Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen has expressed her determination to strengthen defense capabilities in a speech during celebrations for Double Ten Day, which Taiwan considers its founding day.
The ceremony took place on Sunday in front of the Presidential Office Building in Taipei.
Tsai said that "the routinization of Chinese military activity" in Taiwan's air defense identification zone "has seriously affected both our national security and aviation safety."
On relations with Beijing, she said Taiwan calls for maintaining the status quo, and will do its utmost to prevent the status quo from being unilaterally altered.
The president also said, "We hope for an easing of cross-strait relations and will not act rashly, but there should be absolutely no illusions that the Taiwanese people will bow to pressure."
A parade displayed weapons including the Hsiung Feng III, an anti-ship missile developed by Taiwan.
The Taiwanese authorities are accelerating the development and mass production of long-range missiles to increase deterrence against China.

The scientist described as the father of Pakistan's nuclear bomb was given a state funeral on Sunday at the country's largest mosque. Abdul Qadeer Khan died earlier in the day at the age of 85.
The ceremony for the man regarded as a national hero in Pakistan took place at Faisal Mosque in Islamabad. The national flag was flown at half-mast at the parliament building and elsewhere in the capital.
Many people took part, including an elementary school student who said Khan made nuclear weapons that have kept Pakistan safe from its enemies.
Khan helped the country conduct a successful nuclear test in 1998.
He came under severe international criticism in 2004, when it was discovered that he had played a role in sharing nuclear technology with foreign countries, including North Korea and Iran.

South Korea's ruling Democratic Party has selected the governor of Gyeonggi province, Lee Jae-myung, as its candidate for the presidential election next March.
The Democratic Party, which supports President Moon Jae-in, announced the final results of its presidential primaries in the capital, Seoul, on Sunday.
The primaries were conducted at 11 locations across South Korea.
The party says Lee gained an overall majority.
Lee has gained popularity among voters who say his policies are easy to understand.
Lee argues that the country's wealth gap can be resolved by introducing a universal basic income to guarantee a minimum level of economic prosperity.
In a survey released by Gallup Korea on Friday, 25 percent of the respondents said they regard Lee as the most suitable person to be South Korea's next president.
The People Power Party has narrowed down its candidates to four. The largest opposition party is scheduled to announce its selection in November.
The opposition camp has intensified its criticism of Lee over allegations involving an urban development project in Seongnam when he was the city's mayor.

Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has outlined his plans to pursue a strategy to live with the coronavirus despite a surge in so-called vaccine breakthrough infections in the country.
In a televised address on Saturday, Lee gave an update on the COVID-19 situation in Singapore and the "path to a new normal."
Singapore confirmed a record 3,590 new cases of the coronavirus a day earlier.
He said more than 98 percent of local cases have mild or no symptoms. He added, "With vaccination, COVID-19 is no longer a dangerous disease for most of us."
Lee said the government will no longer implement restrictions on economic and social activities, including lockdowns, and will instead employ a strategy of "Living with COVID-19."
Eighty-three percent of Singapore's population has been fully vaccinated.
But the country has recently seen many cases of breakthrough infections.
The government has reinforced coronavirus restrictions again since late September. It had eased them in August.

A US Navy ship that can serve as an expeditionary sea base has been confirmed anchored off the coast of Nagasaki Prefecture in southwestern Japan.
The USS Miguel Keith was seen Sunday anchored at the port of Sasebo, the home of a US naval base.
The ship is one of three expeditionary sea bases operated by the US Navy.
The USS Miguel Keith is about 240 meters long and functions as a base for helicopter takeoffs and landings. It can also provide logistic support for military operations.
The private online site MarineTraffic and other sources indicate that the USS Miguel Keith left Hawaii on September 20.
It was anchored off White Beach Naval Facility in Uruma City, Okinawa Prefecture, on Wednesday, and is believed to have arrived off Sasebo on Friday.
The Miguel Keith was commissioned in May this year.
The US Navy said on Thursday that the ship's maiden deployment to the 7th Fleet based in Yokosuka would enhance operations capabilities to defend a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
It is believed the deployment was made in response to China's expanding maritime activities.

A Japanese Air Self-Defense Force plane flying over southwestern Japan lost its cockpit canopy weighing dozens of kilograms.
The Defense Ministry says it has so far received no reports of injury or structural damage.
The ministry says an F-2 fighter jet's cockpit canopy separated from the aircraft on Sunday afternoon as it flew over mountainous areas of Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture.
The aluminum and acrylic glass canopy measures 150 centimeters long, 90 centimeters wide and 80 centimeters high, and weighs roughly 90 kilograms.
The ministry says SDF personnel have been dispatched to search for the canopy.
The fighter was scrambling in response to a possible violation of Japan's airspace.
But the mishap forced the plane to return to its base in the prefecture. The ministry said another fighter took its place to respond.
The ministry apologized for causing anguish to residents living near the base, and in areas where the canopy is believed to have fallen. It pledged to inspect all ASDF planes for possible abnormalities.
