Three TV reporters and two activists from Myanmar have been arrested in Thailand on suspicion of illegal entry. The reporters work for Democratic Voice of Burma, known as DVB, a broadcaster critical of the Southeast Asian country's military leaders.

Thai police say they detained the five in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand on Sunday. They seized broadcasting equipment from the accommodation where they were staying. Thai authorities believe the five secretly crossed the border so they could continue broadcasting.

DVB Executive Director and Chief Editor Aye Chan Naing released a statement saying their lives would be in great danger if they were forced to return to Myanmar, and strongly urging the Thai government not to deport them.

The statement goes on to appeal to the international community to call on the Thai authorities to refrain from deporting the five.

Thailand's foreign ministry says government officials are working to find a humanitarian solution.

Myanmar's military has stepped up pressure on the media since toppling the country's democratically elected government in a February coup. DVB is among five media outlets that had their licenses revoked in March. A number of journalists have been detained, including Japanese reporter Kitazumi Yuki.

Japan's Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu says the country will host an online summit-level meeting next month to discuss how to promote coronavirus vaccinations worldwide.

Motegi told reporters on Tuesday that Japan will co-host the meeting on June 2 with the Gavi vaccine alliance, an international group that promotes vaccinations in developing nations. He said Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide will take part in the meeting.

Motegi stressed that accelerating efforts to ensure fair access to vaccines is an urgent issue as the coronavirus has spread worldwide.

The foreign minister expressed hopes that the summit-level meeting will help deepen international cooperation to ensure necessary funds to deliver more doses of safe and effective vaccine to developing nations.

Motegi suggested that Japan may consider providing additional funds for the COVAX Facility -- a global initiative to ensure the fair distribution of vaccines. Japan has already provided 200 million dollars for the program.

He added that Japan, as a host nation of the upcoming meeting, cannot just wait and see how the situation develops.
