the organizing committee of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics has said that meetings attended by a large number of women take too much time.

The remark by Mori Yoshiro came during an extraordinary meeting of councillors of the Japanese Olympic Committee on Wednesday.

Over 50 participants, some taking part online, were briefed on a revision of rules to choose new executives in June and the aim to have women make up at least 40 percent of board members.

Mori spoke as the meeting drew to a close. He referred to an increasing number of female board members at the Japan Rugby Football Union, where he has long served as head.

He said meetings take twice as long as they used to because women have a strong sense of rivalry.

He said if one member raises her hand to speak, others probably think they need to talk, too, and so everyone says something.

None of the participants responded to Mori's comments.

Mizoguchi Noriko, a silver medalist of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, now serves as councillor of the All Japan Judo Federation.

She posted a message online, saying she believes the capabilities of the chairperson, rather than the women taking part, are to blame for prolonged meetings.

She called on Mori to work to eradicate gender bias, realize the spirit of Olympism and set an example for sport governance as the head of the organizing committee.

Japanese lawmakers have just enacted legislation that will allow tougher enforcement of anti-virus rules. The legal revisions come as eleven prefectures -- including Tokyo -- remain under a state of emergency.

The revised laws will allow officials to fine people or businesses that break rules.

That includes those who test positive for the virus and are told to check into a hospital, but refuse.

Individuals who lie to health officials or refuse their inquiries will also face punishments.

Government efforts to stem the spread of the virus include shortening operating hours for bars and restaurants. Under the new rules, businesses that don't comply can be fined up to about 3,000 dollars.

Prefectural governors will also be able to put in place anti-virus measures even before the central government declares a state of emergency.

The government recently decided to extend its state of emergency for all but one of the affected prefectures for one month... until March 7.

Meanwhile, the health ministry says it has discovered a glitch in its coronavirus contact-tracing app, COCOA.

It anonymously collects information on people who have come into close contact with users and then allows them to notify others of a positive coronavirus test.

But the app has not been collecting or sending out data for android users since September. Officials aim to fix the problem by mid-February.

New case numbers in Japan have been declining in recent weeks.

In Tokyo, 676 new infections were reported on Wednesday. The daily tally has been below 1,000 for six days in a row.

NHK has learned that North Korea has set a new national day to commemorate its launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile four years ago.

North Korea on November 29, 2017, test-fired the Hwasong-15, which fell into the Sea of Japan. Pyongyang claimed the ICBM had a range covering the entire US mainland.

NHK obtained a calendar for this year that was printed in China and is sold by a company in North Korea. It notes November 29 as the day to celebrate the nation's rocket development. Past calendars did not contain such description.

At the North's ruling Workers' Party congress last month, leader Kim Jong Un said the successful test-firing declared to the world that the nation's buildup of nuclear capabilities had been completed. He stressed that he would further develop nuclear and missile programs.

Keio University Associate Professor Isozaki Atsuhito, an expert on North Korean affairs, said North Korea refrained from taking an aggressive stance during dialogue with former US President Donald Trump.

He said Pyongyang probably designated the commemoration day in line with party policy.

Isozaki added that North Korea has reiterated the importance of the day by marking it on the calendar, and that this may express the country's will to further beef up its military power.

Chinese police say they have arrested more than 80 people on suspicion of producing and selling fake coronavirus vaccines.

The state-run Xinhua news agency reported that police raided production bases in Beijing and the provinces of Jiangsu and Shandong, and seized about 3,000 doses of counterfeit vaccines.

The suspects are said to have been making the vaccines using saline solution since September last year and selling them at high prices.

The Global Times, an English-language newspaper affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party, quoted sources as saying that the suspects may have been planning to take the vaccines out of the country.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a news conference on Tuesday that the government takes the safety of vaccines seriously and will crack down on the production and sale of fake vaccines.

He stressed that China will work with law enforcement authorities around the world to prevent fake vaccines from being distributed.

China is providing domestically developed vaccines mainly to developing countries. Beijing is spotlighting its crackdown on fake products so the recipients won't lose trust in its vaccines.

Japanese electronics giant Sony says its group is expecting a record annual net profit for the current fiscal year.

Strong sales in its gaming, music and movie businesses have bolstered the firm's bottom line amid the pandemic.

The company has revised upward its net profit forecast for the year through March to nearly 1.1 trillion yen, or more than 10 billion dollars. That would surpass its record posted in fiscal 2018.

Sony has also announced a record net profit for the April-to-December period.

It was more than 1 trillion yen, or about 10 billion dollars. That's an 87 percent jump from a year earlier.

There was a surge in demand for digital entertainment as people stayed home.

Sony's new PlayStation 5 game console was one of the hot sellers.

The company's anime movie "Demon Slayer" was also a smash hit.

It was released in theaters across Japan last October and has become the county's highest grossing film ever.
