Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned of land mines left behind by Russian troops who are retreating from the outskirts of Kyiv.
Zelenskyy said in a statement on Saturday that Russian troops were slowly leaving their positions in northern Ukraine. But the president added they are laying mines across the territory and urged people not to return to those areas.
The Ukrainian government said that it had retaken more than 30 towns and villages.
Britain's defense ministry said Ukrainian troops had retaken multiple villages east of Kyiv and were moving from Irpin toward the towns of Bucha and Hostomel to the north.
Russia's defense ministry announced that the Russian forces had intensified their offensive in the regions of Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk, and struck armored vehicles and fuel tanks of Ukrainian troops with missiles.
Russia's state-run Tass news agency quoted presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov as saying that Russia had destroyed most of Ukraine's military infrastructure.
He said he hopes the goal of Russia's military operation in Ukraine will be attained as soon as possible, and hostile activities will cease. He stressed that Russia will continue fighting to liberate eastern Ukraine.
The besieged eastern city of Mariupol has been facing a serious humanitarian crisis.
Reuters reported that Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said 4,217 residents of Mariupol had escaped from the war zone.
But more than 100,000 people are believed to be trapped in the city.

Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa has visited a facility in Poland that houses people who fled Ukraine after the Russian invasion.
Hayashi is in Poland as Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's special envoy to prepare for accepting Ukrainian evacuees.
Hayashi met his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in Warsaw on Saturday, and conveyed Japan's resolve to support the country.
During the visit to the refugee facility, Hayashi heard from the Ukrainians what kind of support they need.
Speaking to reporters, Hayashi said the visit was a useful opportunity for the Japanese government to consider how to help Ukrainian evacuees when they arrive in Japan.
The Japanese government is planning to bring those who wish to come to Japan on Hayashi's return flight. So far, about 20 people reportedly hope to come to Japan.
Hayashi is scheduled to visit an area bordering Ukraine on Sunday and exchange views with officials of an international organization that is working to support evacuees.

Chinese authorities reported 13,146 community transmissions of COVID-19 across the country, including infected people without symptoms, on Saturday. A record 8,226 new cases were confirmed in Shanghai.
The city authorities divided Shanghai in two and began to implement a lockdown in phases on March 28.
The lockdown in the eastern half of Shanghai, which was due to be lifted on Friday, was extended in most residential areas, including the Pudong New Area.
In the western part of the city, where many Japanese live, residents have been placed under a lockdown from Friday to Tuesday in most areas.
The Shanghai authorities said they would conduct antigen tests for residents in all parts of the city on Sunday and carry out PCR tests on Monday.
The Chinese government sent Vice Premier Sun Chunlan to Shanghai on Saturday. She stressed the government's stance to quickly contain the spread of the virus under its zero-COVID policy.
The continuing spread of the virus may prolong the lockdown in wide areas of Shanghai.

The sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has hit back at comments made by South Korea's defense minister, saying they refer to a "preemptive attack" on her country.
South Korea's Suh Wook said on Friday that if his country believes an attack is imminent, its troops have the capabilities to accurately and swiftly strike any North Korean launch site and its command and support facilities.
The North's Kim Yo Jong said in a statement issued on Saturday that Suh's comments have worsened inter-Korean relations and raised military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
"Now we cannot but take his confrontation hysteria seriously and reconsider a lot of things," she said, adding she would give a serious warning "upon authorization."
North Korea's highest-ranking military officer, Pak Jong Chon, released a separate statement.
Pak said if South Korea takes dangerous military action against North Korea, such as a preemptive strike, its military would direct all of its force into destroying major targets in Seoul and the South's military.
The war of words comes as South Korea's president-elect Yoon Suk-yeol calls for the capability to carry out preemptive attacks to counter North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. Yoon is scheduled to take office next month.

There is no apparent front-runner in a leadership contest in Hong Kong as a nomination period begins on Sunday.
The election to choose a chief executive is held every five years. Voting was originally scheduled to take place on March 27 but was postponed to May 8 due to a surge in the number of coronavirus infections.
Around 1,500 election committee members, who are mostly pro-Beijing, vote on candidates who have a sufficient number of pledges from among them.
So far, no one who has enough pledges has given an indication of intending to run. Incumbent Chief Executive Carrie Lam has not said if she would seek a second term.
Observers say the election may be postponed for a second time but Lam's term will expire at the end of June.
Hong Kong media speculate that a person with the backing of the Beijing government would emerge as the only candidate before the nomination period ends on April 16 and that the committee would vote to approve the candidate.
