About 5,000 people held a rally outside the Myanmar embassy in Tokyo to call for the release of the country's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was detained in a coup on Monday.

Participants in Sunday's rally held photos of the leader and signs with messages such as "Save Myanmar", while chanting "Release Aung San Suu Kyi" and "We do not accept the military government".

A student from Myanmar who is studying in Japan said people in her country are constrained by the suspension of Internet service, and that she wants the international community, including Japan, to help.

A man from Myanmar said it will end up being a big loss for the country's future if they do not act now, and asked for Japan's help.

One of the organizers said he wants the people in Myanmar to know those living abroad are fighting with them.

The administration of US President Joe Biden has notified Congress that it will remove Yemen's Houthis from a list of international terrorist groups.

Former President Donald Trump's administration had added the Iran-backed group to the list in January shortly before Biden took office.

But a state department spokesperson said on Saturday it is reversing that action to limit the humanitarian consequences.

The official said the United Nations and humanitarian organizations had warned that the designation would accelerate the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

On Thursday, Biden ended US support for offensives by Saudi Arabia's coalition against the Houthis.

North Korea's state-run media say the Central Committee of the ruling party will hold a plenary session early this month.

The Sunday edition of party newspaper Rodong Sinmun reports that the politburo standing committee made the decision.

The paper says the purpose of the meeting is to finalize plans for "strategic tasks" in 2021.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency says defense and the economy could be top of the agenda, as was the case with the party convention last month.

At the convention, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called the United States his country's biggest enemy. He also vowed to advance Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.

Major South Korean newspapers are reporting that one of the focal points is whether the North will present any policy vis-a-vis the administration of US President Joe Biden.

The Japanese government will review if there are any areas where the state of emergency can be lifted before it expires on March 7.

As the revised coronavirus special measures law will take effect on Saturday, the government is preparing to consult with experts on how to reflect the revision in guidelines on reducing infection risks.

The meeting is expected to take place around Friday.

The revised law allows a phased easing of measures, even if a state of emergency is not in place.

With the number of new cases is on the decline in some areas, the government hopes to see if there are any prefectures where the state of emergency can be lifted.

It was extended to March 7 in 10 prefectures, including Tokyo.

Osaka Governor Yoshimura Hirofumi indicated that if a request is made to the central government to end the state of emergency, he would also request a phased easing of measures.

Many governors at the National Governors' Association meeting on Saturday wanted the central government to set criteria for applying the phased measures.

The government will continue to analyze the status of medical care systems in 10 prefectures, even after the state of emergency ends, in case there is a surge in the spread of the virus. It is considering a phased easing of measures.

The Japanese government has asked ten prefectures under its coronavirus state of emergency to launch an intensive coronavirus testing campaign at elderly care facilities. The action is in response to the growing number of cluster infections at such facilities.

The health ministry has told the prefectures to first sound out which nursing care facilities want testing and submit a testing plan by next Friday.

Testing plans should include the period of testing and whether residents of nursing care facilities will be included, in addition to the staff.

The ministry says the government plans to shoulder all the costs of testing.

It says it expects testing will be completed by the end of next month and that the prefectures will report the results to the ministry.

The ministry has confirmed 261 cluster infections and infections of two or more people in one place during the seven days through February 1.

More than a third of those infections, or 95, occurred at nursing care facilities.

It says in many cases staff infected residents.

Tochigi Prefecture is not included, as the emergency declaration for the prefecture will have been lifted by the end of Sunday.

Japanese researchers believe that a jawbone fossil discovered in Fukui Prefecture in 2019 might be from the earliest mammal to ever live within its shores.

Researchers at Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum have analyzed a lower jaw fossil that was unearthed in June, 2019. It was found in the early Cretaceous stratum, which dates back about 127 million years.

The jaw has three teeth, each measuring 13.1 millimeters long and 5.8 millimeters high.

Researchers suspect that the jawbone belonged to a primitive mammal that was about 16 to 17 centimeters long.

Researchers say Japan's earliest currently known mammal fossil was found in the stratum dating back about 130 to 121 million years.

The latest discovery was excavated from the stratum of almost the same age.

They say that suggests this mammal lived in the same age, or even earlier.

Chief researcher Miyata Kazunori says the specimen is valuable as it suggests a diversity of mammals in the time of dinosaurs.

A young Japanese dancer has won an award at a prestigious ballet competition in Switzerland.

Fuchiyama Shunhei placed fifth at the annual Prix de Lausanne, which is widely viewed as a gateway to success for dancers between the ages of 15 and 18.

Videos of 20 dancers, including three from Japan, were shown at Saturday's finals. Each dancer gave performances to classical and contemporary music.

The unusual video show was adopted as the dancers were not able to go to Lausanne this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Fuchiyama, an 18-year-old from Saitama, near Tokyo, gave a brilliant and dynamic performance to Grand Pas Classique by Daniel Auber.

Fuchiyama has trained in his home city since March of last year after he returned from the United States. His ballet school in Florida closed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

He expressed his gratitude to the staff of the contest for hosting the event amid the pandemic. He also thanked his teachers and family members.

He said he wants to become a principal dancer of a renowned ballet company.
