The leader of Myanmar's military has made his first national address since the coup against the government of the country's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

In his televised address to the public on Monday, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing defended the military's action on the grounds of irregularities in last year's general election.

The general said the electoral commission, the president, and parliament refused to act despite requests from his side.

He said he had no choice but to declare a state of emergency for the sake of a constitution-based, genuine democracy.

The general, however, made no mention of Aung San Suu Kyi or of widespread protests against the military.

On Monday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of the country's largest city of Yangon, calling for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other detained leaders.

It appears that the protesters will continue their demonstrations for seven straight days in a bid to ramp up pressure on the military.

The military imposed a curfew for areas of Yangon and Mandalay, another major city, between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. local time. Military officials pledged that they will act justly and according to the law.

Rescuers in northern India are continuing to search for about 170 people still missing after part of a Himalayan glacier broke off and triggered a huge flood.

So far 26 people have been confirmed dead when an avalanche of water and mud rushed down a mountain valley in the northern state of Uttarakhand on Sunday.

Workers at two hydropower plants downstream were carried away by the floodwaters.

Rescue workers, including military personnel, are focusing their efforts on a debris-filled tunnel at one of the affected plants. More than 30 people are believed to be trapped inside.

The workers said they have already gone about 150 meters into the 2.5-kilometer tunnel to remove debris and they will continue to work through the night.

Multiple villages remain isolated after bridges leading to them were washed away. Helicopters are airlifting supplies such as food to the affected areas.

Australia's government says an Australian TV anchor at China's state-run broadcaster has been formally arrested by Chinese authorities after six months of detention.

Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne told reporters on Monday that the government was notified by Chinese authorities that Cheng Lei was arrested on February 5.

Payne said Cheng faces charges of illegally supplying state secrets overseas.

Cheng, who was working as an anchor for an English language news service, has been detained since last August. The reason for her detention was unclear.

Payne said Australian Embassy officials in China had visited Cheng six times since her detention.

She added the government will continue to seek assurances that Cheng is being treated appropriately, humanely and in accordance with international norms.

Cheng's arrest could worsen ties between the two countries which have soured after Australia called for an independent investigation into the origin of the coronavirus last year. China has since taken a series of measures to restrict imports from Australia, including farm products.

Japan's Renesas Electronics Corporation has acquired British-based chip designer Dialog Semiconductor amid surging global demand for semiconductors.

The two firms announced they had agreed to the deal on Monday.

Renesas says the acquisition will accelerate innovation for customers and sustainable value for shareholders.

Renesas expects to pay about 620 billion yen, or roughly 5.9 billion dollars, for Dialog.

The UK firm designs semiconductors used in automobiles, smartphones and more. Its clients include Apple.

Some major automakers have been forced to suspend production due to the chip shortage.

There is also increasing demand for semiconductors used in smartphones, game consoles and data centers.

The Japan Coast Guard has begun checking the extent of damage to the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force submarine Souryu, following its collision with a commercial vessel.

The minor collision occurred on Monday at around 11:00 a.m., roughly 50 kilometers southeast of Cape Ashizuri in Kochi Prefecture, southwestern Japan.

No injuries have been reported among the crew of the 50,000-ton cargo ship. Three members of the submarine crew suffered minor injuries but did not require treatment in hospital.

The Souryu is now moored near a breakwater about 400 meters from the port at Kochi.

The Japan Coast Guard dispatched a patrol vessel on Tuesday morning to inspect the 2,950-ton submarine. The vessel sailed around it to check for any external damage. Coast guard officials then boarded the submarine and began their investigation.

The coast guard plans to interview the submarine crew and will also check for any damage to the commercial vessel.

A Japanese temple in Kyoto City is planning with a venture company to launch a "space temple," a small satellite carrying a Buddha statuette.

Daigoji Temple is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple and its partner Terra Space, a venture firm started by Kyoto University, held a Buddhist service on Monday to pray for the success of the project.

They are planning to launch a satellite in two years' time. The satellite that will carry the statuette is under 30 centimeters in width and length. They say the space temple will orbit the Earth at an altitude of about 500 kilometers, in the hope of inviting world peace.

But they say they haven't decided on which rocket to use for the launch or how to finance the project.

Organizers said at the service that well-wishers' messages will be converted to digital data and sent to the satellite. They also said the satellite's location information will be sent to smartphones.

A senior Daigoji official said the world has neither borders nor races when it's seen from space. He expressed hope that the space temple will be a place where diverse people will share their prayers.
