Myanmar's state-run media says Japanese journalist Kitazumi Yuki will be released from prison. Sources say he is expected to be sent back to Japan as early as Friday.
The report came late on Thursday, quoting an announcement by the State Administration Council, the top decision-making body set up by Myanmar's military.
The TV station reported Kitazumi had broken Myanmar's laws, but he will be freed at the request of the mediator representing the Japanese government. It said the move was being taken out of consideration for future ties between Myanmar and Japan.
Kitazumi was detained by Myanmar's security forces on April 18, accused of fueling anxiety among citizens and spreading false information.
Japan's foreign ministry says it has confirmed the imminent release of the freelance reporter. Officials say Kitazumi has no health problems.

The Japanese government plans to add three more prefectures to its state of emergency as coronavirus cases continue to surge nationwide.
Six prefectures, including Tokyo and Osaka, are under a state of emergency until the end of this month.
The government plans to add three more prefectures -- Hokkaido, Okayama and Hiroshima -- to the state of emergency, starting Sunday. Those prefectures are experiencing surges and their medical systems are strained.
Intensive measures, which don't fall under a state of emergency, are currently in place in eight prefectures, including those that neighbor the capital.
Hokkaido is one of those prefectures, but it will be upgraded to the state of emergency on Sunday.
And the government will add three other prefectures, including Gunma, Ishikawa and Kumamoto, to the intensive measures list from Sunday.
On Friday morning, officials consulted with the government's expert panel about the plan.
Economic Revitalization Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi, who is in charge of the coronavirus response, said, "The number of new cases is rising not only in the capital but across the country. That includes the Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu regions."
Nishimura expressed concern over transmissible variants, noting that young generations are particularly at risk of developing serious symptoms.
Researchers at Japan's National Institute of Infectious Diseases say that variants carrying the N501Y mutation are likely to account for about 90 percent of new cases.
On Thursday, over 6,800 new infections were confirmed nationwide.

Countries in Southeast Asia are also struggling to contain the pandemic. Thailand set a record for daily new cases after including clusters in prisons.
Thai health authorities reported over 4,800 new cases on Thursday. More than half of these were confirmed at two prisons in Bangkok.
A detained leader of anti-government protests tested positive after being released on bail last week. She was being held for allegedly insulting the royal family.
A variant first detected in the UK has been mushrooming in Thailand for a month. Another variant found in India was detected for the first time earlier this week.
The government has mandated that people nationwide must wear masks when going out. It also ordered the temporary closure of public venues and businesses in the capital.
Meanwhile, Vietnam has extended its arrival quarantine by a week to 21 days. Those who may have come into contact with infected persons are subject to the same measure.
Vietnam had managed to keep infections not related to arriving travelers at zero for a month, but it has been seeing more of them since late April. A record 125 such cases were reported earlier this week.
