Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa will leave for Poland on Friday night to make arrangements for accepting evacuees from Ukraine.

The Japanese government is considering using a government plane to transport those who wish to stay in Japan.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio initially chose Justice Minister Furukawa Yoshihisa as his special envoy to Poland, which has the largest number of Ukrainians who have fled their country amid the Russian invasion.

But Hayashi will be sent instead as Furukawa was found to be a possible close contact of a person infected with the coronavirus.

Hayashi will stay in Poland until early next week. He is scheduled to visit a facility hosting Ukrainian evacuees and hear from NGO workers who are helping them.

Hayashi is also expected to hold talks with senior Polish government officials to get an accurate picture of what the evacuees need.

The Japanese government is also working to secure accommodations for those who choose to stay in Japan and will help to cover their living expenses.

The Chinese government says it will impose visa restrictions for some US government officials in retaliation for similar measures from Washington.

The US announced on March 21 that it is imposing visa restrictions on some Chinese officials believed to be responsible for policies or actions designed to repress minorities and others in China and beyond.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told reporters on Thursday that the US has fabricated lies on the pretext of the so-called human rights issue, and used it as an excuse to interfere in China's internal affairs. He said China firmly opposes this.

Wang said that the US officials who he said concocted lies on China's human rights issues and harmed Chinese interests will be subject to the visa restrictions.

He did not provide details, such as how many US officials will be targeted and when the restrictions will be imposed.

In Thailand, the replacement of the head of an army-run TV channel is causing ripples over the coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The replacement came amid reports of a controversial meeting last week between the channel's chief and the Russian ambassador to Thailand to discuss news cooperation.

Local media reported on Tuesday that the army commander-in-chief had ordered the replacement of Channel 5's president Rangsee Kitiyanasap.

The departure is widely believed to be linked to the agreement made between Rangsee and the Russian ambassador to exchange information.

Rangsee said the deal would provide viewers with a more balanced picture of events in contrast to reports by Western media.

The move by Rangsee to air possible Russian propaganda sparked criticism, including from the Thai government as it ran counter to the country's neutral stance.

On Monday, a Channel 5 news program was abruptly cut after the newscaster said the word "Russia."

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has denied any involvement in Rangsee's departure.

But he also said news should be based on facts and foreign news should be offered in a straightforward manner.

Thai media outlets are reporting on the situation in Ukraine, and criticism against Russia has been rising among Thais despite the government's neutral stance.
